is famvir better than valtrex

I am also on Valtrex and I continue to get outbreaks but they last for a few days and then go away for weeks, sometimes months before I get another. My spouse who also has herpes does not take an antiviral so that is why I believe I still get my outbreaks. Are you still engaging in intercourse while having outbreaks, maybe that is whey they aren't getting better. Also, I'm not sure what famvir is, but maybe it is stronger than Valtrex and will help you.

Has anyone had better results with Famvir? And does it help suppress transmission like Valtrex does? My Dr thinks the Valtrex might be causing my hair loss so I am switching....

I am just hesitant to keep taking it. Is Acyclovir or famvir the same? The nurse told me that all the drugs are pretty much the same. Thanks for your help!

t willing to prescribe acyclovir instead to see if you do better on that, perhaps time to find a different gyn unfortunately. Even though famvir is a generic now, it's still higher priced and you have to take it more often than valtrex so not really worth it unless you are one of the folks who just seems to do better on it.

Famvir, acyclovir and valtrex all work about the same. Some folks do respond better to one than the other but in general if one isn't working for you, it's because it's not all a herpes related issue going on.

The NEW Doctor tells me that the only difference between taking Valtrex (what I have been taking) to Acyclovir (What they now want to prescribe) is the number of times a day you take it. I looked online...they say that Valtrex does a better job of helping you not to transmit the virus (most of this information provided by GlaxoSmithKline of course). The supression study has them identical. I am in a relationship where I really enjoy our "personal time".

i know that valtrex and famvir are different family of anti-viral's. has anyone had poor results with valtrex and had to change to famvir? i don't seem to be responding to valtrex or acyclovir so i might change.

Some folks do not tolerate valtrex for whatever reason. If you think you are having more ob's while on valtrex or "worse" ob's - the first thing I recommend is going to be seen when you have symptoms to make sure that it's only herpes going on. If you picked the right gender when you registered here then you are female and for us gals - many, many things can go on down yonder to further complicate our herpes/mimick herpes ob's.

acyclovir cream isn't very effective in general. it is actually recommended more so for oral herpes than genital herpes though it's usefulness is limited for both. Oral antivirals in the cold sore doses work better. plenty of cheaper and better topicals to apply to a cold sore for pain relief than acyclovir. Ask your provider for a prescription for oral acyclovir, famvir or valtrex in the cold sore doses and use an otc pain relief topical instead if the cold sore hurts.

Thanks Grace, that's what I was thinking but it's nice to have a confirmation. I'm actually taking 200mg Acyclovir 4x per day (simply because that's what my pharmacy had available). Very inconvenient, but much less expensive than Valtrex. So, it sounds like if I take the Acyclovir as directed it will be as effective as Valtrex at reducing the risk of transmission.

After 10 days on valtrex I switched to suppressive dose of famvir. While on famvir I had some occasional pain and redness. I told my GCP and urologist about my response to valtrex and each said that was unusual. I took another blood test at 9 and 11 weeks and still negative. So my GCP and urologist convinced med to stop taking famvir.

I was on valtrex for awhile and my hair was thinning so now I am on Famvir I was wondering if anyone has noticed hair loss with this drug? And is hair loss common with antivirals?

you might want to switch from famvir to valtrex - probably the 1gm daily dose or even the 500mg 2x/day dose and see if that works better for you. are you on steroids for your cf?

Valtrex no longer is making a different as it is better and now down to only 1 sore. However, this is day 45, it started on October 1st and is itchy, tingly, and uncomfortable. I was swabbed and had another blood test, I came back negative for everything AGAIN. (All STDS, HAV, HPV, bacterial infection and yeast infection-all negative.) My boyfriend had already tested positive for HSV 1. Is it possible I really don't have herpes? Or do I and it won't show up on tests?

is valtrex the only medicine that works for genital herpes? obviously nothing can get rid of it but is that the only medicine scientifically proven to help ?

if you are the exception to the rule, trying famvir which works differently than valtrex/acyclovir might be worthwhile to give you a break from symptoms if this is all herpes related. herpes igm testing isn't recommended and you wasted your money having it done. obviously this isn't a newly acquired infection either which is 1 more reason not to have had it done. whatever your igm results, ignore them as they are meaningless.

now I read that this seems to be more common aide effect than manufacture is aware of. Have read that valtrex also has the same side effect. how about Famvir? This is soo depressing and is the hair loss permanent?

You have to take it twice a day, but it may not have the same effects as Valtrex does. There is also Famvir that you could try. Talk to your doctor about it.
