Common Questions and Answers about Itchy skin dogs

itchy

Avatar n tn I have been dealing with itchy skin since I moved in with my fiance. He lives in an old house but has renovated the majority of it and checked for impurities in the air. I try to put lotion on to help with dry skin and we use a water softener. I do not shower in real hot water so that can be ruled out as well. We have 2 cats and 2 dogs that live in the house, but my cats never made me itch in my previous home, and the dogs no longer sleep on the bed.
Avatar n tn It really soothes the skin and has been quite helpful for my itchy dog. From your post, I assume you have ruled out fleas as a cause? That was the first thing my vet said when I took my lil guy in when he was biting off all of his fur by his tail. My vet also gave me an ointment called Dermalone. Seems to help but the oatmeal bath works better. The humidifier might help. Give it a shot. Good luck!
662972 tn?1270166301 Yeah......although I'm not a big fan of smelly dogs, I do prefer to bath my dog not TOO often. (fortunately her natural smell is sweet, and she doesn't roll in gunk!) It's nice to keep the natural oils in the skin, as there is nothing better, I believe, for keeping a dog's coat healthy, skin healthy, and fur to some extent waterproof. For dogs that have a stronger smell, or who DO roll (yuck!) they need a bath! A detergent-free dog shampoo (Oatmeal is good) is a good idea.
Avatar n tn I recommend starting by taking your dog to your veterinarian for assessment of the itch and medication recommendations. The most common reasons for itchy skin in dogs include skin infections, microscopic skin parasites such as scabies mites, food allergy, or pollen/dust allergies. Since scabies mites are difficult to find, I trial treat dogs for scabies with Revolution every 2 weeks for 3 treatments.
Avatar m tn The ears are lined with skin, so itchy ears in both dogs and cats are an extension of the same types of infections. Your veterinarian will need to make the correct diagnosis in order to properly treat the infection. However, one thing that vets don’t talk about much is why infection occurs. In holistic terms, infections are always secondary; the skin is unhealthy for some reason (often nutrition-related), and then invaders like bacteria, yeast, and fungus can get a foothold.
Avatar n tn Could be dry skin or mites, like ear mites in your dogs ears. Cats get these mites too. Check the dogs ears and if not, maybe could be simple case of dry skin or possible allergy. Check with your vet of course.
Avatar f tn Yes, you CAN turn this around......Her Iams food was not much better, but the Blue is Excellent! If she tolerates it well, then continue to use it.....I personally would try the Blue Wilderness blend instead because it is grain free..... She MUST get some moisture in her diet! Blue CANNED foods are excellent and she needs to eat canned at least 1 meal a day....Both meals would be better for awhile....All dogs need added moisture in their diets & especially skin disease dogs!
Avatar f tn I was feeling itchy after taking the dogs for a walk so i decided to jump in the shower. Well im out, and im still itchy!! Everywhere, head to toe!!! Gaaahh!! And i shower with cool water, and put lotion on, so i know my skin isn't dry.
Avatar m tn I don't know a lot about skin conditions in dogs, all I can offer is a little help, which may be no help at all. You could try your dog on a food which has no additives, colourings, preservatives, etc. I presume there are no fleas? Sometimes even if the dog itself has been treated for fleas, they can still hatch out from eggs in the dog's bedding, or even from carpets.
Avatar f tn The increased licking (which is the way dogs scratch themselves when they are itchy), suggests infection is causing itch. The skin increases pigment as a protective response due to the inflammation. Additionally, older dogs can develop flat pigmented skin areas as an aging change, but anything that is raised or bumpy raises the concern of a melanoma or other skin tumor. I recommend that you take her to your veterinarian for diagnosis and treatment.
683609 tn?1226764977 I recommend starting by taking your dog to your veterinarian for assessment of the itch and medication recommendations. The most common reasons for itchy skin in dogs include skin infections, microscopic skin parasites such as scabies or demodex mites, food allergy, or pollen/dust allergies. The red spots and hairloss/swelling of the foot the you describe are suspicous for a bacterial skin infection.
1754037 tn?1327886811 Lately I have noticed when I am around my dog I get all itchy :( & like my skin is on fire afterwards! I have never been allergic to dogs before! I can't even pet my dog anymore w/o getting a itchy reaction :( so my quest. Is WHEN UR PREG. can u develop new allergies????? Pls. Sum1 help me out here! & pls. Do not reply "call ur doctor" thnx!
Avatar f tn Skin disease in dogs is never simple. The goal required for truly successful (and rational) treatment is to get a diagnosis. Allergy is a broad category which includes several subtypes, each of which behaves and responds differently. The word allergy, therefore is not a diagnosis. Expect the workup for recurrent or non-resolving skin disease to require repeat visits and a series of tests and trials over time to sort out. At this point the dog has been seen once and treated once.
Avatar m tn Hmm... I'm not that itchy... My head was itchy a couple of days ago but after I shampoo'd that was fixed. Are fleas different from lice? So how do I confirm that they're fleas? They have patches of red dots of them. As for food, I don't think that's the case. They've been eating the same food for awhile now. Thanks for your reply.
82818 tn?1206989814 any subjection on itchy skin for small dogs. I've tried prednisone pills. All kind if shampoo's and after a couples og days she's back to rolling on the carpet and scratching. It just drives her carzy. She is a 5lds yorkie.
Avatar f tn If not that it could be something totally benign like an alopecia x which causes hair loss and pigment change in the skin, it is easily treated with an over the counter melatonin (sleep aid for humans but metabolized differently for dogs and used for skin issues). Mange usually will show other symptoms with hair loss. Demodex would explode with secondary infection, pustules etc. Sarcoptic or scabies is VERY itchy for a dog. Either way get the pup to the vet for evaluation.
Avatar n tn Malassezia, a skin yeast can also turn the skin black but this hyperpigmentation is usually secondary to skin allergies and inflammation. You may have to have this biopsied or have a skin scraping performed at your vet's for a definitive diagnosis.
Avatar n tn s kindda rare but it does happen. OCD in dogs is a bit more comon I believe. Hopefully, your cat has a skin condition which can easily be treated. OCD is much more treaky. One of the magazines I get on my email has this article which I hope you'll find interesting in case the vet tells you she has absolutely no skin conditions but her condition is behavioral. Here is the article.
874521 tn?1424116797 Food sensitivities in a dog may manifest as itchy skin, scratching at ears, shaking of the head, licking and biting at the hind quarters or feet, rubbing faces on carpeting, ear inflammations, coughing, and rarely vomiting, diarrhea, flatulence, sneezing, asthma like symptoms, behavioral changes, seizures, gagging, and vomiting. Contact Allergy Contact allergy is the least common of all the types of dog allergies.
Avatar n tn How does the rest of his coat look? Has it changed from healthy, shiny and thick to something less than that? Is he scratching more than usual? In good health otherwise? Is the black area usually covered with hair, or did the hair fall out as the skin changed color. How long did it take for the color to change, and has it affected the same amount of skin, or did it start small and grow from there? How fast?
1718792 tn?1309112963 My dog has recently been very itchy. I searched through her fur and I havent found any ticks or fleas but I did find like 3 bumps, almost like mosquito bites she has had them for over two months already.
