Is glipizide the same as metformin

Common Questions and Answers about Is glipizide the same as metformin

glucotrol

Avatar f tn glipizide is in the Sulfonylurea class of drugs. Sulfonylurea drugs work by forcing the pancreas to make more insulin, insulin lowers BG. So if you dont eat and continue to take glipizide you run the risk of getting hypos. I say the risk as it depends what your BG is and how much glipizide lowers your BG. If you are on glipizide you should have a BG test meter to check your BG. So test to see how your BG is doing.
Avatar n tn I also take 500mg metformin after a meal(breakfast and dinner) and was advised to take 5mg glipizide before meals (breakfast and lunch) but sometimes I measure my bs before and notice it's sometimes 70-90 . A little about me: I don't eat at regular intervals, I don't snack , I have 3 meals a day . Wake up at 530 go to work, eat breakfast at 9 and then my lunch around 12 , dinner between 5-630. No snacks. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
Avatar f tn I was wondering if metformin was the same thing as glucophase? Or is it like clomid, a drug that helps produce babies. I have already taken glucophase and want to try clomid, hope someone knows, let me know.
Avatar m tn the drug glimepiride, is not making my blood sugar level lower; instead is higher 250! I am taking 2mg twice a day. My doctor says all is OK.
Avatar f tn The doctor thought it would really make no differance when I took the pills as long as I had the daily dose I decided to take the Metformin at he same times as the Glipizide ie only one with my evening meal and I am now in my second week without a night sweat which for me is remarkable. Hopefully I've stopped my sweats and I'm not screwing up somewhere else and I'll keep you posted to the results of the iron tests.
Tbd I am a type 2 diabetic as well and Metformin upsets my stomach as well along with my cholesterol medication that I take in the evening.
Avatar n tn I’ve read about Berberine, but wouldn’t use it unless the doctor okays it. From what I’ve read, Berberine is supposed to work the same/similar way as Metformin, so if Metformin isn’t working, it’s likely Berberine wouldn’t work either. You should talk to your doctor and ask for a different medication that might work better.
Avatar n tn It is also a new practice (Joslin diabetes center - one of the world'sleading diabetes management and research centres) to start all persons with diabetes on insulin instead of oral meds. Glipizide is a drug that makes your pancreas put out more insulin so it can cause lows. It can also make your pancreas burn out faster. So do research this and consider stopping this drug (in coordination with your Dr.) Metformin does not have this effect. So you can ask your Dr.
647391 tn?1275016633 "Do you take Glipizide once a day? " Yes, usually around 5-6am. I eat breakfast 30-45 minutes later. "If so, what is your blood sugars at the end of day." <120 mg/dl "I think the glipizide helps, but doesn't last the day." Don't rely on medications to do all the work for you. There there to 'help' you. Do you exercise and break sweat for 60 minutes daily? Are you at normal body weight? Are you eating a proper diabetic diet?
Tbd Recently whenever I checked my fasting blood sugar it is not below 170. I take Metformin Extended Release 1000 mg two times a day and Glipizide 10mg two times a day. Still the numbers are almost same at 170 and sometimes crossing 200. I do moderate exercise. Any suggestions?
Avatar f tn Research led by the University of Leeds has found drugs such as anti-diabetic drug Metformin and AICAR, used to combat obesity, can prevent the hepatitis C virus from replicating in the body.
Avatar f tn ve been a diabetic for 20 years. Had the usual progression from metformin, to glipizide, and finall insulin all together. I knew I wasn't doing right by my diet but it wasn't until I became a widow after 47 years that I decided to do something about it. I set myself up with a diabetes nutritionist. I'm a retired medical assistant who managed group meetings with our diabetic patients so I figured I knew just about everything about DM2. Boy, was I wrong! I learned so much from him.
Avatar n tn Hi Yes some people manage with just metformin and diet. However, and you say you're average blood sugar is about 170. This is double the normal non diabetic level. You may need to greet low carb diet and exercise as well as metformin. If this doesn't work them it may be worth considering other meds.
2053416 tn?1330411192 Is there another generation 1 or 2 diabetes medicine that I can take with the glipizide that will work as good as the actos did and not cost so much? I would like to get off the glumetza. I am really thinking about asking the doctor to put me back on insulin (novolin R). Thank you for your input.
Avatar f tn I was already maxed out on Glipizide, Metformin, and Actos as well. Post treatment, I continue to use the oral drugs, but no longer require *any* insulin… pretty cool stuff.
Avatar f tn I have taken them apart, they still have powder in them. Also since the h pylori and increased metformin my blood sugar testing has gone to as high as 459. Went to dr and he put me on insulin. This has gradually brought blood sugars down to 114 and 250. What do i do?
Avatar f tn I have been on 2500 mg of Metformin for 13 years now due to being insulin resistant BC of Polycystic ovarian syndrome. Have been on several other medications for insulin resistance that did not work. The Metformin doesn't really work but works better than anything else I've ever been on. My sugar still runs 200 after fasting for 12 hours. Are there any tests that can be done to tell if you really need insulin?
Avatar f tn I know ehat u r going through. I hsve the same problem and I feel the same way. I just feel dummed.
317787 tn?1473358451 While that calmed down a bit I continued to feel nauseated and started to have muscle cramps in my shin, rapid heart rate, feeling out a breath, etc. I looked up adverse reactions to metformin on WebMd and saw that many sx were the same as what I was experiencing. My question is this. Is it safe to take Metformin when a person has cirrhosis? I am thinking of stopping the metformin; controlling my sugar level with diet and a supplement called Nopal cactus.

757137 tn?1347196453 ), Metformin and Glyburide. The culprit looked like Metformin to me, but I could not get him to discuss the problem with his diatetes specialist. He kept saying it would go away. About a year ago he developed extreme pain and I got him to the hospital by ambulance. He had a burst appendix. The surgeon described what he found. There was extreme inflammation and a necrotic mass.
Avatar f tn will continue taking metformin as usual and take the glipizide with at my morning break at work with my breakfast and take the pm metformin before dinner. she thinks this might help level things out. at this point i don't feel happy about taking so much meds, but until i can add more excerise into my daily choires i don't have much choice. she suggested trying to walk a little each day even if i don't do long distance. if my knee holds out, then i'm good to go.
