I have recently changed to new insulin. I am now taking Levemir in the morning and at night taking Apidra. Since I have changed to this insulin my blood sugar is going upby alot. I was at 176 this morning and within a few hours it was at 296. This has never happened before and I have not changed anything in my eating. Why is it going up so much and how can I make this stop?

You wife needs both the long acting insulin (Levemir) to be taken twice a day, and she will also need a fast acting insulin (such as novalog, Humalog or aphidra) to be taken just before eating so that it can 'cover' the food she eats (and with dose adjusted based on how much carbs and protein she eats).

That being said, I cannot concieve of any physician prescribing Lantus without the patient being given a precise and thorough explanation of how much to use and when. There is a BIG missing piece here. There are many excellent programs set up to monitor diabetics and keep them on the right track. Some are run by nurses or nurse practicioners. There are weekly meetings and they call you on the telephone to check-up on you and see how your glucose readings are doing and provide support.

I took 26 units I took 26 units. I getup at 4:30am. sugar came down to 7.8. I was lying down in the bed. At 6 am I got up, It was 9.7 again like other days. I cannot understand the situation. I told my doctor about my adrenal weakness. I will go to lab just 8 am to give blood . Now 6am, another 2 hours I cannot eat or take insulin. I will not increase more than 26 units for a week. Let me see if I can make it stable. I eat last at 5pm. Sugar was at bed time was 10.

The Levemir is NOT on a sliding scale. It is a given does once a day Or twice a day. 12 hours apart. is his 224 after eating or first thing in the morning before food or drink?

When you eat, you need the fast acting insulin like Novolog to act quickly to cover the meal. For some, Lantus and Levemir act the same. For me, Levemir seemed to work better in that it provided more consistency to my blood sugar levels. I like Levemir. I have switched to 2 shots per day (morning and night) instead of just taking the 1 shot at night, because the 1 shot at night may not cover the 24 hours.

Insurance forced me transition from Lantus to Levemir in February, and I haven't seen any difference in effectiveness. I am only taking one injection before bed, and it's worked just as well as Lantus in keeping my morning numbers in range. The biggest difference I noticed was that Lantus would burn every time I injected and Levemir does not.

I am curious as why you do not mention that Glargine(lantus) does NOT have a license for twice daily usage ,levemir has a licensce for OD and BD and has weight benefits for type 2 patients???? or are you heavily sponsored/involved with the manufactureres of glargine? I am interested.

I am an insulin dependant diabetic. I was out of Levemir for several days and I tried to control with Novolog. Wednesday and Thursday I was running over 600.
