Lexapro weight loss depression

Common Questions and Answers about Lexapro weight loss depression

Avatar n tn I am about to start Lexapro and wondered how you are doing. Have you lost? Gained weight? I too don't want to gain weight, that would just add to my anxiety. Thanks for any info.
Avatar f tn Hello all! I am currently taking Lexapro 10mg due to some recnet depression in my life. I just started to take it this past weekend and I have noticed that I am getting some mild pain in my right arm, and sometimes some pain in my chest. Is this a side effect that I havent read about?
Avatar n tn I got perscribed to Lexapro(10mg-now 20)about 3 months ago for Depression & Anxiety... but now my therapist is saying I have OCD and Body Dysmorphic Disorder too.I feel like my Lexapro is working, but about once a month I have a huge break down and feel like the medicane is changing my personality to much and that I'm not myself anymore. Im scared that I'm going to have to be on medication for the rest of my life and I dont want to have to rely on it.
Avatar n tn For me, I believe that a side effect of Lexapro was weight gain. I believe that the weight gain is due to the fact that Lexapro has affected my thyroid. I have done some research and I believe that Lexapro will mess with your metabolic rate. I am in the process of having my thyroid tested again in a few weeks. I have been off of Lexapro for almost two weeks. I have lost almost ten pounds. I don't know if this is a side effect for others, but I do believe that my thyroid is kicking in.
Avatar m tn My big question is when are the doctors going to stop telling everyone that they do not gain weight on antidepressants, I have been on lexapro now for 2 yrs, and have gained 25 lbs, I watch what I eat exercise, dance, etc... and the weight will NOT come off. My doctor tells me well you are are at the age of premenopause and at that age, that you are going to gain weight, well I am getting tired of hearing it.
Avatar f tn People taking SSRIs like Lexapro can complain about weight gain; and there are many that complain about weight loss. Remember, that anxiety can often lead to depression which in itself can cause weight gain for a viarity of reasons. I actually lost weight while taking an SSRI, but I think it had to do a lot more with a normal exercise routine and watching what I ate.
Avatar m tn Hi there! These kinds of medications definitely can cause either weight loss or weight gain in some people. Your weight gain was pretty dramatic, so like you said, I'm sure the Lexapro was only one factor. Let me ask you this, have you TRIED any other medications? If not, I would recommend that you do that first. Zoloft would be one that I would personally recommend asking your doc about. Like Lexapro, many people have great success on it, and it's easily tolerated by most people.
616534 tn?1233240097 My doctor just took me off Effexor and put me on Lexapro. My weight is part of my depression. I can't afford to gain.
Avatar n tn I remember my doc telling me one time that less than 2% of people have TRUE, unexplained weight gain with Lexapro. The other ones that gain weight, it's a simple calories in versus calories out deal (that was true for me). And even that number is suppose to be low. I know a couple people who never gained a pound on Lexapro (LUCKY). I don't know about cymbalta or wellbutrin, hopefully you can get good responses from those with experience!
Avatar n tn I was able to maintain a 40 lb weight loss for over two years. After only one month on Lexapro I gained 4 pounds. That was enough for me. I stopped the Lexapro and will have to look into some other drug therapy.
20790871 tn?1507165021 4% body fat), my training intensified, and I started two medications for depression (Lexapro and Wellbutrin). I gained the weight back after I quit competitive running, but the hair thinning persists. Another thing to note, I have never been an illness-prone person, but lately I have been getting sick a lot and have had several infections over the past few months.
Avatar m tn I am considerably active for a college student, and have noticed a healthy weight loss of about 8-9 lbs. since I started eating healthier earlier this month. Will Lexapro cause me to pack on pounds? I am very good at curbing my cravings and haven't had any junk food in a long time. I am determined to not gain weight, but will it be inevitable regardless of my eating habits? Or can it be avoided?
Avatar f tn Some individuals do not have any change in their weight while some actually have a weight loss. I would go ahead and take the medication as prescribed and if you find that you have side effects that are overly bothersome or that outweigh the benefit of the medication, once again, talk with your provider to seek alternative treatment(s). Good luck to you and let us know how you are doing.
480705 tn?1208232150 Not a good drug for keeping weight off. The depression drugs are rather sneaky with weight, so I hope that if the Lexapro fixes your problems that it doesn't cause weight gain. I took it for 5 weeks back a while ago and did well with had no weight gain. Thankfully it's an easy drug to get on and get off of. I wish you well and can get some answers for your medical issues.
Avatar n tn I thought these 2 meds were known to be weight neutral or cause weight loss. My doctor knows my concern about the weight issue as this is something I have never fought to maintain while everything else in life seems to be a fight. If I stopped taking all meds, would I lose the weight and go back to my normal size. I do lack motivation that's for sure! I think or say I will start a program and don't.
Avatar f tn My physician responded to my request for help, and being discouraged about my lack of weight loss by trying to prescribe prozac for weight loss and of course depression. Since when does Prozac aide weight loss? I did not receive any response to what else could I do/try/ who to see etc. Or an answer as to what they syntroid was doing for me, since I was still not losing weight, but losing hair, and still had high triglycerides. Also no response to my ??
Avatar n tn I take topamax to control seizures and I must say that I am surprised doctors prescribe it for weight loss alone, and that you are willing to put up with the side effects of it just for weight loss when there are other weight loss drugs out there. The "goofiness and loss of words" bothers me tremendously. I have been taking it since April and that hasn't abated any. Unfortunately I did not experience any weight loss or loss of appetite from it like everyone says. I take 200 mg a day.
Avatar n tn im on a new drug called cymbalta its known to help you with wt loss an to not be as hungry but it is in place of my lexapro its for manic depression
358304 tn?1409713092 And if you decided to stop on your own, why? And were you prescribed this med for depression or GAD? (or both?) Lexapro does NOT carry the same warning regarding stopping abruptly as many of the other anti-anxiety meds, but it can't hurt to taper off this med. You were only on it for 2 months and I seriously doubt you developed any sort of dependence or even a tolerence for it. I think your underlying anxiety is creating this fear of what your body is going through right now.
Avatar n tn I took 10 mg. of lexapro for 1-1/2 years. Tapered off the drug last month and now it has been 3 weeks since I've taken the pill. Headaches & dizziness are my biggest complaint. How long will it last and is there something I should take to ease these symptoms?
Avatar n tn I have been on Lexapro for about 3 months started on 10 mg then increased to 20mg for anxiety and started having side effects...weight loss, memory loss, nausea, itchy red patches on my skin and uncontrollable yawning. But the biggest concern was my weight loss, since I am already struggling to keep weight on. So my doctor wanted me to taper off by going to 10 mg for four days to finish the medication then start a new medicine Pristiq...
Avatar n tn Can anyone tell me what dosages they are on when the Topamax is sole for weight loss in conjunction with depression? (I also take Wellbutrin). Thankyou for any information you might give me.
Avatar n tn I would say that it is a 50/50 chance whether you would lose weight in the long run as the product wasn't designed as a weight loss product. (but I'm not a doctor so your dr. might be able to tell you what to expect).
Avatar m tn Yes, Lexapro can cause weight changes, so it can increase your weight. Usually people are able to maintain a healthy weight because the drug will not cause weight changes in all individuals and because most people affected by weight changes are able to maintain their weight through diet and exercise. If you have been really conscious of your image, then this can be just your personality or it can be an obsession.
Avatar n tn I was told by my phys. that Lexapro would not cause a weight gain while taking it for slight depression. If it causes weight gain, I need to get off this stuff. Please provide feedback.
Avatar f tn I am currently on Wellbutrin and Lexapro. I was having much difficulty losing weight so I went to a Weight Loss Clinic, where they perscribed phentermine, hydrochlorthiazide and a fiber pill with calcium. I was wondering how dangerous this is and if I could/should stop my antidressant/anxiety medications abruptly or ween myself of them while I am on the weight loss pills.
Avatar f tn Lexapro is horrible with weight gain... I have gained 15 pounds in six months... I am in good shape 5'4 was 135 pounds now i am 150...
Avatar n tn I feel a little less bloated, and I can feel the muscle underneath the fat which is better than before, so I think some of the bloating was due to the Lexapro. The weight has leveled off to 30s pound over my target (that is, my weight 4 years ago). I think the nutritionist is starting to take me seriously, and said that the SSRI's can effect metabolism and that can take a while to go back to 'normal'.
Avatar f tn Depression has made me gain 20 pounds in a year, and NOT from "just eating." I have spent the whole year trying to work it off - to no avail. I go to the gym, I don't drink alcohol, don't smoke, I do some form of exercise at least 3 days a week, and I am taking 300 mg of Wellbutrin. I'm losing it because of the limited results from working out as well as the "miracle weight loss drug" Wellbutrin. EVERYONE seems to lose weight on it!
