Avatar m tn Prosthetic Valve patient - no atrial fib, normal left atrial size, high level of fitness and activity, and wonder if the added benefit documented in some studies through the addition of aspirin applies to me, or if I am in a different clinical population, where the added risk of bleeding really wouldn't be offset by lower risk of stroke. Have discussed with my Cardiologist; he recommends the Aspirin, perhaps going to every other day, but acknowldges that there is not a clear-cut answer.
Avatar n tn Ask your doctor. My view is NO! A pacemaker does nothing to stop AFib and the AFib is why Coumadin is being taken.
Avatar n tn She takes 20mg of lasix and continues to have little urine output. Other meds include Coumadin, Lipitor, Coreg, Aspirin, 7.5mg Morphine and 20mg Cymbalta (for post herpetic neuralgia) - currently tapering off the morphine. She still has a 20% ejection rate, the same as when the pacer was placed. It seems that the significant breathing difficulty started after the latest hospitalization (I’m guessing that the fluid replacement contributed.
Avatar m tn As far as generalized organ damage that concerns me goes i am not currently on any blood thinners other then as aspirin a day as a safety net but i think unless i am mistaken that there is so much controversy over the use of coumadin and in speaking w.
Avatar n tn I have been taking Lipitor for the last 10 years and lately I have developed muscle pains. I was told the pain might be because of the Lipitor. I stopped taking them for a couple of months, the pain was much less however my cloestrol level was back to 290. I would appreciate any insight or suggestions.
Avatar f tn There is much controversy about cholesterol, but it is muted because of pharmaceutical financial interests in statins. Half of those who die of strokes or heart attacks have no history of high cholesterol. DeBakey discounted cholesterol. My own doctor pays no attention to it. What is the true role of cholesterol and how should one proceed? I don't know, but I won't take Lipitor.
Avatar f tn Duke University Medical Center recommended the target range of 3.0 to 3.5 for the St Jude Medical leaflet valve. I have been on it since 1993. The instability has been only the last three years or so. Here's a link to a presentation that suggests vitamin K and the logic for doing so; http://www.dcpa.us/slides09/sun05.trujillo.vitk.
Avatar f tn The Lipitor package insert recommends that a test of your liver function should be done prior to and at 12 weeks following both the start of therapy with Lipitor and any increase of dose, and periodically (for example, every six months) thereafter. If there are any changes in your liver function, drinking alcohol may make it worse.
Avatar n tn People taking lipitor are recommended to avoid alcohol in their diet because it raises the triglyceride levels, another lipid which is a risk factor for heart disease. Going to soft drinks would be far more beneficial for your body obviously but if this is impossible I would switch your lipitor to the mornings. Lipitor, unlike some statin drugs, can be taken any time of the day.

Avatar n tn In the past no one has been able to indentify why these levels are up. I did take lipitor 5 years ago for about three months and the doctor stopped it after the elevation of the cpk. It is still high, with a most recent reading of 709. A few weeks ago I thought I had the flu. Every muscle in me was hurting. I stayed in bed for three days. I felt a little better and returned to my desk job at work. Now the muscle pain has come back, especially in my arms, neck and both sides of my groin.

His cardiologist will not perform a cardioversion for him until his INR is within an acceptable level but it never is! The coumadin nurses frequently tell him his levels are too high and tell him to not take any coumadin for days at a time then the cardiologist tells him his INR is top low and they post pone the cardioversion.
Avatar f tn I am preparing to have an ablation to correct my afib and they want me on coumadin to prepare for it and then after. My baseline INR was .9. Not sure what I need to do. Should I take the coumadin and just let the clinic monitor the INR readings?

Avatar m tn I am a coumadin patient due to atrium enlargement, an hx of afib and 2 prosthetic valves. I also have chronic neck and back pain. Is the use of far infrared heating pads OK with coumadin? Thanks.
Avatar f tn We usually admit the patients 3 days prior to the surgery when we withhold coumadin and start heparin once the INR is less than 2.0. After surgery we usually start the heparin 12 hours after the surgery and coumadin shortly thereafter. The patient usually don't leave the hospital until their INR above 2.0. These are not hard and fast rules, and some physicians are more careful than others.

378273 tn?1262097621 I'm also an afib sufferer and have been on coumadin for 6 years and haven't experienced any excessive bleeding or bruising with it. I was pleasantly surprised with how little it changed my life. I generally undergo a PT/INR measurement every 4 to 6 weeks and there seems to be no problem maintaining an INR level between 2 and 3. I'm 67 and also run and exercise every day. I also eat salads, greens and vegetables daily and haven't had to limit my diet because of coumadin.
