Avatar n tn My husband has a history of kidney stones (like his father who has suffered with them for over 30 years). This time however, he didn't experience the pain in his side, back or abdomen. Instead he has pain in the tip of his penis. He doesn't believe he has passed the stone yet but has not been straining his urine (strainer is lost - been a while since last stone). Is it possible he passed the stone and the pain is the remnants of this? He is not vomiting nor does he have fever.
Avatar m tn Drink plenty of water! The following is for Kidney stones There are nutrients you need to add—and to limit. Vitamin A (not betacarotene) promotes healthy functioning of the urinary tract, so people who are deficient in it sometimes form kidney stones more easily than others. Avatar m tn A recent article in our local paper has a dietician recommending a diet for minimizing the formation of kidney stones that is the exact opposite of what the diet my urologist has me on. His diet is based on what seemed logical: low calcium and low oxalates to prevent the combination of the two to form a stone in the kidney.
Avatar f tn As you have had/still have calcium oxalate stones, your risk of getting more kidney stones is much increased. Avoid the foods mentioned and browse the web for more information on oxalate rich foods that you should avoid or eat less of. It is also very important to always stay well hydrated. Your urologist may have advised you to drink 2 litres of fluids (4 pints) during the day, more if you are doing exercises that make you sweat or perspiring in hot weather.
Avatar n tn I had my first kidney stone send me to the ER in April (5mm). I don't know if it actually passed because there was no evidence, but the pain did stop after 2 weeks. Through testing in June, I know that I have 5 small stones in my left kidney and the kidney has hydroneph... can't remember the word at the moment, but it means enlarged/swollen. My uric acid (1480) and oxaclic acid levels were high. I am now on allopurinol (sp? the bottle is not with me).
Avatar f tn I had some pain in September 2016 and a diagnosed kidney stone at that time. But the pain didn't really start until January this year. I had severe flank pain on both sides and abdominal pain especially after eating. Was admitted and treated for kidney infection. A few weeks later they found out my Gallbladder was overactive and removed it. Now I just have the flank pain on both sides. It is killing me.

Avatar n tn I have had kidney stones since 2001. Currently (as of May 1) I have had a 15 mm and a 10 mm (as well as several of their babies) in my kidney. I have been scheduled for a systoscopy but when I went for my pre-op, I had extremely (dangerous) high blood pressure. I have never had this high blood pressure in my life (even when I went to the emergency room for kidney stone attacks).
Avatar m tn Thank you so much for your thoughtful response. My kidney stone problem is a problem with oxalate. I think I will stop the turmeric for now. I am disappointed, as I thought this would help the arthritis. I certainly don't want kidney stone problems again. The calcium supplement I take is calcium citrate (not carbonate). Since I already take a prescription potassium citrate (Urocit-K), I guess the turmeric would be keeping that from doing its job of breaking down the oxalate.
Avatar f tn As a woman who has spent most of her life dealing with kidney disorder I feel I have some reason to speak on this subject; however, I am not a doctor. Some basic advice I have is wear cotton bottoms, avoid sugar for a little while, drink lots of water, and don't add anything to your bath that is perfumed or a new brand. Furthermore, I drink a lot of Lite (or light depending on brand) cranberry juice; cran is good for you and the Lite variety has the least sugar.
Avatar f tn I'm 38 and have been diagnosed with oxilate stones/sponge kidney. I was told years ago that some birth control options could actually make it worse. I have managed to adjust my diet but I desperately need to figure out a birth control that will not make it worse. I've been told the same about antibiotics. Can you recommend a birth control and antibiotic that is ok to take? I don't smoke, don't plan on anymore children and have no allergies to medications.
Avatar f tn This past friday at 1:20am I was rushed to the ER from sudden back pain that was unbearable I was so scared for my baby.. Came to the conclusion it's kidney stones and I became more terrified because there's not many pain killers they could give me other than tylenol and morphine, so about the last one I asked if it was ok for my baby, first they said not sure!!
Avatar m tn It has helped me. so far as I know it has broken up two 7mm stones that I had. One in each kidney. Since being dignoised with MSK I am taking it daily.

Avatar m tn I am a 37 year old man. I had Kidney stones in 2002 which was treated by the laser treatment. Again this year in 2010, I had the same problem and was again treated by the same method. The analysis of the stone was found to be due to calcium. My job demands that I remain fit all the time due to lack of medical help. I do drink about 2 liters of water per day some times accompanied with lemon.
Avatar m tn Recurrent kidney infection can be due to diabetes, some anomaly or defect in the kidney or due to the organisms developing antibiotic resistance. Recurrent kidney stones are found renal tubular acidosis, medullary sponge kidney, Dent's disease (genetic disease of the kidney), hyperparathyroidism, primary hyperoxaluria and Crohn's disease. Since the pain comes before periods too, it can also be due to endometriosis.
Avatar n tn Do check your diet. One high in calcium (cheese, milk, yoghurt) and fats can lead to kidney stones. Also you must drink water to keep the kidneys hydrated and efficient. My male friend gets them often and I have watched him go through them and the advice above is what the doctor's tell him every time.
Avatar f tn Diet and exercise can lessen the severity of kidney stones which may form. Organic diet may be helpful. A diet low in high protein foods like meat, low in high oxalate foods like spinach, rhubarb, peanuts, and low in sodium may help. A diet high in fiber like fruits, vegetables can be very helpful. 1660289 tn?1302556798 Dog Food (Canine Diet and Nutrition)/Diet for bladder stones Expert: Gail Vigneault - 6/23/2008 (Canine Nutritionist) Question My 12 year old dog had surgery to remove bladder stones a week ago. We don't have a definite diagnosis on the composition yet, but the vet believes they are the calcium oxalate type. Until we know for sure, she wants to put her on a RX diet - Royal Canin S/O, which offers support for all types of stones by controlling the minerals in the food.
Avatar f tn There are other types as well ( cystine, struvite , uric) Kidney stones may hold a genetic predisposition. In your case, the presence of kidney formers in the family may explain the onset of kidney stones at an earlier age. It is best to open lines of communication with your physicians. At this point, you may discuss on whether a referral to a pain management specialist may help.Continue following physician's advice regarding diet, fluid intake and exercise.
Avatar f tn It depends on what type of kidney stones you have... if you have stones that are a calcium based mixture (calcuim-oxalate for instance) then you should never take a calcium supplement. You would want to increase calcium in your diet through dairy products, etc. but calcium supplements are a definite no-no as they don't break down in your system the way the calcium in food does. If you have any other type of stone such as uric or struvite, etc.
