Levemir vs nph

Common Questions and Answers about Levemir vs nph

levemir

Avatar f tn My daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when she was 5 years old. She has been giving NPH with Humalog. It hasn't been working much though because she's high most of the time even when we watch what she eats and exercises. It just doesn't make much sense why the NPH isn't working anymore. She's on a sliding scale for Humalog and she gives a shot of 40 units of NPH in the morning.
Avatar n tn About a month ago, my doctor changed my long acting insulin from Novolin NPH to Lantus. This completely threw me off and I ended up being woken up by paramedics 3 times in 1 week. My blood sugar would be normal before bed and then by morning it had gone to 1.8. When I would eat a snack before bed to keep my blood sugar from dropping, I would go high - 13.0-15.0 on average. My doctor has now switched me back to my Novolin NPH and I am still having a hard time getting back on track.
Avatar n tn I am wondering whether this is some hormone related issue ,or whether I have developed some resistance vs humalog so it doesnt work well (and the lantus is too much). I have given up using any alcohol or doing demanding exercise(jogging) for a while becuase they make the matters worse (though i really enjoy exercising). any suggestions to why this is happening or how i can take care of this would be greatly helpful.
Avatar n tn He is now working at a stressful job in finance in NYC and lives with his girlfriend. He is currently taking 2 shots a day of Humilin Reg. and NPH. Over the last six months he has bottomed out at least 8 times usually at lunch time and the paramedics have had to be called to his workplace. Yesterday when they arrived his Blood Sugar was 19. It seems he drops so quickly that he is unable to treat himself by eating a snack. He keeps himself healthy by eating well and is overall good shape.
Avatar n tn When you eat, you need the fast acting insulin like Novolog to act quickly to cover the meal. For some, Lantus and Levemir act the same. For me, Levemir seemed to work better in that it provided more consistency to my blood sugar levels. I like Levemir. I have switched to 2 shots per day (morning and night) instead of just taking the 1 shot at night, because the 1 shot at night may not cover the 24 hours.
Avatar n tn If you believe your are reacting badly to Lantus (or any other medications) you should ask your physician for an alternative, at least to verify it is the medication and not some other factor that is causing the problem. Lantus is popular for it's 24 hour action, but so is Levemir (Novo Nordisk). NPH insulin can also be used for long acting insulin, though two injections may be needed to get the 24 hour coverage.
Avatar n tn Lows in the early hours of the morning are quite common when NPH (of which Humalin N is a brand)is injected before bed. It happens because NPH peaks 6-10 hours after being injected. It doesn't always happen because there is up to 30% variation in absorption and the level of action with NPH. Your wife is probably being put on Lantus or Levemir basal insulin, both of which are peakless. And the intraday variability is much lower. So things will improve.
Avatar n tn In my case, it takes a bit less Lantus than it did NPH when I was on it. It sounds as if you do need to increase your dosage... I personally don't notice a huge difference between one or two units more or less. I would suggest that you don't wait for your appointment, but call your doctor and tell him or her what your sugars are running (write down the results so you have a record) and ask if you should increase by another 2 units. I personally love Lantus...
Avatar f tn I see the confusion If I understand you, you think Levemir is used for carbohydrates. Levemir is a basle insulin, meaning it works for 24 hours. Like a background insulin. the amount of Levemir taken has nothing to do with the amount of carbohydrates (carbs) you eat. That type of insulin is called a bolis insulin, like Apedra, Novalog... that insulin is taken according to how many carbs are eating and YOUR particular carb to insulin ratio.
Avatar n tn My doctor started me in September last year on just NPH and my dose got quite high. (65 units in the evening and about 45 in the morning) Then he added the bolus, "as needed", without an adjustment. He did say that as long as I was taking consistent readings, and was able to do the carb counting, that I could adjust the bolus to match my readings, trying to figure out the carb ratio by trying to maintain a difference of no more than plus/minus 2 mmol/L between before meal and after.
Avatar n tn I went back to my NovoRapid, Novolin NPH routine. Will see how I feel in a couple of days. Today went well. I want to find out before discussion with the dr. if this could be the problem, otherwise they will have nothing to compare it to because as I am finding out there are many different reactions as there are people. They had problems believing me when I told them about the high blood pressure reaction to Levemir. Funny the blood pressure returned to normal when I got rid of it.
Avatar n tn The Levemir is NOT on a sliding scale. It is a given does once a day Or twice a day. 12 hours apart. is his 224 after eating or first thing in the morning before food or drink?
Avatar n tn Hi. I'm not a medical professional, just the parent of a kid with diabetes. What insulin is he using? If he's not using NPH as his long acting insulin, skipping meals isn't as big of deal. Something like Lantus or Levemir as the long acting would work fine, then for meals when he can eat he would just give a bolus shot with Novolog or some other fast acting.
Avatar n tn m on novolog and levemir (levemir is just at bedtime).
Avatar f tn Also is anyone combining both Novilin NPH and Lantus with Lantus at bedtime and the NPH at a lower dose around noon.
Avatar n tn I have recently changed to new insulin. I am now taking Levemir in the morning and at night taking Apidra. Since I have changed to this insulin my blood sugar is going upby alot. I was at 176 this morning and within a few hours it was at 296. This has never happened before and I have not changed anything in my eating. Why is it going up so much and how can I make this stop?
Avatar n tn I think the problem centers on the fac that she is on Novolog and NPH in the morning and then she is on Novolog and Lantusin the evening. NPH lasts 12-18 hours and Lantus lasts 18-26 hours. I think those doses are overlapping. My question to the Dr. would be why is she on Lantus and NPH??!?!?!?!? It is important to note that a diluted blood sample will produce a diluted reading.
Avatar n tn It was working well for a year. Then blood was becoming high, Doctor gave me LEVEMIR. If I take 10 units of humalog, after two hours sugar drops 4 points, I think this is the right dose for humalog for what I eat. I eat 60 gram Carb every meal. But 3 hours, sugar tries to go low, but insead, it bounces back and proceede to values and I start to feel hypo, though I never see sugar 9. It is not hypo value, why sugar bounces up, why feel shaky, fear etc. I use LEVIMIR as base insulin.
1353681 tn?1387083733 Hi, I have not used lantus, but I do use levemir. Both are medium acting basal insulins. Levemir works best injected twice a day. I inject just before going to bed (22 units), and when I wake up in the morning (8 units). As you can see, I don't use the same dose morning and evening, as I find I need more basal insulin at night when I am inactive, than during the day when I am active. You will need to adjust your dosage based on your target blood sugar levels.
Avatar n tn The doctors are saying that she has Normal Pressure Hydochephalus, but she is also exhibiting symptoms unrelated to NPH. Her reflexes are very jumpy and her walking is very choppy. She explains that when she is sitting for long periods or lays down to go to sleep her quad muscles tighten uncomfortably. When the doctor performs simple reflex tests, such as hitting her knee, her leg seems to jump all the way from her hip. Any ideas what could be causing this?
Avatar m tn Since the ventricles enlarge slowly so fluid pressure may not be as high as in other types of hydrocephalus. The parts of brain mostly affected in NPH, are those that affect the legs, bladder and cognitive mental processes like memory, reasoning, speech and problem solving. Treatment options are limited, surgery can relieve and those not candidates for this will have to be given behavioral therapy. Hope this helps. takecare.
Avatar n tn My grandson is a Type 1 diabetic. He takes Lantus at night, NPH and Humalog at Breakfast, and Humalog at evening meal. He measures his blood sugar six time a day: 7:30am (breakfast), 9:30 am, noon, 5:30 pm (dinner), 7:30 pm, and 9:30 pm. My concern is the apparent difference in effectiveness of the Humalog which he takes at 7:30 am and 5:30 pm. He measures his blood sugar two hours after taking the Humalog (@ 9:30 am and @ 7:30 pm).
605458 tn?1539228808 My dog, a 170lb Rotty/Shepherd mix, is on 40u NPH every morning. Recently, his sugars have been running too high and my vet has mentioned changing his insulin to Vetsulin, I think. Is this more effective for a dog than human NPH? Anyone have a pet on it? When he had insulin twice a day his sugar went too low, but that was when we first started him on it. He did great on the 40u NPH once a day, but lately he isn't getting the same results and nothing else has changed.
Avatar f tn Im a type 1 diabetic, since 1991, and have been on NPH since 1998. Last November i had a huge problem, a bad low, which caused me to hallucinate, then sadly my new wife got hurt. Then this continued until march when then i was told my body was rejecting the NPH, is this common? My wife has since filed for divorce, i am now on new insulin, Lantus, and i cant even talk with her.
