16888441 tn?1452155657 s usually a good practice to consult with at least 2-3 top doctors before undergoing a knee replacement surgery. Knee replacement can be an excellent option in many cases, but there are also some contra-indications where a knee replacement should not be the first choice. For instance, if a person is young and below 50 years of age, knee replacement can be delayed because the life of implants typically lasts between 15-20 years. Is the person too over-weight?
Avatar m tn 2/4/09 Dear Dr. Gross: I damaged both of my knees playing football more than 40 years ago. I damaged the meniscus on the inside of both knees from being tackled many times. I have been able to get by all of these years but now the jig is up. About 15 years ago, a sports orthopedist gave me some really serious knee braces and said they would stabilize my loose knees. They controlled the pain.
Avatar n tn I had a patellectomy about 30 years ago. Now I have arthritis on the knee and bone on bone. My doctor says because of the loss of the patella I cannot have a knee replacement. The arthritis is on the lateral/inside. Is this true?
Avatar f tn My mother is still experiencing tightness of the knee that has been surgically replaced 2 years ago. Somebody said that she has a baker's cyst. Tell me what you know about this.
Avatar n tn Pain in the knee after total knee replacement can occur due to knee infection or loosening, resurfaced patella, with effusion in the joint occuring due to worn out polyethylene components, due to damage to the vessels and nerves around the knee etc. In case of infection antibiotics would help. In case of worn out polyethylene components may be reoperation could be considered. Also you mentioned that a cyst is present in the knee area, this could have been the cause of pain in the knee.
Avatar m tn I too had a THR about five years ago. Soon after, I began having knee pain. Xrays and cortisone injections had no effect. I then started having groin pain. At that time my orthopedic surgeon did various tests and determined there was no infection. Under floroscopy, he manipulated the hip and injected a steroid which lasted about 1 1/2 years. The pain in my hip has worsened and now the groin pain and thigh pain has begun again.
Avatar f tn I had been diagnosed with Osteoarthritis in the left knee and beginning in the right knee four years ago. I was told that I was bone on bone in the left knee. Since I was only 50 years old the doctor said that I was too young for surgery. Four years later, 1 less thyroid, additional weight, I have been told I am too fat and I need to get my BMI down before they would consider.
Avatar f tn My grandmother had a double knee replacement quite a few years ago, when her knees were so bad that she couldn't get around. It gave her a great new lease on life and she was able to be active again for more than 10 years, up until a couple of years before she died when she was in her mid 90s. You've got to have it done for the right reasons and you have to be very compliant with the rehab.
Avatar f tn She had stopped excersizing due to a bad knee and was scheduled in for a knee replacement when she got, what she thought, was the flu. They went ahead and had the knee replacement done, but she never really managed to do a lot of rehabilitation of the knee because she had this persisent flu. The flu was paired with a loss of touch and the feeling of numbness in her left side of her face. This sensation of numbness never disappeared and she still has this to this day.
Avatar m tn The anatomy of knee or knee joint configuration would have changed after the knee fusion surgery to do any sort of surgery after that. Yes I think an orthopedic surgeon experienced in knee replacement after knee fusion could possibly with difficulty could have done it. Keep me informed if you have any queries. Bye.
Avatar m tn However, if your quality of life is poor and all other options have been exhausted. Knee replacement can be extremely effective. Whether, total knee, partial knee, or patellafemoral replacement is best can only be determined ny examining you and reviewing your xrays.

2194148 tn?1397323475 t isolate the infection, so finally, after 4 more surgeries, they did a biopsy and found that the bacteria that was causing my knee infection is ONLY SUPPOSED TO LIVE IN MY STOMACH! Even the doctor that performed the biopsy was confused. Anyway, it left my knee is horrible shape and so loose I could barely walk, so in 2015, I had a second replacement. This one is much larger and supposedly "sturdier" than the last one.
647391 tn?1275016633 I am 50 years old and set to have knee replacement surgery in a month. This is because of damage to the knee and missing cartilage. What is your thoughts as to someone my age having knee replacement surgery. Also, what is the quickest recovery you have seen for someone with knee replacement surgery?
Avatar n tn my wife had her knee fusion of 38 years replaced with a total knee by Dr Finn out of Chicago. She has worked very hard to rehab the quad muscles which had not been used and now has 90 degrees of bend. Dr Finn is the guy to use.
Avatar f tn I was told by one position that I could not have a knee replacement unless they did a Fulkerson because my knee was not tracking properly. I now assume he was referring to a partial knee replacement. As I've been referred to a position for total knee replacement because the Fulkerson did not completely resolve my pain and improve my mobility.
Avatar n tn I had a left knee total replacement two years ago this coming Nov. Dec. the same year as replacement they manipulated the knee.I am in constant pain when I am sitting and go to stand I want to cry . Have had ex-rays but drs. say knee is fine. The lower part of my leg is a little red while the section right below the knee is white. Drs. say nothing is wrong , everything looks good, feel like I am crazy -they give me pain pills which don't really help.
Avatar f tn My knee replacement is almost 16 years old. It is now making a loud popping/grinding sound. My surgeon moved out of state years ago. Do you think I'm going to need my knee prosthesis replaced? I do have swelling and pain after walking and when I sleep at night.
Avatar f tn Improvements in implant design and surgical technique have produced greater prostheses longevity and has led to total knee replacement in younger patients. Many surgeons agree that if your symptoms have become a significant limit on your life and lifestyle, and all else has failed, then total knee replacement surgery is warranted in the younger patient.
Avatar f tn This would be a difficult question to answer without the relevant clinical details. A knee replacement is not preferred in young patients as the life of a knee replacement around 10-20 years (the newer devices last longer than the older ones). Though knee replacements are usually successful and help in regaining movements around the joint conservative management is preferred due to the risk associated with the replacement surgery and a possible re-replacement surgery.
