Killing thyroid with radiation

Common Questions and Answers about Killing thyroid with radiation

Avatar n tn I was recently diagnosed with Graves Disease but my doctor cannot even feel my thyroid and although my levels are beyond the normal range they are not not off the charts. Is iodine radiation done regardless of the severity or non-severity in my case besides other treatment. I've tried Methimazole and broke out in hives about 3 weeks into it. I am freaked out about killing my thyroid and being tired and sluggish the rest of my life. I understand that is a primary symtom of hypothyroid.
Avatar f tn hi silly question i know but i was just wondering when someone has RAI to kill off the thyroid why do they have to be isolated is it because the radiation they emit can kill off other peoples thyroid. my sister had RAI today and i wondered as i have a TT can i go near her as i have no thyroid. i know this sounds silly but it seems that by having this treatment it will only damage her thyroid and nothing else so wondered if it was the same for others.
Avatar m tn You do understand that once your thyroid has been destroyed by radiation, you will be hypo and dependent on replacement thyroid hormones for the rest of your life? You will never be "done" with this if your thyroid is irradiated. Have you been diagnosed with Graves'?
Avatar n tn sounds like there are several possible reasons for being dx. with thyroid disorders but this one is most interesting to myself. Do we or you really know the odds of this being a main cause? Any info is greatly appreciated.
736040 tn?1257436457 The American Thyroid Association information sheet on nodules is excellent -- I agree with all the efforts to minimize dose as much as possible following the "ALARA" principle - As low as reasonably achievable. Best regards.
Avatar n tn I would not advise it, due to the fact that it contains Iodine, It does not protect the rest of your body from radiation anyway, it will only fill your thyroid with Iodine and prevent it from absoring radiation, but not anything else. in addition may cause problems with your meds.
Avatar f tn I was born in the Ohio Valley in 1955. The doctor had a radiation treatment done on me prior to me going home to start my great childhood. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism approx. 20 years ago. Each time I go to my doctor, I have the same problems... fatigue, weight gain, dry skin. depression, and lost libido. I request the doctor to increase my Synthroid. He is reluctant. I'm sure I need to go to an endocrinologist.
8650265 tn?1421565413 hyperthyroid is usually treated by killing your thyroid with radiation or by surgical removal. these aren't good options while pregnant. but other hormones in pregnancy can effect the thyroid. It also depends what other symptoms you are having.
696393 tn?1254429207 But, we DO have patients with PARATHYROID disorders. I am hypothyroid, so yes, I have thyroid issues as well...that is being treated successfully with levothyroxine, low dose of 25mcg. My problem, and I'm not getting responses by posting daily, so I'm guessing there are NOT ALOT of parathyroid patients out there: HIGH PTH of between 323 and 878 for 2+ years now...NORMAL CALCIUM (9.2)...
Avatar f tn MY DOCTOR WANTED TO GO AHEAD AND INCREASE MY SYNTHROID TO 250MCG BEFORE THEY GET THE RESULTS BACK FROM MY ULTRASOUND.. IS THIS A SAFE DOSEAGE. LAST TIME HE INCREASED IT TO 200 HE SAID THAT IT WAS A HIGH DOSE?
865758 tn?1285952904 For example, iodine-125 can damage the thyroid gland by radiation damage, because the thyroid gland concentrates iodide into cells of the gland where it is used to make thyroid hormones. Infections, and in particular certain viruses and bacteria, can also cause thyroiditis by infecting the gland and damaging (or killing) cells and impairing their abilities to produce thyroid hormones.
Avatar f tn I am a 41yr old female. I have taken the radiation some years back and have been on synthroid ever since. Upon my recent blood work my TSH lever was off and my dr has taken me off my medication for a few weeks. Today I woke up feeling fine, took my son to school, came home and did some house work, then all of a sudden I felt like my whole body was about to crash. My energy level dropped, I felt light headed, nausiated, and like I was going to pass out.
Avatar m tn I have been dxed with a 1.49 cm nodule on the right side of the thyroid. More than a quarter of a century ago I had radical radiation treatment for Breast Cancer, my Dr. suspects this fed into the formation of this nodule. I will have the biopsy this week.
739091 tn?1300666027 I spent all of last year fighting stage 3 breast cancer. Chemo, mastectomy, more chemo and then radiation. I got 2nd degree burns on my neck from the radiation, bad enough that he had to stop treating that area for a week. I finished my radiation in September. In October I started getting energy back and started feeling like "me" again. I was eating healthy and had gotten up to 3 miles a day walking. That lasted 2 months.
Avatar f tn Why is a thyroid shield not used for a patient getting radiation treatments to the breast after breast cancer
Avatar n tn Very interesting thyroid history. I was told after radiation treatments that I would become HYPOthyroid, which I did, for about 2 years. Then for some reason I went HYPER thyroid. My endo has followed me closely for 6 months hoping that it would resolve itself. She put me on Atenolol to slow my heartrate in the meantime. I go back in 2 weeks for more bloodwork and at that time we will decide whether I will have a thyroidectomy or Radioactive Iodine. With my radiation history it scares me.
Avatar f tn It is, however, recommended that thyroidal radiation be kept to a minimum; a thyroid shield can be used to prevent exposure of the thyroid to radiation. There's no need to postpone your dental work... Ask for a shield when you have the x-rays done.
Avatar f tn I had a TT on 2-3-10 due to papillary carcinoma. The tumor was 1.2 cm and I had RAI (100 millicuries) on 3-15-10. Going hypo was tough but I'm feeling better every day. My ENT surgeon referred me to an oncologist right after the cancer diagnosis. He said that the oncologist would be able to monitor my labs and oversee my long term care. I saw the oncologist a few weeks after surgery and really liked him.
199177 tn?1490498534 I know that they used radiation to shrink her thyroid and it worked. She only has to take a small amount of thyroid medication now. She worked through the entire process and had very little effects. I think it will work out fine for your husband too. I hope it will all be just fine for you all in the end.
Avatar f tn scan came back with the following:There is an area of intense activity about the anterior and inferior aspect of the neck consistent with residual tumor.(no question about this part) "Increased activity is again demonstrated about the anterior upper neck which could be due to activity in submandibular glands which is greater on the right than on the left. Some faint activity is demonstrated in the region of the bladder." The dr. said that that was nothing...
Avatar n tn I went through 5 months of chemo, mastectomy with no node involment, following with 5 weeks of radiation. I did pretty well until I got to radiation. My body did not tolerate the supraclavicular radiation well. It was painful and my clavicle and neck became swollen on the side of the radiation. I suffered from brachial plexopathy but had no residual effects. Actually a 2 months ago I was doing really good and felt I was back to normal.
Avatar m tn There are still two nodules left in remaining thyroid bed. Do I let new specialist try to remove tissue or do iodine radiation therapy? I was told radiation will not take care of nodules only tissue. Do I want nodules removed before radiation?
Avatar f tn He will have to have radiation done on his thyroid. I feel like I am going to lose my mind. In the 16 yrs we have been together, these last few months have been hell. I can't even talk reasonably to him. Cant even have a normal adult conversation before he is blowing up. Someone ease tell me he will get better with the meds. How long until we see some calming?
Avatar n tn Two other people have severe health issues with their thyroid as well. One person is on their death bed with terminal cancer. I am concerned. Does anyone know if being exposed to radiation while being an xray tech could have caused this problem? Anyones help would be appreciated. At this point I am scared of the possibility of a reality of cancer knowing that radiation is unpredictable. I have read that radiation can even attack you 10 to 20 years later.
