Avatar f tn Stones in the ureter, even if blocking on one side, do NOT cause swelling of the ankles etc. as long as you have a normal kidney on the other side. Certainly the pain your having could be from ureteral stones, and ureteroscopy is preferred in lower ureteral stones in child-bearing age women because lithotripsy may bruise the ovaries if used for lower ureteral stones. Infection is unlikely as infection and an obstructing stone usually leads to a high fever and is an emergency.
Avatar f tn Urologist performed cystocopy (normal), ultrasound (normal with R kidney hydronephrosis), CT scan showed no hydronephrosis but two 2mm non obstructing LEFT kidney stones. I keep having symptoms of what feels like uti that subsides with drinking a lot of water. Macrobid removes all symptoms while i'm on it but they return 2 days after I stop taking them. I don't have any other symptoms, the pain I usually feel is bladder discomfort and pain in urethra, some burning and urgency.
409451 tn?1206900232 Also noticed a swollen gland in groin that's been there almost 2 months (no pain there). Went to ob/gyn for uti symptoms and gland, no bacteria found, but slight blood in urine. I always feel like I have a uti right before and during my period, and sometimes feel irritated "down there" after I pee--randomly throughout each month. I've also been bloated for about 2 months.
Avatar n tn I have been dealing with Kidney Stones for the past seven years. I have had lithotripsy 4 times to break up the stones. I have also passed several on my own. My first symptons that something is going on is that I have slight chills and severe diarrhea. It starts slow and within 2 hours it is pouring out of me like water. I then get abdominal pain and nausous. If I take a Vicotin soon enough after these symptoms start I can usually ward off throwing up.

Those results suggest that over a year's time, among 10,000 postmenopausal women taking hormones, five would develop kidney stones who wouldn't have if they hadn't used the pills.
The risks were similar for women taking Prempro, pills containing estrogen plus progestin — or Premarin, estrogen-only pills.

Recent data suggest that overall, about 6 percent of postmenopausal women develop kidney stones.

Avatar n tn My 15 year old daughter had a CT scan to check for kidney stones. The doctor told me the results showed stones in both kidneys...more in the right than in the left. Also showed a 4cm by 4cm cyst on the right ovary. She put her on birth control pills for a couple of cycles to see if the cyst goes away. So we are starting month 1 with the birth control pills, and waiting for an ultrasound in a month or two. As for the kidney stones...
Avatar f tn I have been told I'm anemic for some time now but did not realize I had kidney stones until a couple years ago when I was struck by a painful one that put me in the emergency room. I wonder if there is a correlation but my doctor's believe the anemia is due to heavy menstrual bleeding and kidney stones are due to not enough fluids. When I had my original stone, I may not have had enough fluids but generally I drink quite a bit of water throughout the day.
Avatar n tn The urologist does not think it is IC because he said that burning is not a symptoms and the symptoms which started with frequency for 2 days and then the burning and pain started. It has been going on for 30 days. Would a cysto retrograde show IC? He still believed it is the residual effects of a UTI. Do you have any ideas. In your opinion what should the next steps be?
Avatar n tn Other possibilities are irritable bowel syndrome, hepatitis(inflammation of the liver), kidney stones, pneumonia, musculoskeletal pain, lower rib fracture and malignancy. Irritation of the nerves supplying this area can also cause pain. Irritation can be due to nerve compression or pinching due to any spine related pathology. In females, ovarian pathology can cause such symptoms. You should get an ultrasound right upper abdominal area done to confirm the diagnosis.
Avatar f tn Dietary changes may help prevent kidney stone formation if you are prone for it. Prevention strategies for kidney stones include - Increasing your daily fluid intake and taking the recommended daily allowance of calcium. Increase your fluid intake to the point where your urine volume reaches 2.5 litres a day. This may mean drinking up to 3 litres a day, if you live in a hot, dry climate or if you are involved in strenuous physical activity.
Avatar n tn I'm 22 years old, and have suffered with kidney stones for 2 years, ranging from 1 mm to one thats in me right now which is over 10mm! On two separate occasions, when being seen in the ER while in ridiculous amounts of pain, I have been told by doctors that I shouldn't be in pain because there is no obstructing stone. Bull, I say. Renal Colic is a very distinct type of pain, and believe me, there is no mistaking it. I had one doctor go so far as to tell me it must be muscular back pain..
Avatar m tn It was found that my stone was calcium based and I was told to avoid all dairy products as well as some fruit and veg. There are 4 different types of kidney stones. Unfortunately, once you have had kidney stones the chances of getting another one are much higher.
Avatar f tn What hurts or bothers us doesn't often do anything to baby. Many women get kidney stones while pregnant, some even have surgery for them during pregnancy. Are you have an MRI done or ultrasound?
4943237 tn?1428994695 I had the same symptoms but no pain down below. Extreme kidney pain. I had stones show up on a regular xray. When i went to doc and thought I had a UTI but the test came back negative so she sent me for xrays and that showed the stones. She sent me home and said drink lots of water and use a heating pad and pain reliever and wait for it to pass. She said if the pain got too unbearable to go to the emergency room. I ended up passing it but haven't had the symptoms again.
Avatar n tn Up to 20% of adults with kidney stones may have medullary sponge kidney; the corresponding figure in children is unknown. Among patients with kidney stones, hypercalciuria may occur in 40-50%, and recurrent gross hematuria may occur in 10-20%. Although no evidence indicates that risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs) is higher in patients with medullary sponge kidney, up to 5% of males and 35% of females have a UTI.
456645 tn?1208679571 Body type seems to play a role since this usually affects slim women. This is said to be due to a problem with the thick membrane that covers or surrounds the kidney. The perirenal fascia is a covering that envelopes the kidneys and provides stability and support to the organ. Nephroptosis may be symptomatic. That is the more common signs and symptoms are flank pain, blood in the urine, formation of kidney stones and repeated urinary tract infections.
Avatar m tn These substances can create small crystals that become stones. The biggest risk factor for kidney stones is dehydration. Kidney stones may not produce symptoms until they begin to move down the tubes (ureters) through which urine empties into the bladder. When this happens, the stones can block the flow of urine out of the kidneys. This causes swelling of the kidney or kidneys, causing pain. The pain is usually severe. Kidney stones are common.
Avatar f tn I know how you feel, although I haven't had spasms everyday, I have experienced them on occasion. It is worse than kidney stones. Undescribible pain!! It could be a number of things. Your kidney could be floating, you could have hydronephrosis, your renal artery could be obstructed and the blood supply is cut off intermittantly, and of coarse the old kidney stone is a possiblity. You really need some test done to see what is going on. I know how hard it is to find a good urologist.
Avatar n tn I had several kidney stones and hydronephrosis while pregnant (mostly due to improper or inability of the kidney to drain), but at that time my nephroptosis hadn't been diagnosed. If you have a good doctor (OB/GYN and Urologist) you should have minimal issues during pregnancy. If the docs are watching you closely this should avoid serious complication. Good luck!
1522652 tn?1291241954 You can be vegan and still get calciferous stones! I think it may well be time for you to start the hunt for a decent doctor!
470425 tn?1246926200 ) Apparently the kidney infections could have been a result of this, but most likely the sponge kidney was something they happened on by accident. Anyway, i haven't had a kidney infection for at nearly 2 years now, and mostly due to some good advice that the nurse gave me: Don't overwash 'down there' - i was using a lot of soap in an effort to keep things clean, but apparently this ruins the delecate ph balance, so wash only with warm water.
Avatar n tn I was doing a search online for multiple kidney stones in both kidneys and came across your posting. I'm a 26 year old female with a family history of kidney stones. In Jan 09, I experienced a dull aching pain in my side that lasted for a couple weeks and then went away. I experienced something similar in late Feb 09 and after a week of this pain, I went to the clinic (I'm in the military). The dr couldn't find anything wrong and said I must ahve pulled an abdominal muscle.
Avatar n tn Other causes include bladder stones, ureteral stones, and interstitial cystitis Bladder stones are uncommon in women particularly young women with sterile urine. They can cause slowing of the urine stream and forcing to urinate. Though rare, a urachal cyst might be a consideration. Ureteral stones can cause urgency and frequency with small volumes and yet the urinalysis is clear. You might also consider a problem outside of the urinary tract, such as spastic bowel or diverticulitis.
Avatar n tn After a urine test revealed no UTI, but trace blood, I was sent for CT and my urine and blood sent to lab. The CT revealed no kidney stones. My urine had calcium oxade crystals (sp?) in it and my WBC count was up. The doctor assumed that I had passed a kidney stone and told me to take it easy. I have since returned home, and have not felt any relief. The pain has gotten worse. Now, when I bend down at the waist, cough, or take a wrong step, my legs go numb.
Avatar f tn It was only by accident that knew I had a kidney stone. I was sent for xrays for other reasons. My initial symptoms were pins and needles in my feet and puffiness under my eye (the opposite one to the kidney that had the stone). It took the medical profession months to find out what the matter was. But I knew I had a water work problem, because I went to reflexology and aromatherapy sessions and the reflexologist on examining me said that I had a waterworks problem.
Avatar n tn I have been on medication for a few months and still have these symptoms off and on. Do you have any advice? Thanks for your time.
1832268 tn?1326819610 My dog, a shar-pei had been always sick, since she was a little cuddling puppy. She suffered from what is called FSF, familial shar pei fever - nasty episodes of high fever 'that possibly at a later stage 'might' result in renal failure', like an autoimmune disease, born with it. Some vets say that one of the main triggers involved in the initiation of fever episodes is stress. I tried my best to offer her a stress-free environment and therefore less fever episodes and no renal failure.

Avatar m tn As I understand, Flomax is off-label for use in women to help passage of kidney stones by smoothing the muscles of the ureter, etc. I know exactly how you feel ... A 3.0mm stone has a high chance to pass on it's own, but the waiting is the hardest part. You've gotten terrific advice above.
