895634 tn?1283992810 Kidney stone often is hereditary so you should ask if any relatives also had kidney stones. Taking pain killers for the pain is not the proper treatment for kidney stones. Taking a pain killer to avoid the pain is not good medicine. It is masking the underlying condition which can be a serious one. A hepatologist is not an expert in kidney disease. They should refer you to a Urologist. A Urologist specializes in diseases and conditions of the kidneys and urinary track.
Avatar m tn Hello, Since the kindey stone is 7 mm, so the symptoms seem unrelated to the kidney stones. Since you are having pedal or leg edema, hence your cardiac, liver and kidney functions need to be assessed for which I suggest you to consult a physician immediately. Abdominal causes like irritable bowel syndrome can also cause such symptoms. Common symptoms include abdominal cramping or pain, bloating and gassiness, and altered bowel habits(alternate constipation and loose stools).
Avatar n tn Million dollar question - what causes bilateral multiple kidney stones? They keep forming - keep colicing but not passing. Do you go see a urologist, a nephrologist or an endocrinologist? Only had one incident 6 years ago - hyperparathroidism - single adenoma removed, single large stone w/ infection, blocked - had to be removed and scoped out - could not pass even after blasting and stenting.
Avatar f tn How unusual is it for the stones to be in this meaty part of my kidney and since they are still in my kidney aren’t they just going to continue to grow larger? Are these stones causing damage to my kidneys? They don’t seem to be causing any blockages based on the ultrasounds that have been done, but I still have had frequent flank pain and blood visible in my urine prior to the surgery. Is there any hope that I will be able to be stone free and prevent more stones?

A 4mm stone has 80% chances of coming out spontaneously, where as 5mm stone has 20% chances. Stones more than this size usually require treatment. Medical management includes calcium channel blockers, alpha blockers etc. Surgical treatment involves shock wave lithotripsy or percutaneous nephrolithotomy or open surgery.

Avatar n tn Hi there! You have been suffering from a condition which causes recurrent kidney stones. It is passed down through families and cystine stones form anywhere in the urinary tract. Ideally management of your disease should have begun prior to conception. Though in most cases these stones pass on their own but if not then it can result in many complications like initiation of normal labour, risk of urinary tract infection or urosepsis.Treatment in pregnancy varies individual to individual.
Avatar f tn Before you assume your kidney stone production is based on a magnesium deficiency, you need to have your labs and stone analized. An IVP of your kidney will help determine if you don't have a "sponge kidney".Medullary Sponge kidney is an anatomical defect in the kidney which produces multiple kidney stones within pockets of the kidneys. No amount of Magnesium will resolve that. So I wouldn't go messing with your chemistry until you know why.
Avatar m tn A person with a family history of kidney stones may be more likely to develop stones. Urinary tract infections, kidney disorders such as cystic kidney diseases, and certain metabolic disorders such as hyperparathyroidism are also linked to stone formation. In addition, more than 70 percent of people with a rare hereditary disease called renal tubular acidosis develop kidney stones.
Avatar n tn Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) is the most commonly used medical treatment for kidney stones. It uses shock waves that pass easily through the body but are strong enough to break up a kidney stone. If ESWL does not work or if you have a very large stone, Percutaneous nephrolithotomy or nephrolithotripsy is done. The surgeon puts a narrow telescope into the kidney through a cut in your back. He or she then removes the stone or breaks it up and removes it.

Avatar n tn An utra sound found nothing unusual. The urologist thinks it is either kidney stones or the residual effects of a bad infection. He would like me to get a CT. I am concerned as I have had 3 CT scans after a PE in both lungs 2 years ago after delivery. What are your thoughts? He does not think it is IC because it came on so suddenly. He said that the urine cultures were tainted due to the antibiotics. I can go 2-3.5 hours between void but I am holding it. What are your thoughts?

Avatar n tn A subsequent CT scan revealed I had 2 additionall ( 2mm non-obstructing) stones in my right kidney and a cluster of at least (four 2-3 mm stones in my left kidney). They were also non-obstructive. I've been told by a couple of doctors and urologists that they cannot be the cause of my pain, even though the pain feels just like when I had obsturctive ones. I can also feel the damn things moving around and it causes me to have kidney spasms.
Avatar n tn Recurrent pain in the flank region after getting treated for urinary tract infections could be due a strong organism causing the infection, decreased immunity inthe patient, any abnormality in the anatomy of the urinary tract, stones in the kidney or ureter, incomplete recovery from previous infection. Did you ever experience these symptoms before? What was the organism which caused the infection? Do you have fever, night sweats, blood in urine, burning sensation?
Avatar f tn Thanks for the reply. I will definitely mention the parathyroid when I have the ultrasound done on Friday. I've actually been to an endocrinologist, urologist and nephrologist and none of them can figure out why I've passed at least 12 kidney stones in the last 4 years and still have "numerous" stones in each kidney. Anytime I mention parathyroid, they all say that couldn't be it since my calcium is normal. I don't know how to get them to investigate it more thoroughly.

Avatar f tn Hello, Cloudy urine is caused by blood in urine, UTI, bladder infection, kidney stones, gonorrhea and other causes. Glucose can be seen in diabetes mellitus, pheochromocytoma or it can be transient stress induced.Urobiliongen in urine is seen in UTI or hepatitis. Trace protein can be seen in normal persons also. The presence of 3-5 RBCs in urine can be seen in urinary tract infection; kidney stone etc. and is an indication of further testing. Any test result should be correlated clinically.
Avatar n tn Obstruction may be from a urinary stone, a tumor, a blood clot, inflammatory narrowing or external pressure from any cause, including an abnormally placed artery to the kidney. One of the most common causes is enlargement of the prostate gland. Obstruction in one ureter, as from a stone, will affect only the kidney on that side. I would suggest a referral to a urologist for further evaluation of the prostate to ensure it isn't causing the hydronephrosis.
Avatar m tn I have no real past medical history though am bulimic, normally this causes abdo pain, not pain like this (currently waiting for treatment, so please dont lecture me).
635114 tn?1222710503 The ER doctor then did a cat scan to search for kidney stones. He found no kidney stones but did say my atrophic kidney is completely shrived and did not think it was functioning. According to llab results my gfr has decreased by 10% in a year's time. As soon as they did not see infection or kidney stones I was quickly booted out. I reviewed my urinalysis and blood work results when I got home. My ph is 6 and chloride is high at 107.
Avatar n tn Up to 20% of adults with kidney stones may have medullary sponge kidney; the corresponding figure in children is unknown. Among patients with kidney stones, hypercalciuria may occur in 40-50%, and recurrent gross hematuria may occur in 10-20%. Although no evidence indicates that risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs) is higher in patients with medullary sponge kidney, up to 5% of males and 35% of females have a UTI.
Avatar m tn These substances can create small crystals that become stones. The biggest risk factor for kidney stones is dehydration. Kidney stones may not produce symptoms until they begin to move down the tubes (ureters) through which urine empties into the bladder. When this happens, the stones can block the flow of urine out of the kidneys. This causes swelling of the kidney or kidneys, causing pain. The pain is usually severe. Kidney stones are common.
