Is lantus and levemir the same

Common Questions and Answers about Is lantus and levemir the same

lantus

Avatar n tn When you eat, you need the fast acting insulin like Novolog to act quickly to cover the meal. For some, Lantus and Levemir act the same. For me, Levemir seemed to work better in that it provided more consistency to my blood sugar levels. I like Levemir. I have switched to 2 shots per day (morning and night) instead of just taking the 1 shot at night, because the 1 shot at night may not cover the 24 hours.
1353681 tn?1387083733 Hi, I have not used lantus, but I do use levemir. Both are medium acting basal insulins. Levemir works best injected twice a day. I inject just before going to bed (22 units), and when I wake up in the morning (8 units). As you can see, I don't use the same dose morning and evening, as I find I need more basal insulin at night when I am inactive, than during the day when I am active. You will need to adjust your dosage based on your target blood sugar levels.
Avatar f tn He offered me a levemir sample he said it had less weight gain than lantus and was the same., plus the levemir company still samples, I have been on this stuff for three weeks, I don't feel sluggish after taking it, I feel great, and the pen is nice!
Avatar n tn Hi, If this low dose of lantus twice daily is working for you without any problems, there is no reason to change it. Lantus is written as once daily but many doctors(including myself) and patients split the dose because even though it is supposed to be "peakless", it is not for some people. At low doses it works especially well as a split dose. Levemir can be used instead, and is more commonly written as twice daily.
Avatar n tn I am wondering whether this is some hormone related issue ,or whether I have developed some resistance vs humalog so it doesnt work well (and the lantus is too much). I have given up using any alcohol or doing demanding exercise(jogging) for a while becuase they make the matters worse (though i really enjoy exercising). any suggestions to why this is happening or how i can take care of this would be greatly helpful.
Avatar n tn Just over the past 6 months or so, they gave him LANTUS, in addition to his meds. (Actos, Glypizide, Metaformin) He takes the meds in the morning and the LANTUS at night. Here is my problem. He has a lot of highs and lows. Just 3 weeks ago, his average was 115. This week a different story. He has been in the mid 200's and he has not changed his diet. This morning, before breakfast, his sugar was 337. He is very depressed and I feel so bad for him.
Avatar n tn Values of pH simply describe how acidic or how basic a solution is, the closer to 1 the solution is more acidic and the closer to 14 the solution is, the more basic. Your body resides at a neutral pH of 7 and the pH value of Lantus resides at about 4, which explains why it stings when it comes into contact.
Avatar n tn I also feel better during the day because the control is better between meals with the Lantus as opposed to the NPH. I will continue with thsi routine and hope that it continues to work for me. Keep your fingers crossed!
Avatar n tn I will send you the links for Lantus and Levemir later. I have reported both now and actually received a phone call from Lantus to get all pertinent info. Have to run this morning.
Avatar n tn My daughter seems to be having the same problem. She's 15 and takes 68 u of lantus at nite and supliments w/novolog pen when she's eating. They just keep increasing her dosage, but nothing seems to change. She eats pretty decently (for a teen), but she always seems to be high. I also wondered if she might be resistent to the lantus. We've tried new bottles, etc. How many units do you take per day?
Avatar n tn Do not be afraid to ask your physician to work with you to determine if the Lantus is the cause, and get you on an alternative medication if you feel it is the right solution for you. It is your diabetes and your life.
915277 tn?1252573113 Anyone out there on Lantus, and have you heard about this and will you stop using Lantus due to this news?? What bothers me about this news is that the study seems a bit shaky...but, I also feel, where there is smoke, can fire be far behind?? I, myself, am thinking of changing to Levemir, at least until the experts decide what to do. Only because, I have enough health problems, if I can save myself some anguish, I think I will...What's your take on this issue??
Avatar f tn Split the lantus into 2 doses to get better coverage. The doses may not necessarily be the same. ie. You may need a higher dose at night than in the morning. 3. Try levemir (a different long acting insulin), which is typically dosed twice a day. 4. Ask your dr to prescribe you the new insulin Tresiba. This is an ultralong acting insulin and seems to help many people with avoiding high morning sugars. 5.
Avatar n tn I am on lantus and the Novolog pen. I know when I first started lantus I got very anxious and before I had to take it, just in a dead panic. I can not fully answer your question, but I need your help. Can you ask your daughter if her lantus burns, itches, and/or does the area she injects it (arm, leg, stomach) feel heavy or like a big knot is under it?
20693191 tn?1503884408 I was waking up in the middle of the night hypoglycemic. The lowest was 2.9 and even then, in the morning, sometimes at 3.5-4.0. She decided to bring it down to 40. Not low enough. During the day my ratios went from 1:7 to 1:6. Still, my readings were too low in the morning, when waking up. She lowered it again to 36 but I had to change my ration to 1:5 I'm really not sure what the hell is going on. I'm exercising almost every day to keep my levels at a normal rate.
Avatar n tn I read some articles about this just yesterday and was surprised, for I take Lantus and have noticed no weight gain at all. So this could be a factor. However, a change in metabolism in middle age probably is the real culprit, along with possibly a slower metabolism because you are not eating. Exercise should help both problems. Start walking! Park your car further from the door, take stairs instead of elevators, etc. Or use your lunch hour to do some mild exercise right in your office.
Avatar n tn NPH and regular Humilin are older therapies. Something like Lantus or Levemir as the long acting and something like Novolog or another fast acting insulin are much more common these days. They give more consistent coverage with fewer spikes. Does he have hypoglycemia unawareness? If he's getting down to 19, it sounds like he may. That is a condition where he can't tell he's getting low. It is possible to correct the condition, you just have to work out a plan with his endo.
Avatar n tn Alternatively, talk to you dr about using levemir. This is dosed morning and night and the dose can be different for morning and evening to target optimal blood sugars. There is also a new insulin called Tresiba. Many find that this gives very stable blood sugars with less risk of lows. You may also discuss this with your Dr.
Avatar f tn My daughter is 17 and is having trouble with adjusting insulin doses...how much lantus would be a good dose to start with?
Avatar f tn I even tried Levemir, but after two days the pains came back. I stopped all shots and the pain and other symptoms went away. Is there an insulin that doest not cause stomach pain, chills, and vomiting?
Avatar n tn 7, 8 morning sugar, But now giving 25 or 26 is not giving 7 or 8 Morning to 5 pm, sugar is remaining fairly within 9 and 10 but after 5pm it is going to 12, with the same food and same 13 unit humalog. It is very confusing. Shall I start testing again from 22 units? I have lot of anxity, because of lot bad experiences. Will be OK to take anxiety medicine? I have an appointment with psychiatrist doctor to-morrow.
Avatar m tn Living a healthy lifestyle can take you off insulin dependency, that is, unless you have an existing immune system disorder and/or pancreatic issues that only medication and insulin can make up for. So, to answer your question, the answer is yes, it is possible not to have injectable insulin dependency. However, without knowing your medical history or having your medical records to review only your doctor can answer this.
Avatar n tn Levemir takes effect in 3 - 6 hours, peaks in 6 - 15 hours, and is gone within 18 - 24 hours. It is possible your Levemir dose is gone before you expect it to be, which is why your scores are now higher in the morning. Consult your endocrinologist about possibly changing the time that you take the Levemir, as that could change your scores.
Avatar m tn Is it common for someone with type 2 diabetes to be on Humalog 3X daily and Lantus 1X daily?
Avatar f tn (Hopefully you take one of the newer insulins like Lantus or Levemir because it is too hard to control blood sugar with the older insulins such as Regular or 70/30). You might also need to be starting on fast acting mealtime insulins, depending on your numbers at other times. That is much too high. If you have a fast acting insulin you can also use it to correct those morning highs. People have mixed experiences with snacks to counter DP.
Avatar n tn m on novolog and levemir (levemir is just at bedtime).
Avatar n tn I recently read on here somewhere that Lantus is usually given at bedtime because it lasts 18-24 hours and that by the time it is dwindling the dinner injection is given kind of as the bridge between the first Lantus injection and the next one the following evening. Thus making a steady regimen. However I quite frequently fail to give myself injections at dinner. I am just careless sometimes.
