Lexapro vs celexa weight gain

Common Questions and Answers about Lexapro vs celexa weight gain

Avatar f tn I'm on Celexa now but am wondering if maybe Lexapro would be better since anxiety is my biggest concern. Has anyone had suggest with Lexapro. Also does Lexapro cause weight gain like Celexa?
Avatar f tn Granted, we are all different, but with that being said, I had virtually no side effects from Lexapro. Celexa is very close in chemical makeup, but that one didn't work well for me for my anxiety. I know it does for others, with minimal side effects, so it may be a good choice.
Avatar f tn As to adding the wellbutrin, this is usually done when there is weight gain or sexual dysfunction, because wellbutrin is a stimulating antidepressant -- not usually for primary anxiety. But again, it's all trial and error. Some have tried to make it more scientific -- some believe eeg studies can tell which drugs will work and which won't and some think brain scans can tell something, but the evidence is weak.
Avatar m tn Can I react differently to the Celexa than the Lexapro? Is it possible that with the Celexa I will have less side-effects since it's a more dirty version of the Lexapro it's suppose to have more side-effects no? Also, the only one SSRI who work in the past for my panic disorder is the Paxil... but hte Paxil do nothing for the social anxiety, like all the antidepressant meds I try...
Avatar n tn I gained a lot of Paxil, but didn't gain much at all on Lexapro or Celexa, whatever that means. Didn't gain at all on imipramine, a tricyclic. The side effects are very individual, and those who are prone to weight problems without the meds will have a harder time. Cymbalta is a more stimulating drug than ssris, so maybe you will not have this problem as much with it.
Avatar n tn I got off it because I was uncomfortable with the weight gain/tiredness. I started taking Wellbutrin about a month ago and have been more anxious than without drugs plus I am agitated and bouncing off the walls. I also awoke with depression on several days and am typically not a depressed person. I have been on Wellbutrin in the past and it has never helped with anxiety by itself. The combination of Lexipro and Wellbutrin has worked for me in the past.
Avatar n tn Somehow tonight (that's why I was searching out lexapro and weight gain)I just mentioned the lexapro to my trainer. They advised that they have several clients on lexapro that are having the same trouble with weight gain. They seem to think that it may have something to do limiting the control we have over our intake. I just know I've been spinning in circles.
Avatar n tn Oh, and I went back on the Lexapro at a low dose, only half a day. Is it less likely I'd gain weight on a lesser dosage or does it not work that way?
Avatar n tn if I can be switched to Wellbutrin, what do you all think about that change? I have no serious side effects other than the weight gain on Lexapro, however, the weight gain is making me feel worse than I did when I started the medication.
Avatar n tn After taking celexa I did not notice any change to my weight, but approximately one year, I started to gain weight. I thought celexa was supposed to give me back the energy, opposite!!!! didn't feel like working out at all. two years later, I put on about 10 pounds. (i'm only 5'4'', and was 118llb when I started Celexa). It is devastating as my depression is mostly related to self esteem and body image issues. I am now over 125llb and going out of my mind.
Avatar n tn I then got on Celexa, felt fine. I did not gain any weight on Celexa but I couldn't lose any either. I was changed from Celexa to Lexapro and on Lexapro I gained 50 pounds in two years. I went back to Celexa. I was working out and dieting for six months. But I did NOT lose a thing. (I have also been on Lamictal, with the other, started at the end of taking Lexapro and then been on it since). I got off of Celexa and feel terrible.
Avatar f tn My old psysician did tell me about the weight gain with paxil so I could not do it, I tried but my anxiety was so high about the weight gain.. Its your choice and you really don't know which was is going to be the best for you but my advice would be to listen to your doctor. If that doesn't work then you can always try something else. I am in the process to switching to Lexapro and I am discouraged because i'm also very tired, your body doesn't get used to it?
Avatar f tn I've been on Celexa for 6 weeks now. I knew about the possible weight gain so I started upping my exercise and really watching my food intake from the get-go. I have actually lost weight since I started taking it. You couldn't tell that from my weight tracker because I had surgery last week and have gained a couple pounds back but that's to be expected I guess. I just encourage you that not everyone gains weight on Celexa.
Avatar f tn Maybe Lexapro would work instead of Zoloft or Celexa since it seems to work on anxiety more and is a cleaner version of Celexa. Maybe Lexapro won't make me so jittery. Celexa did work better than the other SSRIs for me, just jittery and Lexapro is the newer version. And, do I have just depression/anxiety, or do I have a mood disorder?! Just for the record I do take 100mg of Lamictal, which doesn’t really do anything but I’m also on a low dose of it.
Avatar n tn However, Lexapro is also supposed to be one of the MILDEST of the SSRI's and also have a decreased chance of causing certain side effects, including the decreased sex drive as well as weight gain, which seems to be one of the most prominent side effects of individuals taking SSRI's. I am not sure of the exact percentages of getting those particular side effects on Lexapro, yet I know they are almost twice as unlikely on Lexapro than per se Paxil or even Celexa.
Avatar n tn Most ADs cause weight gain. Wellbutrin usually does not. But, wellbutrin can exacerbate anxiety. Effexor affects people differently. It makes some people tired, makes others more energetic. You can decide for yourself whether your depression is caused by environmental factors, or whether it is "endogenous" or coming from within. I do not believe there have been long term studies on SSRIs, but the patents on some ssris (paxil, prozac) are expired, so they are available as generics.
Avatar n tn I was on Lexapro for about 2 mos. Once I realized that the weight gain (5 lbs in 3 weeks), sleeping all the time, inability to orgasm were definately from this drug, I weaned myself off of the 10 mgs. about 2 weeks ago. I feel very strange. I am dizzy, I can drive but feel like I am on some heavy drug. I am still very tired and my legs feel strange in bed. How long do the symptoms stay??? I researched this to find out if it was the Lex. withdrawl that was causing these feelings.
Avatar n tn Hi. I'm on tamoxifen so I can't take any meds which inhibit cyp2D6 enzymes. I've been on almost ALL SSRI ( Effexor, lexapro, celexa, nortriptyline, fetzima, & viibryd) & my depression worsens with them (suicidal thoughts, etc). The only one that has helped is remeron but every time I've had to return to remeron I gain weight. I'm usually 110-112 and eat very well & workout almost everyday.
Avatar f tn I would like to know the same question I have been taking bipolar medications for 15 years now all the ones I have been prescride have made me gain weight and a'lot Abilify Celexa not sure if for Bipolar or not have heard yes have read no Welbutron. Topamax I have been on 11 months I have lost 92 pounds on but I am on 400mg but I do not want to eat sleep my height to is only 4 10 1/2 I weight 286. Now Im 194. That was from the other bipolar medications.
Avatar f tn I think if you read the pi on paxil it has equal weight gain to weight loss making it weight neutral. My friend takes it and it never effected her weight at all. So I wouldn't let that scare you as that is patient dependent. However, you tried it in the past and had agitation/ hyperactivity from it. (you'd probably lose weight over the longhaul with that . . .) So you may want to consider lexapro or celexa.
Avatar n tn Hi Ryan, I have a degenerating spinal injury, I have many disc prolapses and I also have grandmal epilepsy. I was bruitally attacked and my spine was damaged in the 3 different sections of the spine. I got grave's disease when I gave birth to my son and live on a concoction of meds.

Avatar n tn When my Psychatrist decided to try me on Topamax it was because of my anieity over my weight gain with the standard mood stabilizers. Within these past two years I have lost 38 pounds taking this medicine. I will say that I have done low- carb about 8 of those months but ashamed to say no exercise.I have suffered with migrane headaches for about 10 years - they are gone . I think i have had one mild one .
Avatar n tn ) I went off Paxil due to frustration over 1) somnolence (sleeping good part of weekend days away), 2) asthenia (the 5 mile run I'd done for years became a difficult chore), 3) lessened motivation (one of the good parts of anxiety, I guess), 4) sexual dysfunction and 5) weight gain (5 side-effects in one patient--not bad, eh?) Withdrawl symptoms were unpleasant but not near as crippling as I've read about (mostly brain zaps).
Avatar m tn I have been on Lexapro (10mg.) for about a little over a year now. Before that I was on Celexa. I tried stopping Lexapro a few months back. My Dr. told me to take one tablet every other day for two weeks. I did that and got very sick feeling all the symptoms that you all have. I went back on it only to stop again a week ago...I have dizziness to the extreme, I feel very disorientated and extremely tired. I feel like I am getting the onset of a cold. I also gained 15 lbs.
Avatar n tn Hi. I had breast cancer. Went through 1 1/2 years of hell & have experienced major depression. This seemed to correspond to the menopause I was put into w chemo (at 38). At the time my onc put me on Remeron which worked well but I gained 20# (I was 112#). She referred me to a psych doc since I didn't like weight gain & needed his expertise.. I am now on tamoxifen which limits the antideppressants I can take. I've tried lots!!!
881463 tn?1245349249 for example paroxetine causes sedation and weight gain, and prozac causes activation and a bit of weight loss. Citalopram is weight and sleep neutral in most people. All SSRIs and SNRIs have sexual side effects, EXCEPT perhaps Pristiq, a new SNRI that has very low incidence of sexual side effects in the one or two trials that have been done with the medication.
Avatar m tn It made me somewhat mellow, but that's about it. Oh, and weight gain. I heard Zoloft is the most prescribed SSRI, and a recent study of all 12 major anti-depressants concluded that Zoloft was most effective. Does Zoloft cause weight gain? I already take Wellbutrin because a) it has helped me quit smoking cigarettes, and b) helps control my appetite, and c) there aren't sexual side-effects.
415867 tn?1323369103 Newer antidepressants don’t have the same side effect. While Paxil and Zoloft do cause some weight gain, other SSRIs, like Prozac, Celexa and Lexapro, don’t. For Paxil and Zoloft, the weight gain can add up to five to 40 pounds a year. Some people do experience weight gain with Lexapro or Celexa, but most don’t. In this case, it is not a surprise to have idiosyncratic responses, since the chemical structure of all the SSRIs is so similar.
