Lexapro and alcohol consumption

Common Questions and Answers about Lexapro and alcohol consumption

lexapro

Avatar n tn My daughter's pdoc gave her this advice about drinking when taking an AD (she's on Lexapro). She said that alcohol is a depressant and the effect can take three days to show up so people often don't realize that the depression they are feeling is because of the alcohol. When you are taking an antidepressant you are doing the opposite of what you are trying to accomplish by using any depressant (in this case alcohol). Food for thought.
Avatar f tn You definitely are NOT SUPPOSED to drink while taking Lexapro. The label on the bottle and the information on Lexapro's official Web site says so. Also, drinking in itself is not really a great idea when dealing with anxiety and/or depression. BUT, I have been taking Lexapro for 3 weeks now. I usually don't drink, but last weekend I visited my brother and went out with him and his friends a couple times and drank (aka got drunk--not horribly drunk, but drunk enough).
Avatar m tn Inform your healthcare provider about all medications and supplements you're taking to avoid potential drug interactions. Withdrawal: Don't abruptly stop taking Lexapro, as this can lead to withdrawal symptoms. Discontinue under medical supervision. Monitoring: Regularly attend follow-up appointments to monitor your response to the medication and any necessary adjustments.
Avatar f tn I was on Lexapro for a long time and never had issues with moderate alcohol consumption. I now take Zoloft and feel dizzy and panicky with one beer, so no alcohol for me on Zoloft. Perhaps the combo of drugs you're on doesn't mix well with alcohol. Are you to stay on both drugs long term or will you wean off amtriptyline and just take Lexapro?

Avatar f tn I was on medication after removal surgery but my prescription lapsed and it was not renewed. I let it go, the doctors didn't realize and somehow it just fell through the cracks and got lost in the shuffle. Needless to say, I am now back on regular thyroid medication. I greatly appreciate your information to my question and if you have any additional insight, I would welcome it. Thank you very much!
Avatar n tn No disrespect, but this is one of the more absurd questions I have read. You are on an anti-depressant (lexapro) and consuming alcohol, a CNS depressant, AND taking another mind-numbing substance (Vicodin). You should be taking Lexapro ONLY to deal with depression or whatever reason you are taking it. Both other meds are contraindicated for Lexapro. Smarten up.
Avatar f tn Alcohol and antidepressants should not be mixed. I'm sure you already know this. Many of these meds go through the liver and so does alcohol. Are you feeling alright? Have you been feeling sick?

Avatar f tn Even if a TIPS is functioning, active alcohol use can override its beneficial effects and can thus lead to the ascites and the variceal bleed recurring. Relapses like this really do necessitate that he enter into a relapse prevention program.
Avatar m tn I know that I'm an alcoholic, and have been since I was 10. When I was a kid, I used to get into my mom's wine and beer, and later got with friends with the same interests and started developing my drinking career. Over the years, I have been successful in my drinking career (as well as my scientific and family life) BUT the difference now is that I can't stop. I know about AA and have been to rehab and all that stuff. I have cirrhosis and continue to drink approx.

Avatar n tn Some subjective improvement may be seen right away, but this is usually due to the overall benefits of alcohol detoxification. If alcohol consumption continues, vitamin supplementation alone is not enough to improve the symptoms of most individuals. Nutritional therapy with intervenous or intermuscular injections of multivitamins is beneficial to implement until the person can maintain adequate oral nutritional intake. Treatments also include vitamin supplementation (especially thiamine).

Avatar n tn ABSTRACT Alcohol consumption accelerates liver damage and diminishes the anti-hepatitis C virus (HCV) effect of interferon alfa (IFN-) in patients with HCV infection. It is unknown, however, whether alcohol enhances HCV replication and promotes HCV disease progression. The availability of the HCV replicon containing hepatic cells has provided a unique opportunity to investigate the interaction between alcohol and HCV replicon expression.
