I've never used Novolog, but had used Humalog for quite awhile until about 6 months ago. The Humalog worked pretty well for me,but when i switched to a pump, my doctor had me try Apidra and it's really worked great. My blood sugar comes down a lot faster with the Apidra and it keeps my post meal readings pretty good too....
I have noticed the beginning stages of cellulite around the areas where I give the Novolog injection. I am a 27 year old, juvenile onset diabetic. I am thin for my height and have never had a problem with cellulite until the change in medication. Can this be linked to either of the new insulins that I am taking?
I had to go on county insurance because I lost my job, and they wont cover Humalog or Novolog. The only fast acting insulin they cover is Novolin R. The problem is that I am on an insulin pump. I know this stuff is different than what I was taking (Humalog, or the equivelent Novolog), but I don't know what it is going to do to me. My doctor isn't knowledgable and I'm stuck with her. I can't go anywhere else.

The specific ratios for each of us is best computed with the help of a CDE ... not because the math is hard (it isn't) but because of the specifics that can play a role in why our ratios would be higher/lower and what factors might suggest we need to change our ratios over time.

In general, Regular insulin starts acting much more slowly than Novolog and it has a longer "tail" of activity than Novolog.
About a month ago I started taking 36 Units of Lantus at bedtime using the Opticlik Cartridge Delivery System and during the day I use Novolog Insulin throaway Flex Pen and that is 12 units before I eat anything. I have had so much problem with that Lantus Opticlik that my Health Providers will switch me to the Levimere Flex Pen after I use up all the lantus cartridges. Is lantus a better insulin or is Levimere just as good as Lantus using it as a basal 24 Hour insulin???.
I believe if I were you, I would specifically ask his doctors why they feel this insulin is the best. There are many insulin possibilities, and I believe that the best treatment is to find the one that works for each individual the best. Without trying something different, you can't know if this is the best for him. Is he seeing a pediatric endocrinologist? If not, I would request a referral. Blood sugar spikes and drops are going to happen on occasion but don't have to be the norm.
Is he getting good results with the doses he is using? That is what matters and is a lot better determinant of whether the dose is correct than weight. If he stays within target range with infrequent highs or lows than it is working. In general the bolus dose (Humalog) will influence the blood sugar two hours after the meal and the basal (lantus) will influence the bg in between meals. You can also fast and do basal testing.
I had much better control when I was using humuln n and humulin r . I am now taking lantus and novolog .I have had to increase my dosages and am still having a hard time getting control of my blood sugars. My aic is 7.8 this quarter vs 8. last quarter. should I go back to using the older drugs that gave me better control?
Does Logan live with you? Recently gone off to college with all its attendant recreational activities and forbidden foods? I would wager that ANY 19 year old, home or away, has issues with new adulthood and new responsibilities or activities. These could be impacting his numbers.
See if he won't go back to the endo and go over what he is eating and drinking, and see if there isn't a new regimen he could adopt.
As for your second question, it depends on your particular situation. Type 2 is normally controlled through diet and exercise, and from what I understand that is the recommended to be addressed first, and insulin is given only when all else fails. Please check with your doctor or endocrinologist to work out a plan to lower your blood sugars.
What you don't say in your post is how you eat? That is what makes you gain weight, not insulin per se! Some Type 1's assume they can eat whatever they want and cover it with insulin. So they take higher doses of insulin and sometimes even have to eat more to match the insulin dose instead of the reverse. Usually Insulin Resistance is a Type II problem but Type 1's who gain weight can also develop resistance which then makes them gain more weight so it is a vicious cycle.
Yes, I am now careful even with NPH. It is not as good as Lantus and overnight is the rough time. I find NPH plus an extre evening Humalog inhjection (4 per day) works best. I have considered a pump, but 5 injections probably give me the same coverage, and are more convienient.
On another note, I am thinking of starting a disbetes support group in my area for long time type 1 diabetics. I would like to hear from anyone else who may have experience with such a group.
My last A1C was 6.5 and I know that is within the normal range but before my surgery, it was more like 5.7. I really hate to increase the Lantus (I'm down from 60 units) because I'm afraid it will cause me to eat more and gain my weight back. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice? I've been a diabetic for 26 years and have NEVER had this hard of a time and I'm terrified of causing problems with my kidneys and eyes and such.

At about week 2 or 3 I began experiencing sporadic rash in front of shins. Later, the itching and raised bumps appeared behing the knee at top of calves. Now I think it is appearing at left elbow. General feelings of itchiness accompany the outbreaks without apparent rash. I am attributing this to the new medication - Lantus - as all else remains basically stable in my life routine.
