Common Questions and Answers about Lipitor liver damage

Avatar n tn Lori, all the cholesterol meds work in slightly different fashions, so you may want to consider talking to your doc about trying a different brand like Crestor, or? You could also discuss the use of red yeast rice, if your doc is a functional medicine doc, or perhaps think about trying the niacin-based meds. Cholesterol meds can cause muscle weakness and pain. No matter what you're on in the future, make sure the doc checks your enzyme levels regularly.
Avatar n tn Thanks for the info
Avatar m tn Impossible lipitor can cause liver enzymes to increase. HCV is spread via blood to blood contact only ie. via transfusion, IV drug abuse and in the case of Viet Nam vets jet guns used for innoculation other factors may be involved I would suggest further liver tests to rule out other liver disorders. HCV can be diagnosed very easy via a blood test.
2121656 tn?1395674749 I forgot to ask two more questions in my above post. Is swimming in a chlorine pool ok with high liver enzymes as stated above, or will the chlorine elevate them more? my husband & I just purchased a pool and PCP said it's ok to swim in Chlorine. However, I'm skeptical in doing so.
Avatar f tn if it is fatty liver the treatment is weight loss if you are overweight, as well as adequate for diabetes and high cholesterol. You may have to stay on a lower dose of the statin. Severe liver damage is extremely rare from statin use.
Avatar f tn Which one would be the best considering I still have a cirrhotic liver? Lipitor is out because I had an adverse reaction to it years ago (caused horrible coughing). I need to tell my general doctor what to prescribe tomorrow so please send me your opinions. Thank you!
10996785 tn?1432812977 The doctor then asked about my lipitor. She told me that lipitor has a bad side effect that can permanently damage muscles in your body, that can lead to kidney failure. I'm not saying Lipitor is bad. It does have this side effect that can effect a small amount of people. However, I without a doubt, feel as if this is my problem. Lipitor and Trazodone have combined to almost stop me in my tracks. I realize that some people may not like the talking about lipitor in this way.
Avatar f tn Hello, Statins are known to have the adverse effect of liver enzyme elevation, which is generally asymptomatic. Severe liver damage as a result of statin is virtually unknown. The current clinical practice is to discontinue statin when the liver enzymes have increased to more than three times the upper limit of normal. Although zetia on its own does not generally cause liver enzyme abnormalities, it might potentiate the enzyme abnormalities, when coadministered with a statin.
1583640 tn?1296674030 I have discontinued the medication to reduce the cholesterol level. I have always had very good numbers based on good diet, exercise, etc. My doctor wanted to reduce my cholesterol to be below 100. I took the medication for several months and the latest blood test indicates the liver enzmes are in the abnormal range...never an issue always normal. I certainly would not trade off a very low cholesterol level with a risk of liver damage....doesn't make sense!
Avatar f tn Drs said it was caused by taking Lipitor. He had history of a fatty liver also. The evening before he passed away, my husband was visiting him and when he was leaving and walking down the hallway he heard my pap coughing. My husband went back into the room and gave him a tissue. When he stopped coughing he asked my husband to throw it away. My husband was alarmed when he seen the tissue filled with what looked to be coffee grounds. He went to the nurses station and told them.
Avatar f tn My doctor tested for SMA after routine liver tests (I was taking Lipitor) were slightly elevated (in the 40s). When the positive SMA results came back, I then found out about my Alpha-1 anti-trypsin deficiency heterozygous carrier status. My triglycerides have always been fine. My good cholesterol is high, but my bad cholesterol is now higher than normal again and my regular doctor wants me back on Lipitor. I am very hesitant due to the Alpha-1 carrier status and the autoantibodies.
Avatar f tn Hi ! Been wanting to catch up with you. The first rheumy said I have RA and the new one I went to says I don't. My nuclear whole body scan shows most EVERY joint in my body to be degenerative. (does that mean erosion)? I do have that positive RA Factor and have pain. But now I don't know if I may have Lupus. My Lupus labs are negative including the DNA. Can they eventually become positive?
1463256 tn?1286028981 What is wrong with checking to be sure everything is OK before proceeding with statins (except that patients might be spooked from taking them, which is the point of course)? If checks for liver damage are recommended (and liver damage is rare too), why not checks for statin damage to lungs and heart?
Avatar n tn Actually, your comments about liver failure is not correct. Recent studies have found that statins like Lipitor acutally improve liver function in patients with liver disease and the incidence rate of liver failure is not turning out to be as high as originally thought. In fact, the FDA is considering dropping the liver failure side effect from the patient leaflet and consumer information.
Avatar n tn I drink socially and take liptor and was wondering in that I only drink in the evenings if it's better to take the lipitor in the morning in order for the liver to metabolize the alcohol at night. Or is the liver simply distributed evenly over a 24 hour period making the time you take it with alcohol irrelevant. Does drinking 1.5 - 2.0 oz of scotch or bourbon within an hour or two of taking 20 mg of Lipitor create an elevated risk of Liver or Kidney dysfunction?
Avatar n tn A severely elevated CPK can cause liver damage. I would consult with your physician to determine if this is a new finding. You should compare the cpk value to previous levels and also have your renal (kidney) function assessed. The cpk may be a result of your exercise activities but better safe than sorry.
Avatar n tn The non-cirrhotic portion of the liver should begin to repair itself. One can survive with half a liver. Take care of you liver, never drink again, and take all the precautions you have while under tx. You made it buddy! Btw as others have said, ask the questions, get the answers.
907968 tn?1292622204 Apparently the Americans and the Greeks disagree then. Quote "A new study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology examined the results of 23 large clinical trials of statins for patterns of liver damage, measured by an increased concentration of the enzymes released when liver cells die." Quote "The researchers found that high-dose statins caused 2.4 times as many cases of liver damage as low-dose statins, or 271 cases per 100,000 patients.
Avatar n tn About a month ago my liver function readings were elevated, so my Doctor took me off Lipitor to see if it was the Lipitor or alcohol consumption causing them to be high. He told me to come back in one month to be tested again. Even without the Lipitor, they went up some to 74 AST and 142 ALT. Now he wants me to go to get a GI Specialist. I asked if this was for more testing, he just said no, but they would be better off determining what medication you should be on.
1094370 tn?1317134825 Diseases that Cause Elevated Liver Enzymes in the Blood The most common diseases causing abnormally elevated ALT and AST are acute viral hepatitis, such as hepatitis A or B, chronic viral hepatitis, such hepatitis B or C, cirrhosis of the liver (scarring of the liver due to long standing inflammation of the liver), liver damage from alcohol abuse or alcoholic fatty liver, hemochromatosis (a genetic condition causing long standing liver damage due to iron build up in the liver), and diminished

2121656 tn?1395674749 Dr. Schiano, Hi there! I'm thankful for this site to get a insight into understanding medical diagnoses. Before I get started, I would like to thank you for all you do and taking the time in reviewing my post. Well, I'll start with telling you a little about my health. I've type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, high trig. (hereditary on mother's side). I was just diagnosed with Hashimoto Thyroiditis. Due to the diabetes and high cholesterol I was taking metformin 500 mg.
Avatar m tn I am confussed by RJGCEDARS post because i did not think that you could take Lipitor if you have liver problems, also the better your liver gets the better it metabolises cholesterol.
