Common Questions and Answers about Knee replacement exercises

Avatar m tn On September 7/12 I received a total knee replacement of my left knee. I suffer from severe osteoarthrits and am only 59 years of age. I previously had shoulder replacements in 2008 and 2010 respectively. My right knee is scheduled for replacement on March 25th of this year. My initial recovery from the left knee replacement was excellent. I was walking without a cane within 7 days, and no longer needed any medication stronger than ibupuprofen.
Avatar n tn I'm a 66 yr old female, normal weight. Had a total knee replacement six months ago because of a torn ACL, torn meniscus and arthritic knee. The pain is now worse than before I had the replacement surgery. My knee is always swollen, stiff and hot to touch since surgery. I have taken Celebrex that helped the pain but had to stop because my kidney function BU/CU ratio is now elevated. I cannot take other NSAID's because they elevate my blood pressure.

Avatar m tn on investigating they found that my femor and knee cap was in a bad way and worn and in time i will need a knee cap replacement, however thankfully not at the present time. Iam a fit person who teaches amrtial arts. My problem is that it has been weeks since my operation but the knee is still badly swollen and sore and i am still struggling to straighten it and bend it behonf 40 degrees..
Avatar f tn It has been two years since I have had a total left knee replacement . I still have stiffness in my knee and I can not bend it more than a 90 degree angle. I swim, walk, take yoga classes & constantly try to stretch it -- but nothing happens. Is there anything I can do for this ?
Avatar f tn My husband had knee replacement surgery 7 weeks ago. Now he is suffering with swelling of the calf, ankle and foot on the same leg as the replacement. He is exercising, walking, biking on stationery bike and doing the exercises that PT told him to do. He is able to bend 126 degrees and walks very well without any aid. He is doing stairs as well. He ices it and elevates the leg periodically throughout the day. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? It is extremely frustrating.
Avatar f tn for exercises that may help. Hope it gets better soon!
Avatar f tn I heard from a lady at work that when you get a staph infection in a knee replacement, or any replaced joint, that you will always have staph dorment in it, and an injury or even stress can cause it to flair up again...does anyone know if this is true? I can't seem to get a straight answer from my doctor - I don't know why.
Avatar m tn My mother had Knee Replacement Surgery in one knee a little over two years ago, due to osteoarthritis. However, she does still have considerable amount of pain. She "bandages" her knees up every morning. She did all of the required exercises after the surgery (perhaps too much). Her range of motion is OK, but less than it was before surgery. She was able to sit cross-legged before the surgery for a little while, but cannot now.
Avatar f tn Five weeks is not enough to fully recover from a knee replacement. It takes months of diligent, daily exercises to regain full use of the knee. If you quit too soon, things can go backward pretty quickly, as you're finding out. Insist on getting back to see a therapist, or find a way to continue to do the PT on your own, at least twice a day. Keep at it even if it hurts - knees take a long time for the complex structures to heal. Get on your feet and stay as active as possible.

1573930 tn?1295917640 Have you done any physical therapy?? I am sure your doctor ordered physical therapy for your knee replacement. You may need to be treated for RSD...some doctors don't know anything about it. Please look up RSD symtoms and see if anything resonates with you. Good luck.
Avatar m tn The arthritis had set in to my left hip, but the pain was spread to my left knee?? doc said the hip replacement would more than likely take care of the knee pain. At first (in the second week after) the pain wasn't so bad in the knee, but the pain came back shortly after that and isn't getting better. I was referred to a Pain management clinic here in Ohio and was prescribe (perkocet) physical therapy.
Avatar n tn I recently learned that during my right knee replacement, the surgeon severed a nerve in the back of my knee near the right side. After 4 years of pain, drugs and almost loosing my job, I saw a new pain doctor who sent me for a 3D sonogram which is how I discovered this. Can this nerve be repaired?
Avatar f tn I had total knee replacement in April of 2007 and continue to have a nagging pain in the knee area as well as it stays slightly swollen all the time. The pain is a burning and stinging sensation and is made worse when I try to walk any length of time. Therefore, I don't get much exercise. The pain subsides with rest at night but when arisinig in the morning it's back and still swollen. Due to the swelling the knee doesn't bend as far as it should.
614557 tn?1243708351 t like to do a total knee replacement until you are in your 50s. Reason being that currently a new knee has a lifespan of about 15 years (if you are lucky), They hope that if they can make you wait that you will be less active, and probably won't live long enough to require a second or third go around on the surgery, thus costing them a bunch more money. Also the second synthetic knee that they put in tends to be more problematic than the first one..
Avatar f tn My knee was very damaged and I had many surgeries prior to total knee replacement had Donated bone placed in the knee many years before this procedure. I am in Ted hose and have been doing my exercises they did a nerve block during surgery and I can tell that helped me a lot it hurts under my knee on the right side of knee and my thigh hurts very bad. Have a lot of fluid on top of knee not red or leaking I have a lot of heat coming from the knee and ice helps a lot.
Avatar f tn I had a full knee replacement 8 weeks ago. I have been experiencing severe muscle pain behind my knee, in my calf and ankle. This happens after exercise and when I am at rest. I am doing the exercises given to me by the hospital. I have tried ice, ibuleve gel and medication but there seems to be no improvement.
Avatar m tn i had my knee replacement on the 13th of March 2015. The question I have is did all of you swell up from your hip to your big toe? The pain is like i have never felt before. My ankle is all bruised on both sides and the back and outside of my thigh all the way into my calf if a deep colored bruise along with about six inches around my knee. The doctor said this is normal so I thought I would ask people who have had this done already.
Avatar m tn My range of motion is only 80 and it is 8 weeks since my knee replacement. Been in a rehab hospital, home physical therapy and now outpatient physical therapy 3 times a week. I have pain and stiffness every day. Taking Advill and Tylenol since my prescripton finished and doctor won't renew it. Every day I do my exercises and spend time on a recumbent bike. Anyone have this problem?
Avatar m tn You can have arthritis at young age and when the joint cartilage is lost then you would need total knee replacement. Take care!
Avatar m tn Hi, I'm 45 years old and have had a knee arthroscopy on my left knee due to a complex radial tear at the body of the medial meniscus extending into the peripheral zone. Further radial tearing was identified at the posterior horn centrally. Plus a low grade chondral irregularity at the lateral weight bearing surface of the medial femoral condyle, ( MRI Scan Report).
