There are no issues with the above list of medications and vitamins. Like you said, we rask patients to avoid vitamin K when taking coumadin (a blood thinner) but other than that a multivitamin or vitamin b supplements will not be a problem with the above medications. You may buys whatever vitamins she needs.
Prosthetic Valve patient - no atrial fib, normal left atrial size, high level of fitness and activity, and wonder if the added benefit documented in some studies through the addition of aspirin applies to me, or if I am in a different clinical population, where the added risk of bleeding really wouldn't be offset by lower risk of stroke.

I have been taking Lipitor for the last 10 years and lately I have developed muscle pains. I was told the pain might be because of the Lipitor. I stopped taking them for a couple of months, the pain was much less however my cloestrol level was back to 290.

There is much controversy about cholesterol, but it is muted because of pharmaceutical financial interests in statins. Half of those who die of strokes or heart attacks have no history of high cholesterol. DeBakey discounted cholesterol. My own doctor pays no attention to it. What is the true role of cholesterol and how should one proceed? I don't know, but I won't take Lipitor.
Duke University Medical Center recommended the target range of 3.0 to 3.5 for the St Jude Medical leaflet valve. I have been on it since 1993. The Lipitor package insert recommends that a test of your liver function should be done prior to and at 12 weeks following both the start of therapy with Lipitor and any increase of dose, and periodically (for example, every six months) thereafter. If there are any changes in your liver function, drinking alcohol may make it worse.
People taking lipitor are recommended to avoid alcohol in their diet because it raises the triglyceride levels, another lipid which is a risk factor for heart disease. Going to soft drinks would be far more beneficial for your body obviously but if this is impossible I would switch your lipitor to the mornings. Lipitor, unlike some statin drugs, can be taken any time of the day.
If hypothyrodism can cause high cholesterol is it not better to take thyorid hormone replacement than Lipitor?
In the past no one has been able to indentify why these levels are up. I did take lipitor 5 years ago for about three months and the doctor stopped it after the elevation of the cpk. It is still high, with a most recent reading of 709. A few weeks ago I thought I had the flu. Every muscle in me was hurting. I stayed in bed for three days. I felt a little better and returned to my desk job at work. Now the muscle pain has come back, especially in my arms, neck and both sides of my groin.
My father in law is an alcoholic who has Atrial Fibrillation and is on coumadin. His cardiologist will not perform a cardioversion for him until his INR is within an acceptable level but it never is! The coumadin nurses frequently tell him his levels are too high and tell him to not take any coumadin for days at a time then the cardiologist tells him his INR is top low and they post pone the cardioversion.
We usually admit the patients 3 days prior to the surgery when we withhold coumadin and start heparin once the INR is less than 2.0. After surgery we usually start the heparin 12 hours after the surgery and coumadin shortly thereafter. The patient usually don't leave the hospital until their INR above 2.0. These are not hard and fast rules, and some physicians are more careful than others.
I know that Lipotor can artiificially lower TSH and cause a false positive for hyperthyroidism.
