Common Questions and Answers about Lipitor and joint problems

lipitor

Avatar n tn headache, constipation/diarrhea, upset stomach and stomach pain, muscle and joint pain and rash. These varies from one patient to another. It could be that the rash you experienced looked like hives. (Although stress can also lead to hives). You can relate your experience at this link to the manufacturers to better address it : http://www.lipitor.com/about-lipitor/side-effects.aspx Take care and regards.
Avatar n tn I later restarted Lipitor at a lower dose because all research and studies strongly suggest statins, and especially Lipitor, have beneficial effects upon cardiac, vascular, and brain function, and at the lower dose I haven't had any ill effects... but again, I can't say (and my docs can't say) if my original symptoms were because of Lipitor or "adjusting" to a new metabolism or what... That's the total of my two cents...
Avatar n tn I had to come off of Lipitor after one week due to severe muscle and joint pain. My mother had moderate pain after starting Lipitor. We were both encouraged by our separate physicians to take coenzyme Q10 with the Lipitor. While my pain continued, my mother's pain has almost completely disappeared.
10996785 tn?1432812977 Like you, I pulled myself off of Lipitor (atorvastatin) because of muscle and joint weakness/pain and other recorded side effect. I had only taken it for about five weeks and the discomfort remains three weeks later. I had the same reaction to simvastatin, which I am told is the worst of the bunch. I'm waiting a few months and then I will try something with a less violent track record.
Avatar f tn His doctor started him on Lipitor 20 mg. After a few months he can hardly move-- his joints ache and he is getting new joint injuries daily-- (knuckels are swelling--arm muscle injury won't heal--).. His doctor stopped the meds, waited a week, then started at lower dose. Same results, He went from a vibrant energetic man to a slow limping man in a few months. What injuries is this medication doing to his joints? Might they be permanent? Does the Lipitor dissolve the calcifications?
Tbd I had problems with aches and pains with Lipitor and switched. It reduced the amount of aches and pains, however try to add COQ10 with your meds. I have found that it helps a lot.
10996785 tn?1432812977 LIPITOR (atorvastatin calcium) tablets are not for everyone, including anyone who has previously had an allergic reaction to LIPITOR. It is not for those with liver problems. And it is not for women who are nursing, pregnant, or may become pregnant. If you get pregnant, stop taking LIPITOR and call your doctor right away. If you take LIPITOR tablets, tell your doctor if you feel any new muscle pain or weakness.
Avatar f tn Now he is still experiencing extreme joint pain in his hip and has swelling of a finger joint and has injured his knee somehow without his knowledge. He has gone from a strong fit man to someone who hobbles around in less than 4 months. Is the Lipitor doing damage to his joints as well as causing pain? Is there any other medication with less side effects?
Avatar f tn Hi ! Been wanting to catch up with you. The first rheumy said I have RA and the new one I went to says I don't. My nuclear whole body scan shows most EVERY joint in my body to be degenerative. (does that mean erosion)? I do have that positive RA Factor and have pain. But now I don't know if I may have Lupus. My Lupus labs are negative including the DNA. Can they eventually become positive?
Avatar m tn If you are on statins, the muscle and joint pain could be related to the statin you are taking. Let your doctor know, so your doctor can switch your statin medication.
Avatar f tn My husband was recently taken off of Lipitor and has been experiencing daily headaches. He's not a headache person. Is this a common thing when coming off Lipitor? Also, I have read that you should stop it gradually. Is this true?
Avatar f tn I cut out 99% of the sugar and salt in my diet and am eating only fresh fruits and vegetables, frozen no-additives fruits and vegetables, lean beef, pork, chicken, cold water fish, walnuts, almonds, dried fruits, raw honey, fresh herbs, and occasionally, I have whole grain brown rice. I do not eat any gluten, dairy, legumes, or nightshade fruits and vegetables (tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, peppers). I allow myself one or two treats a week like a small amount of dark chocolate or dill pickles.
Avatar n tn We both - husband and wife, have been experiencing these symptoms. We have been on simvastatin for (wife for 1+ years, me for 2+ years) and stopped about 5-6 months ago - wife still having pains in the butt some dizziness and leg pain, but getting better - I am having butt pain and leg pains, swollen left knee, (but joint pain seems OK on stairs), recovery seems slower than my wife's.
Avatar m tn Does anyone know why the drug information for Lipitor says that it can cause problems for some people with hypothyroidism? I know that Lipotor can artiificially lower TSH and cause a false positive for hyperthyroidism.
Avatar n tn (size of nodule slightly larger than 1 mm 5 m ago). According to the surgeon I also have goiter. I have also had problems with my color bone and my elbow - swelling and pain - at different times (after I started Lipitor). My questions: If hypothyrodism can cause high cholesterol is it not better to take thyorid hormone replacement than Lipitor?
Avatar f tn The Lipitor package insert recommends that a test of your liver function should be done prior to and at 12 weeks following both the start of therapy with Lipitor and any increase of dose, and periodically (for example, every six months) thereafter. If there are any changes in your liver function, drinking alcohol may make it worse.
Avatar n tn I was on Lipitor, then on Pravachol and lastly on Crestor. None of them had problems loweting the Choesterol levels, but muscle and joint pain even with Vit D and Co Q10 as prescribed my physician. However, I came off crestor yesterday as I started feeling Dizzy. I am normally a "healthy", active energetic person. Now my doc thinks we should try Zetia which is in a different family of drugs. Has anyone experienced difficulties with this? Any thoughts?
Avatar f tn Starting in October 2015, I began having digestion problems, nausea whenever I ate ANYTHING, gas, bloating and diarrhea. My doctor thought I had food poisoning (my symptoms were that severe) and put me on several courses of antibiotics. Finally he referred me to a GI who ran stool tests, blood tests, urine tests, endoscopy, colonscopy. All NEGATIVE. He threw up his hands and said "I don't know what is causing this. You just have a bad stomach.
Avatar m tn Each new statin he tried gave me anxiety. Finally we tried Lipitor and I had no problems. I have been on 10 mg of Lipitor now for nearly 7 years with no problems. My insurance will no longer cover Lipitor. My doctor prescribed Pravacol and after 3 doses, I had an anxiety attack. It subsided when I stopped the medicine. A week later he gave me some samples of Crestor.
Avatar f tn Over the years the symptoms increased, and I now have severe lower back and neck pain, joint pain (especially knees) and my RLS has become more pronounced. I now have the symptoms beginning much earlier in the day, so have had to increase the use of Sinemet. I now believe the Lipitor may be the cause of my "restless leg syndrome" and also the cause of these other aches and pains that are becoming much worse.
Avatar f tn I have pain in my joints and muscles, reflux, heartburn, bowel problems, high cholesterol and elevated c reactive protein. I have had these problems for years. I can not remember not having heartburn and reflux. I love my doctor but couldn't get him to find any reason for pain. About four years ago, got a second opinion from an internist. He ran all types of blood tests and found high cholesterol (LDL: 150) nad elevated c reactive protein (10). He prescribed Wellbutrin?????????
Avatar n tn Hi MY BACKRGROUND (AGE 56, HEIGHT 168 CM, 88 KILOS. 2002 Angioplasty for 70 percent blockage using catheritization (arm, Dr. Saito in Japan). No stent. 2006 no restenosis. 2008 Did CT scan radioactive dye and also no restenosis. Age: 56--> Regimen: Lipitor 5 mg, baby aspirin, fish oil (about 3-4 grams).
Avatar m tn I have had some intense muscle and joint pain in the past, which is why my doctor has been changing my statin type and dosage. We're trying to find the right combo. I have a history of CAD and PAD, have had a femoral stent, and am a smoker.(59 yo male, btw). Does anyone know if I can substitute 20 mg Lipitor for my 20 mg Simvastatin, which I just ran out of? I have some Lipitor in the cabinet and my doc is going to put me on Vytorin in 11 days.
Avatar m tn I have been on statins for quite a few years, with problems. First was Lipitor, it did great for my cholesterol, but I started getting skin whelps on my arms. I quit taking it, and within 2 weeks they were gone, despite an allergist not finding it. I tried Vytorin, had muscle and joint pain. But in the past few years, taking simvistatin and a few others, it has been a mood/anger issue. My wife complains, telling me I'm pain to live with, I argue all the time, go off at the slightest thing.
Avatar f tn I stopped the lipitor 3 days ago and the pain in my legs has stopped and feet are some better. I go to the dr. soon so I will tell her. I have stopped the lipitor before for a few days and gotten back to normal.
Avatar n tn I had no problems at all with that med. Then when the generic for Lipitor came out, she put me on that. I guess to save me money. I was having constant daily headaches. Neurologist treated it as Migraines. MRI was normal. Still having some migraines weekly now. But my neurologist says I'm fine and that I am clear to return to work. I told him what all else I was feeling in my head and he just blew it off.
Avatar f tn There is much controversy about cholesterol, but it is muted because of pharmaceutical financial interests in statins. Half of those who die of strokes or heart attacks have no history of high cholesterol. DeBakey discounted cholesterol. My own doctor pays no attention to it. What is the true role of cholesterol and how should one proceed? I don't know, but I won't take Lipitor.
Avatar m tn At about 4 months after surgery, I changed statin and antacid medicines to Lipitor (80) and Nexium. Two weeks later, I started experiencing mild aching in the upper chest/esophogus area--a mild form of my heart attack/angina symptoms. I switched back to Aciphex at that time, but remained on Lipitor. At the six month after surgery point, I underwent a stress radionuclide test and another heart catheterization (required by my job). Both tests showed no problems.
