15695260 tn?1549593113 A systematic review2 of 25 previously published papers encompassing more than 125,000 individuals revealed that the overall prevalence of hip and knee OA is 10.2% in non-runners, 3.5% in “recreational” runners and 13.3% in “competitive” runners (defined as professional, elite or ex-elite athletes). In other words, running (for the grand majority of us) is NOT shown to be causally related to onset of knee OA. Let’s say that again.
Avatar n tn In addition, poor forefoot cushion and poor balance support of footwear can excentuate the pain. Try wearing runners whenever possible and avoid heels anytime.
Avatar f tn 51 yo F, diagnosed with Runners Knee, have been in pain, swollen and limping for 7 months. Dr. says to just keep coming back for cortisone, but it really does nothing. I can hardly walk, I am in pain, do I have to live like this? Is my doctor on the right track? Maybe I have meniscus tears??? It affects everything... walking, sleeping, working. Help!! Also, I have had xrays only. Shows no arthritis. In both knees, although one is worse than the other.
Avatar f tn The supplement is used to help the body make more cartilage, and to reduce pain; in the knee for example. There is controversy as to how helpful this supplement is in improving arthritic knee pain, but some patients do report benefit with long-term use.
Avatar f tn If the pain comes on bending the knee, then it could be due to Patellofemoral syndrome or runners knee. This happens due to mal-alignment of the knee cap on bending the knee (and hence any imaging study has to be taken with the knee bent), injury to the knee (you may have sustained while playing), flat feet, over tight or over lax muscles around the knee joint.
Avatar f tn I can move them around with my finger. It is right on my knee cap. I have had runners knee and had a few falls on my knee in my life. It does not hurt that bad unless I stand or walk for a while. Im assuming its loose bodies/cartilage but im not sure if you can have those by the surface of your skin above the kneecap? What do you think this is and should I see a doctor for treatment? I hope this makes sense!
Avatar f tn I have been running 3 miles a day fro 3x a week, until recently because i have been experiencing really aching pain in my knee and if i keep running it becomes really painful like i have torn something, and sometimes my knee gives way too, if i stop running and walk the pain wears off for a while, i have had an 6-8 week rest, but it still hurts when i try to bend my knee, it pulls really tight and hurts, haven`t tried running fully yet, sometimes the knee hurts really bad , it hurts in the back
Avatar m tn I am sophomore in high school and I am currently running track. I was recently been diagnosed with "runners knee" and was given a few strecthes and leg strengthening exercises to help with my knee problems. Well, after a solid two weeks of performing these exercises, my knee feels strong and well. But whenever i have to stretch and put my left knee into my buttox the entire knee feels an incredible amount of pain.
20866773 tn?1551913127 This article below mentions research, support groups, a specialist or two etc for people experiencing Runners Dystonia so it might be worth checking it out to see IF this could be what is going on with you. https://www.runnersworld.com/health-injuries/a20865203/runners-dystonia-mysterious-malady-causes-mind-and-muscle-to-lose-touch/ Hope this helps......
Avatar n tn Hi, I am recovering from a partial menisectomy of my lateral meniscus in my right knee, Although it went great and I am DELIGHTED to be back running again, I was recently informed that I lost 40-50 percent of my meniscus during surgery because it was so torn up. Does this mean that osteoarthritis is inevitable in my near future? I am only 16, and hope to be running as long as I can. :( Is it possible that osteoarthritis could end my pain-free life at age 30?
1603542 tn?1297734997 If you have Patella Femoral Syndrome you should have pain located around or under the knee cap. It is most common in runners. It is one of the most misdiagnosed running related injuries. Pain is often aggravated by bending because this causes the most motion of the knee cap over the femoral groove. I assume your physician agrees with your diagnosis. The treatment is what your physicians are telling you....
Avatar f tn He is a tri-athlete chiro focused on runners/athletes and just does some preventative deep massages and ART. My knee sometimes has a little feel but is pretty much in very good shape because of this. My mileage is between 30 and 35 miles a week and I have built up over 2 months. I run 4 days a week for training. I ran 5.5 miles yesterday and getting out of bed today, I didn't notice any feeling. If I twist my ankle around then I notice some tenderness - otherwise I can walk fine.
Avatar f tn Ever since there I have not been able to run. Since my brother came to visit, and we discussed his knee and back problems, I decided to heed his advice. I went out and purchased a pair of vibram shoes. I will never buy a pair of runners again. I have noticed HUGE improvement in my knee in a week alone. I am able to use the leg press with 110lb of weight and not worry about my knee. I highly highly suggest people research them, and I highly recommend them to anyone with knee and back pain.
Avatar f tn I would like to run/walk a 5k. Any runners out there? I need a training schedule and ideas of how long to train. I walk 4 miles every day and currently walk a 13 minute mile. I am looking at a 5k 4 weeks from now and 8 weeks. I would like to do both, but will register for the later one if I need more time to train. I would like to step it up to some type of running, even if my time is quite slow.
Avatar n tn I was not an avid runner, it was a new years resolution to start it, by the summer I found out i was pregnant and I didn't want to use it an an out excuse. So. I kept running. My doctor and runners forums advised watching my temp and heart rate and obviously how you are feeling. So that's what I did, I jogged vs ran. I continued up till 7 mths. My last hoorah was a half marathon!
Avatar n tn Well, the condom broke and we noticed before ejaculation, but it was definitely unprotected for a short while. Two days ago, he complained of a pain underneath his knee, which is exactly what happened to me in the initial stage (that, and a whole host of other unpleasant pains and aches). But, we are both runners and had just come back from the track. The problem is that I now have tingling and slight pains in my knees as well. I know it is common for sex to wake the virus...
378273 tn?1262097621 My doctor prescribed a beta blocker for me two years ago. Just before I was diagnosed with AFib, I had stopped running because of a knee problem. After laying off running for several months, I have been slowly getting back into it and find that the medication does not seem to impact my running, although it does lower my heart rate and my endurance is not what it was before the knee injury or AFib. I suspect that is because of conditioning more than anything.
Avatar n tn Hi, This could be tendinosis which may cause swelling or a hard knot of tissue (nodule) on the back of the leg. This may occur in runners and also is more common in athletes, especially in sports that involve jumping and in people who do a lot of walking. If it persists and other symptoms occur such as pain and swelling, have this evaluated further for proper management. A complete physical examination must be done to reach a diagnosis. Take care and regards.
Avatar m tn If the pain comes on bending the knee as in walking step or running downhill or down a flight of stairs, then it could be due to Patellofemoral syndrome or runners knee. This happens due to mal-alignment of the knee cap on bending the knee (and hence any imaging study has to be taken with the knee bent), injury to the knee (you may have sustained it in past), flat feet, over tight or over lax muscles around the knee joint. All these aspects will have to be investigated by your doctor.
Avatar f tn The long-term remedy for muscle-related pain in the shin is a change in the running style to eliminate the overstriding and heavy heel strike. The shin muscles can also be somewhat alleviated by footwear and choice of surface. Runners who strike heavily with the heel should look for shoes which provide ample rear foot cushioning. Such shoes may be referred to as "stability" or "motion control" shoes.
Avatar f tn The pain is 10/10 and I can only unlocking it by hanging my knee over my other leg while lying on my stomach relieving pressure on the outside of the knee. This all started beginning when I injured my knee sliding on wet grass my cleat got stuck and twisted my ankle. At first the locking would occur multiple times a week and was extreme. Mri’s including a contrast were clean. I no longer deal with the problem except for the fact I cannot preform the exact slide that injured it.
Avatar f tn I went to physio blah blah blah then I had to get a second surgery to remove a calcium build up and remove scar tissue to help my knee bend. My surgeon said I will always have a bad knee but i didn't think it'd get this bad. It just aches and aches and it clicks when I go up stairs. And I can't bend it all the way. When it's bent for so long I can't straighten and vise versa.
Avatar m tn This happens due to mal-alignment of the knee cap on bending the knee (and hence any imaging study has to be taken with the knee bent), injury to the knee (you may have sustained it in past), flat feet, over tight or over lax muscles around the knee joint. All these aspects will have to be investigated by your doctor. Other possibilities are bursitis (inflammation of fluid filled sac over joints), tendonitis (inflammation of cords joining muscles to bones) or due to weakness of patellar bone.

Avatar m tn t getting any better. The first orthorpedic surgeon I went to said it was runners knee and rest and PT should take care of it. I started PT but the knee kept getting worse, to the point where I could not even bend it. I saw a second orthopedic surgeon that sent me for an MRI. The MRI showed no physical damage, but I was still in extreme pain and unable to bend my knee. At this point I started having shoulder issues as well in both shoulders.
Avatar f tn I will be doing a lot of traveling this summer, lots of airports; does an orthopaedic boot support both knee and ankle? I use Voltaren gel and take Tramadol twice a day.
