Avatar n tn My BG at 4AM was always excellent - somewhere between 80 - 130, but when I did a finger stick at 8AM right before taking my Lantus, it was anywhere from 200 - 300. No food in between - just this huge jump. Keeping good records showed me that I got 18-20 hours of coverage At Most from the Lantus, and when I hit that blank spot between 4 and 8 AM, there was just nothing left. I ended up splitting the Lantus to a 2/3 dose in the AM, and 1/3 in the evening.
Avatar n tn Hi jchitty, There is actually a really simpe reason to why Lantus stings when coming into contact with the body. The reason lies back to the pH value of the Lantus and the pH value of your body. Values of pH simply describe how acidic or how basic a solution is, the closer to 1 the solution is more acidic and the closer to 14 the solution is, the more basic.
Avatar n tn MY DOCTOR PRESCRIBED LANTUS INSULIN TO REPLACE THE HUMULIN L INSULIN THAT I HAD TAKEN FOR SEVERAL YEARS. I HAVE NOTICED THAT WHEN I TAKE THE LANTUS INSULIN PRESCRIBED DOSAGE(S) THAT APPROXIMATELY 15-30 MINUTES LATER I START TO SWEAT PROFUSELY. IS THIS A NORMAL REACTION TO THE LANTUS INSULIN? I VOICED MY CONCERNS TO MY DOCTOR AND HE HAD NO COMMENT. I AM ALSO TAKING SEVERAL DOSES OF HUMULIN R AND HAVE GAINED WEIGHT SINCE I STARTED TAKING THE LANTUS. PLEASE ADVISE. THANK YOU.
Avatar n tn I am not a phycan, but i would highly suggest that you dcusss this change with your endocronolgist as you might have to do this over several days as lantus is a 24 hr insurlin. The other is that lantus really doies not have a peak so it should not effect your luch time injuection.
Avatar f tn I know a line in the sand is needed for a screening test but that 1 point means that I have to be NPO at midnight on a 24 hour in house call shift. After 18 hours on my feet I really need food, nuts, gum to stay awake and running for the rest 6 -8 hours left in that 24. Yes I know ppl have it worse and I have worked longer then that with no naps too. It just that I was able to eat though. I wish I wasn't feeling so whiny.
Avatar m tn Diabetes is a disease where the body does not proses carbohydrates properly resulting in high blood sugar (BG). lantus is a background insulin, lasts about 24 hours. lantus just keeps you idling along. When you eat carbs it raises BG as your body digests the food. so you need insulin to lower your BG the same way that food raises BG. When you eat or when your BG is too high you need to take insulin that is faster acting than Lantus.
Avatar f tn Page 1 of 269 for: I'm taking 32-40 units of lantus a day. My A1C is 6.7. Why would I be given a pill instead of short acting insulin if the lantus has proven to work so well? ive tried numerous pills for diabetes over the past 20 years. Efficacy never enough- so we tried lantus.
Avatar n tn this is for 8 hours of sleep.....dont take it with humalog....humalog is only for when you eat and lantus only when you sleep....You guys have got some bad information and I would be afraid if I had your guy's doctors.... take it before you sleep ...just 25 units...
Avatar f tn 7 and give myself 8 units of lantus my reading is very high in the morning 13.8 or more now when is lantus then suppose to kick in . my mealtime insulien is 2 to 3 units at mealtime, Surely I have to give myself more lantus at night maybe 12 units.
Avatar n tn This is his fourth day on Lantus. He is doing fine but I am having problems trusting the Lantus - when his b/s drops below 100, I want to give him a can of apple juice, and of course that causes a moderate high. Also, he is not interested in stopping to eat as many snacks and meals because he does not have to 'feed' the NPH. Are these common problems in families starting on Lantus? It's as if my son and I are not making the most of this honeymoon period of a good insulin.
Avatar n tn When you were taking your Lantus at night, I noticed you mentioned you would carb load late at night to try to prevent the lows. Did you include adequate protein/fat with your carbs? These items reduce the rate at which carbs are metabolized, and might serve to mitigate the lows you were experiencing.
Avatar n tn Lantus is very slow-acting and really rarely causes severe hypoglycemia, in my experience, for warning symptoms occur long before it gets severe. However, if the warning symptoms are not listened to, I have personally noticed that the hypoglycemia that eventually happens makes me feel worse than some of the quick-acting insulins do.
Avatar n tn The expiration date is really important, for near the end of the month, some of us find that it no longer crystallizes properly. Some people notice that when the Lantus bottle is about one month old, it doesn't work well. But if you just started the bottle, this is probably not the problem. In my case, it takes a bit less Lantus than it did NPH when I was on it. It sounds as if you do need to increase your dosage...
915277 tn?1252573113 Anyone out there on Lantus, and have you heard about this and will you stop using Lantus due to this news?? What bothers me about this news is that the study seems a bit shaky...but, I also feel, where there is smoke, can fire be far behind?? I, myself, am thinking of changing to Levemir, at least until the experts decide what to do. Only because, I have enough health problems, if I can save myself some anguish, I think I will...What's your take on this issue??
Avatar n tn My daughter is currently on the insulin pump and only goes on Lantus/Humalog when her pump is malfunctioning. Thankfully (for us), this hasn't happened in so long that I cannot remember what the formula is to calculate the lantus. I do remember that prior to going on the pump, her endocrinologist switched her lantus shot from AM to PM as her morning bg's were higher than they wanted them.
Avatar n tn I am on lantus and the Novolog pen. I know when I first started lantus I got very anxious and before I had to take it, just in a dead panic. I can not fully answer your question, but I need your help. Can you ask your daughter if her lantus burns, itches, and/or does the area she injects it (arm, leg, stomach) feel heavy or like a big knot is under it?
Avatar f tn Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); changes in vision; chills; confusion; dizziness; drowsiness; fainting; fast heartbeat; fast, shallow breathing; headache; hoarseness; increased hunger, thirst, or urination; loss of consciousness; nervousness; seizures; slurred speech; stomach pain; sweating; sweet or fruity breath odor; swelling of the arms or legs; tremor; weakness.
1353681 tn?1387083733 The other thing I liked about the switch was being able to use a flex pen instead of a vial. Not sure if Lantus comes in pens now, but that was a big benefit when I switched. No more syringes, just flexpen needles for everything.
Avatar n tn I never really experienced this, but when I was switched to Lantus my Endo actually told me that there was a possibility of weight gain.
Avatar n tn It does take a while to figure out the right dosage for you when you begin any new routine. Ultimately, the Lantus should be able to give you better control and more lifestyle flexibility. I'm assuming that you take regualr insulin at mealtimes in conjunction with the Lantus. Of course, you would have to discuss this with your doctor.
Avatar n tn Try to take your Lantus in the morning and it will wane out at night as you sleep. That is what a lot of other Lantus users do when this happens to them and it has worked. Let us know how it works for you.
Avatar m tn as I never heard of these problems with Lantus. Lantus is a 24 hour basal insulin that starts to work in an hour after injected and lasts most of the day without peaking. Also, I have never heard of a Lantus pen but have a call into our local rep to ask. My teenage son has Type 1 diabetes and there is never a dull moment with diabetes, is there.
Avatar n tn I now inject 8 units of Lantus when I get up in the morning, and 8 units of NPH before going to bed at night. It peaks when I have the greatest need for basal insulin - from after midnite to before lunch the next day. This regimen keeps things on a pretty even keel. Lantus is good in that its action is reliable and consistent. But you need to experiment with different regimen variations to find the one that works best for you.
Avatar n tn I did however have an incident recently that took me to the ER. When I injected the Lantus into my ab, I was immediately able to taste it. I went to bed and woke up about an hour later with a blood sugar of 36. My daughter panicked and called 911. I was told in the ER that I had a common insulin reaction. It wasn't until the next day when I saw my family doctor that I found out that I did indeed hit a vein.
Avatar n tn When I started using 2u Lantus in morning, 2 weeks ago, I'd go low in the late afternoon/early evening, and then my morning sugars would be elevated ... 140s, 150s. So I split the dose: I'm now using 1.5u Lantus AM & 1u Lantus PM. It definitely works better than 2u QD, and I've checked the middle of the night - not a problem. The drug sheet for Lantus doesn't mention BID dosing, but my internet articles do. What are your thoughts, and is Levemir better for BID dosing?
Avatar n tn My A1c average over the past year is about 5.2. My average blood sugar is 110. When I first started using the Lantus I was getting several low blood sugars during the day (probably still honeymooning) but now I only get maybe 1. I do have the dawn phenomenon occationally where my pre breakfast blood sugar is actually higher than my post dinner sugar the night before. Other than that, everything is very predictable. So far, so good.
Avatar n tn The high levels at night are probably happening because the evening Lantus is not truly lasting 24 hours. See if this makes sense to you... Lantus is marketed as a 24-hour insulin, but it doesn't work full force for exactly 24 hours and then -- poof -- suddenly quit. If you read the paperwork in your Lantus box, you will read that it lasts anywhere between 20-24 hours.
