I damaged both of my knees playing football more than 40 years ago. I damaged the meniscus on the inside of both knees from being tackled many times.
I have been able to get by all of these years but now the jig is up. About 15 years ago, a sports orthopedist gave me some really serious knee braces and said they would stabilize my loose knees. They controlled the pain.
Pain in the knee after total knee replacement can occur due to knee infection or loosening, resurfaced patella, with effusion in the joint occuring due to worn out polyethylene components, due to damage to the vessels and nerves around the knee etc.
In case of infection antibiotics would help. In case of worn out polyethylene components may be reoperation could be considered.
Also you mentioned that a cyst is present in the knee area, this could have been the cause of pain in the knee.
I too had a THR about five years ago. Soon after, I began having knee pain. Xrays and cortisone injections had no effect. I then started having groin pain. At that time my orthopedic surgeon did various tests and determined there was no infection. Under floroscopy, he manipulated the hip and injected a steroid which lasted about 1 1/2 years. The pain in my hip has worsened and now the groin pain and thigh pain has begun again.
I had been diagnosed with Osteoarthritis in the left knee and beginning in the right knee four years ago. I was told that I was bone on bone in the left knee. Since I was only 50 years old the doctor said that I was too young for surgery. Four years later, 1 less thyroid, additional weight, I have been told I am too fat and I need to get my BMI down before they would consider.
My grandmother had a double knee replacement quite a few years ago, when her knees were so bad that she couldn't get around. It gave her a great new lease on life and she was able to be active again for more than 10 years, up until a couple of years before she died when she was in her mid 90s.
You've got to have it done for the right reasons and you have to be very compliant with the rehab.
She had stopped excersizing due to a bad knee and was scheduled in for a knee replacement when she got, what she thought, was the flu. They went ahead and had the knee replacement done, but she never really managed to do a lot of rehabilitation of the knee because she had this persisent flu. The flu was paired with a loss of touch and the feeling of numbness in her left side of her face. This sensation of numbness never disappeared and she still has this to this day.
The anatomy of knee or knee joint configuration would have changed after the knee fusion surgery to do any sort of surgery after that. Yes I think an orthopedic surgeon experienced in knee replacement after knee fusion could possibly with difficulty could have done it.

However, if your quality of life is poor and all other options have been exhausted. Knee replacement can be extremely effective. Whether, total knee, partial knee, or patellafemoral replacement is best can only be determined ny examining you and reviewing your xrays.

plus I have a hubby dealing with back pain and my mom who is recovering from knee replacement, so I have a million things I've been focusing on lately...it just feels like there's not enough time to get anything done!! I'm 34 weeks, but Luke the previous comment I hear it goes quick them eventually feels like time stops when you're so close to the end.
I was told by one position that I could not have a knee replacement unless they did a Fulkerson because my knee was not tracking properly. I now assume he was referring to a partial knee replacement. As I've been referred to a position for total knee replacement because the Fulkerson did not completely resolve my pain and improve my mobility.

Improvements in implant design and surgical technique have produced greater prostheses longevity and has led to total knee replacement in younger patients. Many surgeons agree that if your symptoms have become a significant limit on your life and lifestyle, and all else has failed, then total knee replacement surgery is warranted in the younger patient.
This would be a difficult question to answer without the relevant clinical details. A knee replacement is not preferred in young patients as the life of a knee replacement around 10-20 years (the newer devices last longer than the older ones). Though knee replacements are usually successful and help in regaining movements around the joint conservative management is preferred due to the risk associated with the replacement surgery and a possible re-replacement surgery.
