Common Questions and Answers about Kidney infection feline

infection

Avatar f tn The cost of a feline leukemia and feline Aids test combination at my clinic is $30.00, but there are literally dozens of causes of feline weight loss that have nothing to do with feline Aids. Weight loss can be caused by congenital problems that may not appear until the cat is full grown, such as heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease and more. Almost any infectious disease can cause weight loss; even a urinary tract infection or upper respiratory infection.
Avatar m tn 18 years old a pretty up there in age. There are a multitude of possibilities. Coming to mind with a cat this age could be kidney failure. If the electrolytes are way out of balance (which happens with extreme kidney failure) seizures result. Epilepsy is also possible in which medication can be used to control seizures. In terms of cancer if its the case, I would be concerned with brain or spinal cancer. Unlike stated above, cancer is NOT contagious, not even to other cats.
Avatar n tn but your cat should be tested for these other common diseases. Feline infectious peritonitis, and Feline immunodeficiency are viral infection have no cures but can helped by boosting the immune system. Toxoplasmosis, Cryptococcis, and Bartonella can be treated with the appropriate medications.
Avatar m tn One of my good friends has a cat which is almost 16 years old. She has been in pretty decent health, other then a slight ear infection. Recently she hasn't been using the restroom in her litter box. He is wondering if she is doing this due to old age or if there is just something which would be a simple fix or something. He is afraid to take her to the vet as she isn't much of a public person and he doesnt want to scare her knowing she is getting old.
Avatar f tn He was not tested for feline heartworm disease because has not vomited at all. Here are his lab results with reference ranges: bicarbonate = 12 (13-25mEq/L range), K=5.6 (3.9-5.3mEd/L), Na= 145 (147-155 mEq/L),alb=4.0 (2.3-3.9 g/dL), nutrophil seg= 91 (35-75%), lymphocytes = 4 (20-55%), absolute neutrophil seg = 15552 (2500-12500/uL), absolute lymphocyte =688 (1500-7000/uL). He ate very well last night.
Avatar n tn The dangers are many - urine can wash backwards towards the kidneys causing infection and kidney failure. There is also the rare problem of rupture of the bladder. In any case, the cat is usually very distressed, and in considerable pain (Imagine how you would feel if you were busting to wee but couldn't) The only cure for FLUTD is veterinary treatment. Get him assessed as soon as you can to see if this is the problem.
Avatar n tn Did you take her to the ophthalmologist today? Did your regular vet test your cat for feline leukemia and feline Aids? Unequal pupil size is called anisocoria. I answered a similar question in June, 2007 which I have copied below. Please let us know what the veterinary ophthalmologist finds! Cornell College of Veterinary Medicine lists 54 causes of feline anisocoria.
Avatar f tn There is also a concern that this is related to kidney disease, a kidney infection, urinary stones etc. and all of those are urgent in requiring treatment. Here in Canada there are great third party financing companies (petcard is one of them...maybe theyre in the US too) that can help with delayed payments. I hope you can understand a vet's reluctance to create their own payment plan options. Good luck.
1513651 tn?1290387289 Be sure a blood viral panel has been done to rule out feline viruses that may or may not be present including feline leukemia, feline infectious peritonitis, feline immunodeficiency virus and toxoplasmosis.
Avatar n tn Red urine could be a urinary tract infection secondary to Feline Urologic Syndrome. He could have a seizure from a variety of causes including Fatty Liver disease if he hasn't eaten in a while, kidney disease and more.
Avatar n tn Cardiomyopathy (because he is eating less), diabetes, kidney failure, cancer, feline leukemia, feline immunodeficiency virus, feline infectious peritonitis, other systemic illness. We are talking about tests which need to be done to reach a diagnosis and treat him accordingly. Other than force feed him and maybe try appetite stimulants, your kitty will not stand a chance if you don't get him treated; that means he needs to go to the vet ASAP.
Avatar n tn We have taken him to the vet who said he has hypertension (he was already on treatment for kidney disease) and he is now on amolodipine. The vet said he has responded well to the kidney treatment and seems otherwise healthy and should adapt to his blindness in 3-4 weeks. My problem is he has given up trying to find his litter tray/food/water and howls (he did this as he went deaf but it is now more frequent).
Avatar n tn High protein wet or canned food is no longer considered the enemy for feline kidney disease, and is currently advocated in many cases. Consider adding additional cranberry extract as a single supplement because mixed products usually do not have enough, and vitamin C at 100 mg three times daily to help counter your concern about the Methionine.
473796 tn?1238293442 That much weight loss in a week can be caused by many things-to name just a few-severe infection, kidney problems, poisoning, cancer, etc. And, if you do a yahoo/google search on weight loss in cats, you'll see a whole lot more. This is such a serious problem that there is nothing you can do at home that will cure him. You should do everything in your power to keep him inside and force feed him water and food.
Avatar n tn s a number of disorders that can cause this. feline Leukemia, cardiomyopathy... there was no initial infection at all? It just happened over night? Then it's likely something along the lines of the first two. i'm assuming there's no sign of head trauma or changed behavior as well?

Avatar n tn My dog has Kidney failure. The vet put him on a few drugs and his kidney fiction kept going down. So he suggested that i put him on Azodyl and Epakitin. He has been on both since December. Since starting him on those 2, he has had a nose running problem. He had his nose scooped to see if it was a fungus or obstruction and it was neither. the specialty vet thinks it is allergies. but none of the allergy meds work. His nose runs none stop, and i have to consistently wipe it.
Avatar n tn s fate is decided. Other conditions would be kidney failure, but a cat with this illness also tends to vomit besides becoming weak and lethargic. I would go with another vet. I'm sorry about your cat. I know FIP is deadly, and I honestly hope your kitty lives a happy life no matter how long he lasts. My heart goes out to that cat. Good luck to you both.
Avatar n tn an antibiotic for secondary bacterial urinary tract infection, Amitriptyline, feline cosequin, and other medications. An appetite stimulant may also be necessary. The protocol for interstitial nephritis is worth a try as a therapeutic trial, and if it is ineffective than further diagnostics may be necessary. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs may help, as well as kitty diapers.
Avatar n tn The yellowish color makes me suspect a secondary bacterial infection to a herpes virus or a feline chlamydia infection. They also need to be dewormed and a good flea preventative (FELINE advantage/frontline) applied.
