Taking a pain killer to avoid the pain is not good medicine. It is masking the underlying condition which can be a serious one. A hepatologist is not an expert in kidney disease. They should refer you to a Urologist. A Urologist specializes in diseases and conditions of the kidneys and urinary track.
Avatar f tn Urologist performed cystocopy (normal), ultrasound (normal with R kidney hydronephrosis), CT scan showed no hydronephrosis but two 2mm non obstructing LEFT kidney stones. I keep having symptoms of what feels like uti that subsides with drinking a lot of water. Macrobid removes all symptoms while i'm on it but they return 2 days after I stop taking them. I don't have any other symptoms, the pain I usually feel is bladder discomfort and pain in urethra, some burning and urgency.

Those results suggest that over a year's time, among 10,000 postmenopausal women taking hormones, five would develop kidney stones who wouldn't have if they hadn't used the pills.
The risks were similar for women taking Prempro, pills containing estrogen plus progestin — or Premarin, estrogen-only pills.

Recent data suggest that overall, about 6 percent of postmenopausal women develop kidney stones.

Dr.
342647 tn?1291111533 I suffer from kidney stones... they suck, but I have a high pain tolerance and opt not to take anything. Yes, they hurt... but if you think about how the pain won't last forever, it helps. And, the stones would have to be pretty large for them to cause kidney damage. Just so you know, most of the time kidney stones resolve themselves. They will break down in the kidneys and most of the time you won't even know you are passing them.
Avatar n tn When they found the staghorn in your kidney, what was the treatment? Why did it get so bad that your kidney had to be removed? I guess my question is what happened from age 43 to 45 as far as treating the condition when they found the staghorn? Thanks so much for your comments...they are very helpful!
Avatar n tn An utra sound found nothing unusual. The urologist thinks it is either kidney stones or the residual effects of a bad infection. He would like me to get a CT. I am concerned as I have had 3 CT scans after a PE in both lungs 2 years ago after delivery. What are your thoughts? He does not think it is IC because it came on so suddenly. He said that the urine cultures were tainted due to the antibiotics. I can go 2-3.5 hours between void but I am holding it. What are your thoughts?
Avatar m tn It was found that my stone was calcium based and I was told to avoid all dairy products as well as some fruit and veg. There are 4 different types of kidney stones. Unfortunately, once you have had kidney stones the chances of getting another one are much higher.
Avatar m tn I had all three infected at the same time once because I waited to long to go to the doctor when I didn't feel right. Kidney stones could also cause pain and frequent urination. A simple urine test at the doctors will tell you whats up and if an infection should only take an antibiotic to clear up. Waiting to long may only make it worse.
Avatar n tn Up to 20% of adults with kidney stones may have medullary sponge kidney; the corresponding figure in children is unknown. Among patients with kidney stones, hypercalciuria may occur in 40-50%, and recurrent gross hematuria may occur in 10-20%. Although no evidence indicates that risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs) is higher in patients with medullary sponge kidney, up to 5% of males and 35% of females have a UTI.
Avatar m tn These substances can create small crystals that become stones. The biggest risk factor for kidney stones is dehydration. Kidney stones may not produce symptoms until they begin to move down the tubes (ureters) through which urine empties into the bladder. When this happens, the stones can block the flow of urine out of the kidneys. This causes swelling of the kidney or kidneys, causing pain. The pain is usually severe. Kidney stones are common.
Avatar n tn Kidney stones are more common in men than women. When they occur in women, most have no explanation for their occurrence. A small number of women have a parathyroid gland problem that produces high levels of serum calcium. In pregnancy, stones are more easily passed because of the normal dilation of the ureter. Stones rarely cause obstruction, but they can contribute to altered flow of urine that predisposes to infection. Treatment in pregnancy by traditional urologoic surgery is safe.

Avatar n tn Other causes include bladder stones, ureteral stones, and interstitial cystitis Bladder stones are uncommon in women particularly young women with sterile urine. They can cause slowing of the urine stream and forcing to urinate. Though rare, a urachal cyst might be a consideration. Ureteral stones can cause urgency and frequency with small volumes and yet the urinalysis is clear. You might also consider a problem outside of the urinary tract, such as spastic bowel or diverticulitis.
1832268 tn?1326819610 We brought him home and did twice daily under skin fluids plus standard recommended meds and kidney diet. We then took him to a kidney specialist who was trying to determine at what stage of Kidney disease he was at. Got his levels down a little more a week little later, things were looking promising and his energy levels were increasing dramatically. Less than a week later, he completely stopped eating. Took him to specialist after 2 days of not eating.

1522652 tn?1291241954 I know that there is a link beginning with my chronic uti's as a child, to my severe pms as an adolecent into adulthood, and then on to my chronic kidney stones and infections as an adult, and then the loss of my kidney, as well as the problems I'm experiencing now. My question is what specific tests do I need to request to accurately check my thyroid, parathyroid, and my calcium levels? Also, are there any specific questions that I need to ask.

The safety of spirulina in pregnant and nursing women, young children, and individuals with kidney or liver disease has not been determined.
Avatar f tn The risk factors for recurrent UTI in females are sexual intercourse, use of spermicidal products, having a first UTI at an early age, and having a maternal history of UTIs. Most common causes are stones in kidney, changing sexual partners frequently, pregnancy, diabetes and childhood infections. 748543 tn?1463449675 For the past few weeks I have been throwing around ideas as to the best way to respond to this matter. You see a recent article ( Feb.3 , 2009 NY times) titled "Best treatment for TMJ May be Nothing" nearly made me clench my jaw to pieces. While well written, I found that the author, Ms. Brody, relied heavily on out dated and narrow perspective supplied to her by a small group of dentists.

Please help me alittle, thanks!
