Letrozole in breast cancer

Common Questions and Answers about Letrozole in breast cancer

femara

Avatar f tn Hello, Letrozole i s used to treat certain types of breast cancer (such as hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer) in women after menopause. Letrozole is also used to help prevent the cancer from returning. It is not used for fertility treatment rountinely. Consult a gynecologist to discuss about the treatment options. It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided.
Avatar f tn Interesting question here. I participated in the Tamoxifen and Raloxophene five-year breast cancer study (2000 - 2005). This required completing questionnaires about possible side-effects experienced, and one of the questions was "do you have dry mouth." First time I'd ever heard of it, but yes, since I was on the study I had dry mouth. I've been off the study now three years and continue to have dry mouth, sometimes worse than previously.
Avatar n tn Letrozole is usually used for treatment in breast cancer ..its possible they are also using it for treatment of precocious puberty...Lupron is usually the med used and I would tell you there are many problems associated with the use of it .So I have to say you need to ask for other opinions for your child maybe another doctor .
Avatar f tn I have just been diagnosed with breast cancer and have been offered a trial on Letrozole before and after surgery along with radiotherapy. I would appreciate knowing any side effects when taken along with Lithium and mood swings suffered if any.
1030058 tn?1252253572 I was diagnosed with Stage 1, Grade 1 ER+ right breast cancer in 2004. No node involvement at all. However it was also Her2neu positive. I had a trt mastectomy w/ 16 lymph nodes excised, all negative. I then had 4 cycles of Adriamycin and Cytoxin. I have now nearly completed 5 years of Arimidex, My Oncologist ir recommending that in October I change to Femara secondary to a clinical trial which has concluded that I am at some risk of the cancer still recurring.
Avatar m tn com/sites/articles/archive/2013/06/30/dagostino-cancer-research.aspx) is quite good at dealing with Breast Cancer in the brain. It works by trying to reduce the intake of Carbohydrates and Calories massively, aswell as protein. The reason for this is that the regular body cells are flexible enough to change accordingly in response to this, whereas the cancer is not. Therefore, it will starve to death. Any other treatments would be appreciated more than anything in the world.
1287560 tn?1272216521 Have asked before but want to hear of any positive stories using letrozole(femara) to help with ovulation, this drug is primarily a drug used to help with breast cancer and is still in research stage for fertility problems, my dr is talking with other gp's because is not happy to prescribe it to me.
1773487 tn?1331540488 While browsing, i found that Letroz is prescribed for breast cancer patients. Not sure how will this relate to conceive. Have any of you used this tablet while trying to get conceived? Kindly help...im very scared to continue with this tablet or not.

Avatar m tn Hi, my mom (79 years old) was diagnosed with breast cancer last week, I think it's stage I (less than 2cm in size, and lymp nodes are fine, whole body ultrasound scan + lung/head CT are also fine). here is her report: ER + 90%; PR + 40%; AR + 70%; C-erbB-2 ++ (waiting for FISH results); P53 -; Ki-67 + 20%; CK5/6 -; E-cad +; EGFR weak + Doctor has prescribed letrozole (mainly because of her age). I'm thinking surgery might be a better option. any advice? Thank you!
Avatar f tn Dear river1980, Both Femara (letrozole) and Arimidex (anastrozole) are aromatase inhibitors used in the treatment of hormone receptor positive breast cancer in post menopausal women. Aromatase inhibitors block the enzyme aromatase (found in the body's muscle, skin, breast and fat), which is used to convert androgens (hormones produced by the adrenal glands) into estrogen. In the absence of estrogen, tumors dependent on this hormone for growth will shrink.
Avatar n tn A mass of breast cancer is actually composed of a mixed population of cancer cells. Some cells are strongly ER positive, some only mildly so, and some are even ER negative (do not contain estrogen receptors). When exposed to an aromatase inhibitor like letrozole, those cells which are strongly ER positive are very susceptible to the effects of this drug and either die off or stop multiplying.
Avatar n tn Femara is also approved for the extended adjuvant treatment of early stage breast cancer in postmenopausal women who are within three months of completion of five years of tamoxifen therapy. In the adjuvant setting, commonly reported side effects are generally mild to moderate. Side effects that are comparable between Femara and tamoxifen include night sweats, weight gain, nausea and tiredness. Side effects seen more often with tamoxifen versus Femara were hot flashes and vaginal bleeding.
284773 tn?1207757759 This is also used to treat breast cancer and to induce ovulation in fertility patients instead of clomid. I read many scientific articles regarding femara before I decided to try it. It does work and worked for me on the first cycle. I know others who it also worked for. If you are looking for an alternative to clomid it is something you may want to investigate bfore moving on to injectibles. It works in a different way than clomid and therefore may work even if clomid did not.
Avatar f tn I am a stage 2 breast cancer survivor, turning 63 this month. I am also coming up on my 5 year window April 5th. I suffer from bone/joint and muscle pain from taking Letrozole and also sleep Issues. I come off the drug in December but I asked my doctor if I could come Off earlier. They suggested I go off for a week then resume and see how I feel. Are there withdrawl symptoms? Right now I am experiencing pain, hot flashes and some anxiety.
Avatar f tn Skin puckering in the breast region is seen due to shortening of the ligaments in the underlying breast tissue. This is usually associated with breast cancer changes, but that is not the rule. Let us know if you have any other doubts and post us about how you are doing. Regards.
Avatar f tn My doc prescribed me the same medicine to get pregnant and when I read the leaflet of the drug it seemed to be a medicine used for patients with breast cancer. I m really not sure why i am put on this drug, but i'll have to find out. By the way, whats ur dose and when are u supposed to have it. my doc told me to start it on the 2nd day of my period and have it for 5days.What abt u?
1190279 tn?1324936257 Hi! Doctors will prescribe either clomid or letrozole to assist with ovulation. There's two main differences: it doesn't have anti-estrogenic side effects like clomid; and although studies have proven letrozole is an effective fertility drug it hasn't been approved by the FDA yet for fertility use, thus isn't covered by insurance (beware it's very expensive). Letrozole was developed to treat estrogen-sensitive breast cancers.
1319297 tn?1274794630 t I had a mass (precancerous) in my breast in 2006 so no birth control for me ever again! Birth control is really high in estrogen so if you are high risk for breast cancer it significantly increases that risk. Apparently so does clomid my doctor didn't tell me that, I found out after 5 rounds of clomid and two more doctor changes, I was on bc before 2006 and I agree it made me very crazy. hopefully your cramps are a good sign.
Avatar f tn The most common type of breast cancer begins in the breast ducts (ductal carcinoma). Some breast cancers contain both lobular and ductal cancer cells. Invasive lobular carcinoma typically doesn't form a lump, as most women expect with breast cancer. Instead, invasive lobular carcinoma more often causes a thickening of the tissue or fullness in one part of the breast. At its earliest stages, invasive lobular carcinoma may cause no signs and symptoms.
Avatar f tn Hey girl, just spotted your post up here. Yeah, I had really bad hot flashes from the clomid so they put me on femara (primarily used to treat breast cancer, apparantly it either blocks estrogen or tricks your body into thinking it doesn't have enough and thus produces more or something to this effect). For the first IUI with the clomid I had two follicles emerge and then they gave me a trigger shot of Ovidrel.
Avatar n tn I tried clomid as well a couple of years ago, with very similar side effects as you describe. The fertility specialist I am seeing now put me on Letrozole. Letrozole is actually a drug used for women with breast cancer. One of the 'side effects' is that it stimulates ovulation. Of course the dose you take for fertility purposes is much lower compared to taking it for breast cancer. I did a little research on my own and found that Letrozole is actually much safer than clomid.
Avatar n tn I finally broke down after 26 mo of TTC, 8 clomid cycles, 2 IUIs and trigger shots and went to the RE for advice. After AF shows in 2 weeks or so - we will start on letrozole with CD3 blood work and U/S and then do another IUI. If that is unsuccessful - we will do IVF. Has anyone done letrozole vs clomid? side affects? BFPs?
Avatar f tn She is always very tired and has pain in lower left under breast bone area. Is that the liver. Does this sound like it is progressing to her liver or pancreas. Her shortness of breath is extreme.
Avatar n tn It is also approved for the extended adjuvant treatment of early stage breast cancer in postmenopausal women who are within three months of completion of five years of tamoxifen therapy. Side effects that are comparable between Femara and tamoxifen include night sweats, weight gain, nausea and tiredness. Side effects seen more often with tamoxifen versus Femara were hot flashes and vaginal bleeding. The benefits of FEMARA in clinical trials are based on 24 months of treatment.
Avatar n tn Many studies have shown that there is sufficient evidence to support that Arimidex or other similar drugs, reduce significantly the risk of recurrence as well as cancer in the opposite breast, especially if you had an aggressive type of breast cancer.Unfortunately, this medication which is a "necessary evil", does cause a lot of side effects, but the benefits must always be weighed against the possible risks.
