Kidney stones topamax

Common Questions and Answers about Kidney stones topamax

1343409 tn?1296029607 I started taking Topamax my junior year of high school, then I found out I had 4 kidney stones. The doctors think that it might have been because of the topamax, but I wasn't drinking enough water with it, so I think that could have been the problem. I want to try again and make sure I drink plenty of me, this time I will..lesson learned. First I have to collect my urine for 24 hours and send it away to be tested to see if my kidneys are functioning well.
1619332 tn?1299021545 I'm on 100 mg of Topamax and my Nerologist who gave it to me is talking about taking me off it because he said there was a study that showed that if you had a family history (which my family does) of kidney stones that if you take Topamax that your chances of getting kidney stones increases. So great the only migraine medication that ever worked for me gave me the worse pain in my back ever...just freaking great...
Avatar f tn I wish I could take Topamax but apparently if you have a history of kidney stones is a no go! I picked up a stomach virus this week and had a few days of vomiting and all the other stuff that goes with it. OMG! my head hurt so so bad for 3 days. I wasnt able to move. It finally broke yesterday I was so so thankful. I think I would almost trade another kidney stone to never have that pain again!
Avatar f tn I used to take Topamax for nerver pain, it was the only anti-seizure med that really worked well for the pain, and I had three attacks of kidney stones before I found out it was the Topamax causing them. I had to stop taking it, but was wondering if anyone else ever had this problem. I did a little research on it and in a small percentage of people it actually does do this, but my urologist only knew of one other person who took Topamax and had kidney stones.
214901 tn?1227571155 I developed five kidney stones(3 in one, 2 in the other). Apparently Topamax can cause kidney stones! I wish my doctors had told me this a few years back! I would ask your doctor what side effects are normal, and what side effects might occur with this medication. Also ask about Metoporol for migranes. It worked for me. I hope you feel better. Good luck!
Avatar n tn The last thing I will mention is the increased risk for kidney stones. About 2 years after I stopped taking it I had my first kidney stone and I have had 12 since then. Don't know that this med was for sure the reason, but my doctor has found no other explanation and I have been tested for everything and poked and vibrated and they can find nothing. Good luck!
Avatar f tn Topamax worked wonderful on my migraines but over the next couple of years I developed kidney stones and each one grew larger and the pain worsened. Only a small percentage of people have this side effect but I caution you to drink lots of water and keep an eye on any flank pain you may have. It has been 2 years since taking topamax and still have the occasional stone but I am no longer producing them. Just an FYI for everyone who reads this.
681148 tn?1437665191 but if you can wait it out, that would be better. My friend who I mentioned earlier, she got kidney stones because of the topamax. This is one of the serious side-effects that topamax can cause, but it is a rare side-effect that only happens in some people. It can be avoided by most people as long as you drink and ENTIRE glass of water with every topamax pill you take. This is extremely important... never take topamax without water!!!
Avatar f tn Don't forget about the possibility of developing kidney stones, breast pain, menstrual problems (for women obviously) body odor and inability to sweat while on Topamax. Basically anything that is carbonated is going to taste like **** while on this med. Sodas are carbonated; sodas contain sugar. You stop drinking soda and consuming that sugar, sure you'll lose weight. Diet sodas don't necessarily mean anything if there is high fructose corn syrup listed in the ingredients.
Avatar f tn u do need to drink plenty of water to help avoid kidney stones.....but, with the same note ur dr should be doing regular labs to keep tabs on all that. Drs RX meds knowing they have side effects, just as surgeries have risks, but the benefits must out weight the risk for the dr to suggest it....u have to have a trust in ur dr. If not, get another opinion or ask ur dr if there is another treatment that would not have the side effects this med has.
Avatar n tn for quite a long time, haven't lost a pound, and it hasn't altered my appetite, but that's not what I'm taking it for - although I sure wouldn't mind losing weight! Make sure to drink lots of water so you don't get kidney stones, and if you start to get one drink real lemonade with artificial sweetner to acidify your urine and break down the stone. Good luck in your weight loss - I hope you reach your desired goal, and I'm so glad it's helping you with your mood - that's a major bonus!
Avatar m tn I ended up Migraine free , had a happy Mood but omg it destroyed my Life !! I lost most of my beauiful Hair , ended up with Kidney Stones , a Heartproblem , Immune Disorder equivalent to Lupus and I also lost 65 lns at that time which made me Anorexic !! I was more in Hospitals and Emergency Rooms than at Home and I want to warn you .
Avatar m tn So, I am not a doctor, but one of the side effects I am reading about from Topamax is an increased ammonia level in the blood. Then I read that heightened ammonia in blood can lead to kidney stones, hair loss and confusion...all side effects of Topamax. So, my thinking is that adding water and maybe some milk thistle or other liver supporting supplements may help tip the balance back.
Avatar f tn I had this done at Walmart they were very helpful in the their optical department just take the print out with you from Topamax. Also Drink lots of water to prevent kidney stones they warn you. I dont like seizures or migranes.
Avatar n tn It took about six months for me to notice any weight changes. About a year after being on the drug, I got kidney stones (another side effect). After this episode, I quit taking the drug. You shoudl not just quit, you need to ween yourself off of it. Ever since, I have gained all of the weight back and then some. I think this medication triggers something in your brain that makes you stop doing obsessive behaviors.
Avatar n tn I have not been exercising because I am recuperating from a double total knee replacement, but hope to start on a treadmill soon. I am faithful about drinking the water each day to avoid the kidney stones that are a very real side effect. I don't think I am going to be able to take a much larger dose than what I am presently taking. Anyone else have a comment on their dosage. I presently weight 218 lbs and I am 5'3". I would like to get down to about 160 to be healthy.
Avatar n tn Those using Topomax need to be especially mindful about drinking plenty of fluids due to increased chances of kidney stones. Stoney will likely develop if fluid intake is not maintained. Looking forward to weight loss benefit as I gained 30# over the past 4 years on anti-depressents. Has anyone used this for bipolar?
Avatar n tn however, with topamax, you need to balance protein intake with LOTS of water to prevent kidney stones, so keep this in mind! I am adding protein by adding a protein powder/plain yogurt/soymilk shake (it tastes terrible!) :) I am also restarting the multivitamin I used to take and taking biotin, which supports hair and skin health. Someone on this board mentioned evening of primrose (thank you!), so I am now going to add that as well.
Avatar f tn I did have to go every 6 months for blood work. I was also told to drink plenty of water as it can cause the formation of kidney stones..... So if ur Dr is not closely monitoring u, and ur Vit levels have a talk with him/her and mention ur concerns. My Vit D, B12 and magnesium were all watched and I was on supplements.
Avatar f tn The pain practically went away. I had severe kidney stones while I was on Topamax. I ended up hospitalized with a stone that got stuck and had to be retrieved out of the ureter. My right kidney started to fail because they did not know it was stuck. We thought we would wait for it to come out on it's own. After four days of waiting and no kidney stone, back to the hospital I went. They found out that my ureters were the size of a child the age of 8 or so.
Avatar n tn The feet tingling is very common and will go away, but it takes time, so be patient - it's just an annoyance. Drink tons of water to avoid kidney stones (or other stones), and if you feel like you're getting one (a pain in the middle of your back on either side) make lemonade with real lemons, or real lemon juice, to taste with artificial sweetner, and drink it in addition to your water (3-8 8oz glasses of lemonade) to acidify your urine and break up the stones.
Avatar n tn Thanks for all the input, I really appreciate it. I just found out that Topamax can increase kidney stone develpment. I have a history of developing kidney stones. (I had it with both my pregnancies). So I think my doctor is going to want to put me on Elavil instead. I am just concerned about weight gain because I hear that is one of its side effects. Anybody have any experience with this??
Avatar n tn Some of the side effects are cognitive (decreased attention, confusion, impaired memory) difficulties, kidney stones, and weight loss are the most common side effects. Some patients also complain about dizziness, drowsiness, paresthesia, and a nervous feeling. You can find more information in the PDR (should be found at your local library). I hope that topiramide helps control your seizures.
Avatar f tn I have no idea what is causing my problems, obviously, but am concerned about the kidney issue. OH, and I have been taking topamax for migranes, which I just found out I should have never, ever been prescribed, as it causes kidney stones. Anyone with kidney problems should never take the drug. So, now I am weaning off of that as well. Thanks for any thoughts.
Avatar n tn I've been on Topamax for over a year now and it did that to me at first too, the numbness or tingling, mostly in my toes, I started out at 50mg. and now have been on 75mg, for 6 mos. I will say for me, those side effects have gone away and personally the good out ways the bad, you see, I had a mild stroke from the migraine I had, I have hemiplegic migraines and to me it is worth a little discomfort rather than go through that again! If it were me, I would not stop it, but that's my opinion.
Avatar f tn I just started Topamax. I'm on 25mg/day and will increase by 25mg/week until I reach 100mg. I heard the weightloss effect depends on the dose. So, what dose did everyone here have their success? And what type of diet/eating plan and exercise plan did you do to help it along? I'm desperate to lose 40 lbs (half of which I gained on Zoloft-no longer taking). PLEASE respond if you had any weightloss on this drug, I'm very curious. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!
Avatar m tn So go figure. Hep C in and of itself can cause kidney problems. Kidney stones can also be caused by high levels of vitamin c, and I believe, by combinations of caffeine and calcium. Some drugs (like topamax) can exacerbate the tendency to form stones.
1512520 tn?1290261730 I have read too many horror stories of hair falling out, memory loss, and kidney stones at higher doses to risk this for pounds lost. In saying this, I was surprised at how much the Topamax helped with my mood swings (mood stabilizer) and I would be willing to try this maybe as an addition to an anxiety medication in the future again for that purpose. I had no problems going off this medication.
Avatar f tn Saw Dr. Sultan about headaches. Going to start Topamax despite history of kidney stones. Last try before Lyrica.
1415174 tn?1453246703 I don't want to ruin my health by getting kidney stones, or osteoporosis and the other side effects but I dont' want to get in a car accident or fall down either. Can someone tell me their experiences with Topamax. I particularly want to know side effect you have experienced and also if you had vertigo too.
