He had his first stone at the age of 18 and since that time has averaged at least 1 surgery a year for unpassable stones while passing small stones and grit on a regular basis. Avatar f tn Hi, i too have taken topamax I was on 200 mg for 3 years for chiari headaches and it didnt do anything for me as Selma said I too havent found a med that helps with chiari headaches and there are so many side effects like topamaz can cause kidney stones. I mean sometimes the treatment can cause worse problems. I have been put on zonigrine and its like topamax and its doing nothing for me so Im getting off of it. It too can cause kidney stones. Like we need anymore problems.

It is not unreasonable to postpone treatment of existing stones, because often the calcifications are still in the collecting ducts ( not the renal pelvis) where the stones may never cause a problem. It is usually the sequella of medullary sponge kidney that require management (stones and infection). Many patients have hypercalciuria and are treated with thiazide diurectics to limit stone formation.

You have to have a lab test called a 24 urine test done... this tells the composition of the stones which does change over time Also some urologists will order this test but don't really understand how to interpret it... depending on where you live a nephrologist may be able to help you.

When I had my surgery they cut me from back ribcage to the front below my bladder so there is a lot of nerves that were severed during the surgery. Most of the time if feels like my kidney is huge and taking up too much space inside and under my ribcage, so the pain is not just right in the nerve endings.

They did surgery to put in stint's to drain off the infection and they will wait about 2 weeks to remove the stones. The doctor said her body is just producing A LOT of stones and she'll have to change her diet and take medication to help stop it. Thank God they figured it out.

Routine evaluation includes an IVP ( a dye test of the kidneys ), cystoscopy ( looking inside the bladder with a lighted scope ) . When these do not yield a cause, CT scan is performed. Other less common causes include a condition called papillary necrosis and AV malformations ( a connection between the artery and vein of the kidney).

After 3rd attempt at EWSL it was decided to try laser treatment cystoscopically. This was "partially" successful. Some of the stones were removed, some he was not able to reach. I was left with a stint which came out before I made it home from the hospital.

Avatar m tn I am not able to give you a diagnoses based on your results. Have you seen an Endocrinologist? I suffered from kidney stones and also pain in my kidney areas for many years. I have been stone free for six years now, since I seen the Endocrinologist. He reviewed my blood work and found several deficiencies, like Vitamin D, low Potassium, and high contents of Salt to name a few. He recommended foods to avoid since my stone were calcium acetate formations and some medications.

They are not concerned about kidney disease? Calcium channel blockers work well for hypertension and is it controlling this for you? I would speak to your doctor regarding your concerns and if switching classes of medications makes sense in your case.
