Avatar f tn A recent study showed that the incidence of patella problems was equal in both groups of patients post surgery. The group who had not had their patella replaced originally, did have a higher incidence of second surgery, but this may have been because there was something obvious left to do. Interestingly, the group who had second surgery did no better than those who did not. Your problem is not a result of the patella surface, but of the patella alignment.
Avatar m tn The various other causes of knee locking are torn medial meniscus, mis-aligned knee cap, osteoarthritis, knee arthritis, torn lateral meniscus, osteochondritis dissecans, recurrent patella dislocation, chondromalacia patella, knee alignment problem, knee fragment or knee cartilage disorder. Since pain intensified after a fall, maybe she has injured a ligament. Please discuss with her doctor. It may be a good idea to do a MRI, if that is possible. Take care!
Avatar f tn Pain can cause other problems in the body. I had a knee replacement 8 years ago and there is literally no pain now. If you do get the surgery, you may want to order a cooler, which lets you wrap a flap around your knee. The cooler then will recycle iced water through it and help with the swelling and healing. They are available online. If you decide to get one, check Amazon.com first.
1308443 tn?1302693321 I'm a 17 year old girl and have had bilateral knee problems for 3.5 years and despite lots of doctors visits I still have no diagnosis. I have learned that I overpronate and I'm very flat footed. MRIs and blood work is normal. This weekend my right knee began to have pain at the top of my knee cap. It feels like it is stuck on the pop. I can still get my knee to pop but it still feels like it is stuck on another pop.

Avatar n tn It includes the articulation between the tibia and femur (leg and thigh) and the patella (knee cap) and femur. The most common knee problems in running relate to what is called the "patellofemoral complex". This consists of the quadriceps, knee cap and patellar tendon. What is now called patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) has also been called runner's knee, anterior knee pain, or chondromalacia of the patella.
Avatar n tn Grinding / grating sensation upon flexing the knee. Aching pain at and below the patella. Difficulty straightening the knee. Pain is most servere when putting weight or pressure on it. Pain can be felt when climbing up the stairs, jumping, running and standing for prolonged periods. In addition, pain can be felt behind the knee cap. I've had blows to the front and side of the knees before when playing soccer. The Orthopaedic diagnosed me with having Patella Tendonosis.
Avatar f tn Anything from a torn miniscus to a damaged patella. I fell on my right knee and winded up having a partial and then a total replacement. I would get in to see an orthopedic doctor and let them check your knee out. They know what to look for and what to do with it. The longer you wait the harder it is on you. Good luck.
Avatar n tn Improper seat position is a common cause of patella problems. Be sure that your far leg is almost fully extended, about 5 degrees bent at the knee. Icing after riding can also be helpful. In addition, the use of a patella stabilizing brace for riding may be useful. If the pain persists, see an orthopedist.
Avatar n tn Hey guys, my name's Josh, i'm a 22 year old student from the UK. Over the past 12 months i've been experiencing chronic leg pain, which the doctors still have no idea what it is, what's causing it/how to treat it etc. It's a bit of a long list of how it all came about/developed, but i'll try and sum it up as clearly and chronologically as I can.
701160 tn?1228413523 IT feels like the same type of pain from before, but for some reason most of the swelling leans towards the left side of my knee cap. I am also wondering would a patella support strap/brace be good for this injury?
Avatar f tn His patella is completely dislocated to the outside of the knee. His patella would originally go out of place when he sat. I was able to move it in and out of position with no pain to him. When he begain having pain and ended up using a wheelchair more than walking it became completely dislocated. At this point it can no longer be moved back into place.

Avatar m tn He also suggested waiting as long as possible for knee replacement so hopefully the brace helps- he did say there were more specialized Patella support braces available also- Can you recommend any if this one seems to help the situation???
Avatar m tn I am a cheerleader and I have patella femoral syndrome and a bad case on tendonitis. After every competition and practice my knee swells up and turns purple. I have gotten x rays and nothing is wrong and i have seen 2 orthopedics. They said its one of the worst cases they have ever seen. I was just wondering if if I didn't take anytime off to rest my knee what's the worst possible thing that could happen?
4817742 tn?1359564366 The pain in knee could be due to patella chondromalacia or injury and subsequent softening of patella. It can cause fissures too. The treatment is pretty controversial. However, you need to give rest to the joint for extended period of time and use anti-inflammatory pain medication. Application of ice pack also reduces inflammation and keeping the leg elevated keeps the pressure off the knee.
Avatar m tn Anyone who responds to this, do you think i will need get surgery on the other knee. And last question. Is PFS common in black people and can PFS result in a patella tendon rapture.
Avatar n tn MRI---all ligaments etc...are good. Had no problems with my knee until this fall in early January. I fell directly on my knee, tore pants and the skin off my knee. About 8 hours after the fall I went to do a complete squat (to the floor) and it took my breath away. I have difficulty kneeling on it and squatting and getting back up. Bending knee to put pants on is not comfortable.

Avatar m tn As my employer will only accept me back with permanent limitations. That is my dilemma! I am a fit 48 year old male. I never had any knee problems before the injuries. Especially with my work situation! I see my doctor again next week. Any advice is greatly accepted!
Avatar n tn I had arthroscopic surgery on my left knee almost 3 months ago. The medial and lateral meniscus were repaired along with scraping under patella for some arthritis. The medial was much more damaged than the lateral. Surgery seemed to go well. No pain at all. After some weeks with therapy the knee still feels unstable laterally. Front to back movement was very good, Pain developed on medial side of knee and the patella tendon when walking.
Avatar n tn Now I have arthritis on the knee and bone on bone. My doctor says because of the loss of the patella I cannot have a knee replacement. The arthritis is on the lateral/inside. Is this true?
942127 tn?1276949209 Chondromalacia patella is abnormal softening of the cartilage of the under the kneecap (patella). Chondromalacia patella is the most common cause of chronic knee pain. The primary goal for treatment and rehabilitation of chondromalacia patella is to create a straighter pathway for the patella to follow during quadriceps (thigh muscles) contraction. So you can go for physcial therapy. Initial pain management for you involves avoiding motions which irritate the kneecap.
Avatar n tn i have recently had a left knee arthroscopy with medial plicectomy and patella chondroplasty. It wasn't explained to me properly what i'd had done as i was still drowsy. Can you explain what they've done and some effective rehab exercises?
Avatar m tn s baseball season and had no other problems and the knee appears sound. Recently he dove for a ball and his knee swelled up over the weekend. From what I can gather it sounds like a contusion to the same knee. Is this type of swelling unusual and to be expected? He doesn't where any type of brace at the advise of the surgeon. What advise can you provide?
Avatar m tn It is an active and dynamic stabiliser of the patella (knee cap). The VMO stabilizes the patella within the patella groove. It also controls the tracking of the patella when the knee is bent and straightened. It plays an important role in the function of our knee joint. Your question, "I'm afraid that I had torn my medial retiniculum , how could I know?
