I have had diabetes for 30 years.I had much better control when I was using humuln n and humulin r . I am now taking lantus and novolog .I have had to increase my dosages and am still having a hard time getting control of my blood sugars. My aic is 7.8 this quarter vs 8. last quarter. should I go back to using the older drugs that gave me better control?
I am taking Humulin-N but my sugar level every morning is around 225.
When you eat, you need the fast acting insulin like Novolog to act quickly to cover the meal. For some, Lantus and Levemir act the same. For me, Levemir seemed to work better in that it provided more consistency to my blood sugar levels. I like Levemir. I have switched to 2 shots per day (morning and night) instead of just taking the 1 shot at night, because the 1 shot at night may not cover the 24 hours.
You're a good friend to be concerned about your friends well being. If "N" is Humulin N, there is no "standard" Humulin N dose that will work for all people or even for the same person in all situations. This applies to other insulin types too. If your friends at home test results show low glucose levels "several times per week" it is time to have his/her insulin dosages re-evaluated by their physician.
I see the confusion
If I understand you, you think Levemir is used for carbohydrates. Levemir is a basle insulin, meaning it works for 24 hours. Like a background insulin. the amount of Levemir taken has nothing to do with the amount of carbohydrates (carbs) you eat. That type of insulin is called a bolis insulin, like Apedra, Novalog... that insulin is taken according to how many carbs are eating and YOUR particular carb to insulin ratio.
Duration of action is different for different insulins. We have rapid acting; older insulin Humalin-N has an onset of 15 - 30 minutes compared to the modern insulins such as Aspart (novorapid for me) and Humalog, which have an onset of about 10 - 15 minutes.
Moderate acting insulins are the ones we use for basal (background) insulin. Examples are Humalin-R (older insulin), levemir, lantus etc.
Then we have the action profile: whether there is a peak or not.
I have been a type 1 diabetic for over 16 years and have always been taking around 6 units of R in the morning with some N. That has seemed to work fine until recently my lunch blood sugar levels have been sky high. I keep adding more R (i'm not at 10 units) and it seems like the R is not working at all. I have even changed the bottle just in case there was something wrong with that vial and nothing has changed.
The Levemir is NOT on a sliding scale. It is a given does once a day Or twice a day. 12 hours apart.

It was working well for a year. Then blood was becoming high, Doctor gave me LEVEMIR. If I take 10 units of humalog, after two hours sugar drops 4 points, I think this is the right dose for humalog for what I eat. I eat 60 gram Carb every meal. But 3 hours, sugar tries to go low, but insead, it bounces back and proceede to values and I start to feel hypo, though I never see sugar 9. It is not hypo value, why sugar bounces up, why feel shaky, fear etc. I use LEVIMIR as base insulin.
I have recently changed to new insulin. I am now taking Levemir in the morning and at night taking Apidra. Since I have changed to this insulin my blood sugar is going upby alot. I was at 176 this morning and within a few hours it was at 296. This has never happened before and I have not changed anything in my eating. Why is it going up so much and how can I make this stop?
If you are in US I understand you can buy the old insulins (Humulin N and R over the counter in wallmart quite cheaply). This will be better than none. You can also get cheaper meter and strips the same way. I assume you do know how to use insulin properly.
You need to check how you can get assistance. Do you have a Dr? Can you get access to any assistance. Sounds like you might be in trouble with really high blood sugars. Juice can make your sugars very high.
I use humulin n as a long acting insulin , generally about 45 units a day , and humulog to keep my sugars down , lately I have been checking my sugars every half hour to try and get a grip on them , my pharmasist told me that humulog lasts up to 2 hours , I have checked my sugars after injecting it , and it generally takes 1/2 an hour to come down 6 points ( 13 to 7 )

Zoe - I think Windchimes meant humulin insulin not huminsulin. Humulin is considered an intermediate acting insulin as its duration is 24 hours, but this can vary per individual. LANTUS, on the other hand, is considered long lasting as its duration is up to 36 hours.

Most dogs do well on either Novolin N or Humulin N. Personally, I found Humulin N to work better for my dog. The cost of a bottle of insulin at WalMart is about $25 compared to $50 for the same thing at a regular retail pharmacy.
7. There are many diets you can use. You are not limited to w/d, which the vets seem to push! I don't know if your dog vomited because he didn't like the w/d, but maybe you have an idea about why that happened. It may have been because his sugar was high.

With diet and exercise, my blood sugars were pretty good. When my gynecologist put me on Birth Control Pills, seems as if my blood sugars got worse. I am an insulin dependant diabetic. I was out of Levemir for several days and I tried to control with Novolog. Wednesday and Thursday I was running over 600. Yesterday I got my Levemir and started taking it right away. It took most of the day to get down to 350. I was feeling real sick all day. Sleepy, dizzy, nauseous. muscle weakness. I slept from 6:00 pm until 10:00 am. My numbers were up to 500 again. I got them back to 300 by 3:00 pm, but have continued to feel just as sick.

I take synthroid for hypothyrodism (10 yrs) and recently started taking crestor for high cholesterol (which is now within normal range) I 58, female and over-weight. Question: I want to start taking 200 mcg of chromium picolinate to help with my diabetes. Is this safe to take with the medications I am currently taking? Also, when is the best time to take it.
s it and I know that my dog is not getting enough nutrients from this diet. She was diagnosed in May of 2006 at the age of 5. She gets 3 units of HUMULIN N twice a day. Her last Frutosomine test was on the high side, "490" but her vet said that there is no need for concern.
Please help me with some diet ideas.
t giving him any the lantus people wants me on toujeo cause their patent was coming up so they stopped sampling it!!!! He offered me a levemir sample he said it had less weight gain than lantus and was the same., plus the levemir company still samples, I have been on this stuff for three weeks, I don't feel sluggish after taking it, I feel great, and the pen is nice!
