Common Questions and Answers about Knee osteoarthritis and exercise

529224 tn?1400651819 I've had one knee replacement in 2011 - I'm 65 now. The other knee was about to be replaced in 2012 and an emergency came in and my OP was postponed.I took up hill walking, despite it hurt, aquafit twice a week and swimming lengths (not breaststroke!) - which my consultant had suggested before first knee OP, and my knee (despite being in a worse arthritic state than the first knee before OP!) improved - I don't have pain, or instability anymore!
1175033 tn?1492204828 It's very possible that your hip deformity is the source of your other aches and pains. It throws off your gait and your spinal alignment, causing pain and stress in other parts of your body. Ask for a referral to a pain management specialist. These lovely people are willing to try a wide variety of methods to help you with your pain, which your doctor may be unaware of or reluctant to try.
Avatar f tn Exercise can help reduce stiffness and pain, and it can also help you lose weight, which takes pressure off aching joints. Losing as few pounds can cut the risk of developing knee osteoarthritis by 50% for some women. Although OA typically affects the knees, your hips, hands, lower back, and neck may also be affected. Always ask your doctor before doing any exercise! Warming up with gentle stretching can help get your body ready for your workout.
Avatar n tn Still, these exercises, such as lifting and lowering the leg from the knee while sitting in a chair, are gentle and use your own body weight to create resistance, which makes them a perfect workout for those with arthritis. Again, work with a physical therapist or medical professional to choose the best exercises for your particular situation. An exercise routine that can be done anytime, anywhere, alone, or with a group? Walking might be a perfect match.
Avatar n tn OA is a degenerative disease and, at this time, there is nothing to stop it from advancing. The best thing you can do is maintain a proper weight and exercise but don't over use damaged joints.
1459410 tn?1285698605 I recently got an MRI after years of suffering and learned about disc displacement, one of them displaced all the time and it's torn. Pool exercise might help you some if they are joints that go underwater. And if you have knee arthritis, I saw on tv where I scientific study was done proving acupuncture can be a help.
1069378 tn?1255218732 , but my knee never healed and in fact the pain has spread to other parts of my knee and my knee swells very easily when I do anything (upright, sitting, sleeping). The MRI shows that my lateral meniscus is torn again and x-rays show I have osteoarthritis. One of the orthopedic surgeons I saw suggested trying Synvisc injections before resorting to surgery, especially since the surgery will involve removing the rest of my lateral meniscus which will in turn worsen the osteoarthritis.
Avatar n tn Ever since the active PT I've been having more hip pain as well as aches/cramps down my thigh and around my knee (which also has arthritis). Should I be worried about this? Is it normal? Needless to say I have stopped going to that PT tech.
1176578 tn?1263756689 I am in constant pain despite the pain medication. I have a great job and family, my husband is a tennis teaching pro and my kids and he are fit and slim. I feel I am missing out on so much because my pain and extreme fatigue keeps me sidelined.
Avatar m tn I've also started to notice some tenderness in my elbow joints when resting my elbows on a table, and my knee joints have been a bit stiff and sore after using my exercise bike. I notice the pain in my feet the most when I first get up in the morning, It's less noticable as the day goes on. The hand pain I notice throughout the day. I have always had an office job, so I'm surprised that my joints would have had enough wear and tear to cause osteoarthritis.
3060903 tn?1398568723 What are the symptoms of a flare-up? Osteoarthritis pain in knee, flare-up with person holding knee. Joint pain may characterize osteoarthritis flare-ups. Avatar n tn The issue of exercising while in afib, I think, depends on the type and severity of the symptoms experienced. Some people feel weak, tired and dizzy. So exercise is often not possible until normal rhythm is restored or meds (BBs) are taken to lower the heart rate. On the other hand, there are a lot of folks who don't experience any symptoms at all while in afib (some don't even notice they are having an episode).
483733 tn?1326802046 My father was disabled from osteoarthritis when I was a teenager and gave up on life. He just ate and sat in his chair watching TV. He is now morbidly obese and as a consequence greatly suffers even more due to the weight on his joints. I am determined to not let that happen to me and this diagnosis is spurring me to lose the weight and stay active. Do any of you have advice on best exercises for an arthritic body? I don't want to hurt my joints but will not sit still and stiffen up.

387767 tn?1345875627 Knee pain has many causes, including pathologic processes in the knee and disorders in distant locations with referral to the knee area. Can you tell me when this pain is more? Do you experience any grinding, locking, catching, or giving way of the knee? When did your pain begin, what were you doing at the time, and what were the initial symptoms?
Avatar f tn Try to understand that if she has osteoarthritis then the only cure is total knee replacement and all these avenues are for short term relief. Tell her to cut down her weight if she is overweight and start physical exercise in sitting and sleeping positions so that she will be ready for her future surgery which involves lots of physiotherapy. Take care!
Avatar n tn Do you have access to a gym? Or is this for at home exercises without any equipment?
Avatar m tn The outside of my left knee (the left side) clicks whenever I'm bearing weight on it and I bend it more than about 45 degrees. When I touch it, what feels like a bone just above and to the left of the kneecap pops out a little bit. My right knee (which is fine) does something similar but much more subtle and I can't feel it unless I'm actually touching it. I'm not really experiencing pain, but whenever a do a lot of exercise my left knee gets a bit sore or more sore than my right.
5289415 tn?1391260841 Is the numbness just in your knee? Do you experience a numb feeling or sensation down the side of the outer thigh as well? Like bigsissie says, it sounds that there is pinched nerve somewhere. Sometimes it is not in the actual joint itself, but can be referred from elswhere. The other problem than can cause the numbness is from inflammation of the joint due to arthritic conditions.
1378884 tn?1315509445 There are days when my knees are pain free ( little pain from initial injuries, osteoarthritis) and then there are days when the tendons around my knees become very tender to the touch and I loose the ability to walk with confidence, unsteady. Some times it affects one knee and not the other. Does normal arthritis behave this way? RA has been ruled out.
Avatar f tn Has anyone had any experience with having knee surgery to correct osteoarthritis? I am scheduled to have orthoscopic knee surgery on my right knee to correct problems I am having related to osteoarthritis. Does this type of surgery prevent osteoarthritis from returning? Is this surgery safe? What is recovery like after surgery? Any information anyone has regarding this topic will be greatly appreciated.
587778 tn?1261400718 A few minutes ago, I laid on my left side and proceeded to bend my right knee and the clicking and popping was very audible and painful. I know that swelling and pain accompanies osteoarthritis, but the doctor said that it was mild and that I can continue to exercise (Cycling). It does not matter if I am standing, sitting, walking, or lying down, I am in pain constantly for the last week. I am wondering if I have re-injured my knee or is this how mild osteoarthritis feels?
Avatar f tn The remaining normal cartilage manifests a reparative response. In the knee joint, osteophytes may cause painful extension and flexion. Usually these are seen with osteoarthritis so clinical features are joint pain, morning stiffness, joint buckling, limited range of motion, crepitus or pain with motion. A well charted exercise schedule, weight loss program, dietary restrictions, would help in reducing the strain on knee joints.
Avatar f tn Hello. Though physical therapy is useful in osteoarthritis, several trials have found that physical therapy is only mildly or moderately useful. Different individuals respond differently to physical therapy. There are certain exercises, which should be learnt from a physical therapist. Following are some techniques, which I have mentioned here from the article "Role of physical therapy in management of knee osteoarthritis" by G. Kelley Fitzgerald and Carol Oatis.

Avatar m tn I agree that there are multiple causes of knee and back pain. I will offer what I have learned about knee and back pain. Degenerative diseases like Degenerative Disc Disease of the back and Degenerative Joint Disease can lead to arthritis. Arthritis is an inflamation and degeneration is a tearing down so to speak of parts of a joint, When the lining of the knee joint becomes inflamed it is sinovitis and this can become an arthritic joint..
Avatar n tn Many members of the medical community consider fibromyalgia a ‘non-disease’ because of a lack of abnormalities on physical examination, the absence of objective diagnostic tests makes it a difficult proposition. Exercise improves fitness and sleep and may reduce pain, we also advise you to give her temporary relief by applying heat to painful areas.
Avatar m tn In an active duty US Navy not at fault accident in 1973, training for Vietnam, my ACL was torn, and the Navy doctors said they tried an experimental procedure to split the PCL, and tie it into the ACL to perform both functions. Recently Dr. Koco Eaton, sports doctor of the Buccaneers & Devil Rays said they probably did was the opposite.
Avatar n tn My Father in law used to place ice bags on his knees before and after playing golf or walking a lot. Exercise will also help, but it has to be non-impact, like bicycling or stationary cycling. Simply sitting in a chair and lifting the foot until the knee is straight, maybe with a couple pounds of weight on the ankle, can help keep the surrounding muscles and ligaments strong enough to provide support. Hope this helps!
