Is bacterial pneumonia contagious lungs

Common Questions and Answers about Is bacterial pneumonia contagious lungs

pneumonia

Avatar n tn As silverfox stated, "this depends". Pneumonia signifies fluid in the lungs. If the fluid is due to an active bacterial infection (yellowish color of expectorant) you can endanger others by coughing and aerosolizing bacteria. As a rule of thumb, you will be contagious until the expectorant disappears or becomes colorless. It is best to stay away from the eldery or those with compromised immune systems while experiencing active bacterial pneumonia.
Avatar m tn These complications can include dehydration, ear or sinus infections, and bacterial or viral pneumonia, which can fill the air sacs in the lungs with pus or fluid, making it difficult to breathe and depriving older patients of adequate oxygen. In some cases, pneumonia may be asymptomatic, but it is still contagious if it results from a bacterial or viral infection.
Avatar f tn that they take antibiotics for is due to a primary virus that gave them the secondary infection. So, a cold --- that IS contagious that caused 'gunk' to get thick in sinuses, bronchial tubes or lungs and then that festered into an infection that you need antibiotics to treat. The initial virus is contagious and for how long varies. Usually a week, I'd say.
Avatar n tn You have got to get up and move around to prevent it. If you do have pneumonia in your lungs you will need pretty powerful antibiotics so don't hesitate to see a doctor.
Avatar f tn These microorganisms usually enter the body through mouth, nose and eyes, and then infect the lungs, especially the air sacs or alveoli of the lungs. Pneumonia is more commonly found to affect the lower lobes of the lungs. Apart from microorganisms, pneumonia can also be caused by any injury or damage to the lungs, caused by the exposure to certain chemicals and radiation. So, many times, people receiving aspiration or radiation therapy can too get pneumonia". This is the link: http://www.
242516 tn?1368223905 m sure you have a friend who has the sniffles, fever, chills, aches and pains of a viral upper respiratory infection. This is different from a bacterial infection such as sinusitis, bronchitis, or pneumonia. A viral infection doesn't improve with antibiotics as these infections do. A virus hijacks your own body's healthy cells and uses it to reproduce and spread. A bacteria is its own living cell and multiplies and spreads on its own and is easier to destroy in that process.
Avatar m tn You can also get bacterial pneumonia as a secondary infection. Bacterial pneumonia is usually caused by a bacteria called Streptococcus pneumoniae. It is a bacteria that can be in the throat or respiratory tract in small numbers and it can be normal bacteria until someone gets run down due to a viral infection, fungal infection or other reasons. Then the Streptococcus bacteria can take over the lungs and cause a bad infection. It is treatable with antibiotics.

Avatar n tn Pneumonia is defined as an inflammatory condition of the lungs. It does not "get into the blood". The causative agent may be viral, bacterial or chemical. If it is viral some studies suggest several grams of vitamin C a day will be helpful. Otherwise, as allmymarbles suggested, if the etiology is viral treatment is supportive.
Avatar m tn Well pneumonia is not an STD. You don't get it that way. Maybe you are worried about a urinary tract infection? Generally, Strep. pneumoniae it the " classic" type of bacteria for pneumonia but there are other bacteria that can cause pneumonia. So if you have frequent urination that is hard to go and and especially if it burns when you go that could be a sign of a urinary tract infection. If it is gone then I wouldn't worry about it.
Avatar n tn 2) that the infection resides elsewhere in the body, such as an abscess in the heart or even in the lungs, and is recurrently ‘seeding’ bacteria to the lungs; and 3) that the pneumonia is a non-infectious process, which is much less likely. At this point, it would be wise to consult with a pediatric infectious disease specialist. This might be a time to hold the antibiotics and repeat comprehensive blood and urine cultures.
Avatar m tn My mother has a Bacterial blood infection from Influenza A. She's highly contagious. Will I need a flu shot? It says online that you can't be around it if you have any lung diseases or lung damage. I had two surgeries last year from a collapsed lung, does this count? I would like to visit her. Thanks for any answers!
Avatar f tn My baby has been diagnosed with pneumonia, a week ago. She still acts as if she is in pain, and has short rapid breaths. She is on Zeniquin, and a pain med. She was originally in an oxygen kennel for 2 days, and was pretty good when we brought her home. Now it seems like she gets these bouts of gasping for air, her gums are still pink. I am startin to think her vets arent sure what is wrong with her.
Avatar f tn t working you can find out if the bacteria is resistant to what you took or if something else is going on or if there is more than one infection. So that is what I would do. Usually, yellow crusty itchy things are staphlococcus infections. But, sometimes it is hard to tell by color alone. So, don't touch the area or you can spread it easily. Wash you hands. You can put triple antibiotic ointment on it on the outside for now.
Avatar n tn no, severe lung infections such as pneumonia or acute (bacterial) bronchitis can take many weeks to heal up from. Just watch out for relapses in symptoms of infections, such as fever and increasing shortness of breath.
Avatar n tn You could have a secondary bacterial infection that you can get after viral pneumonia that is called walking pneumonia and is caused by either bacteria called Mycoplasma or Chlamydia pneumoniae. "Walking" pneumonia gives you a low grade fever, tiredness, dry hacking cough, pain in the ribs area. They can check for these by testing and culture. It is important for you to get your lungs listened to to make sure you are ok.
Avatar n tn are all spots on the lungs cancer? can bronchitis leave scar tissue on the lungs?
Avatar f tn What happens a lot with people that get a virus like a cold or sore throat is that they get a secondary infection that is bacterial after the fact. All those things with "itis" in it like sinusitis, bronchitis, etc. Pneumonia is another. They are secondary infections in that the person was sick first and because say mucus gets trapped in the airway, it festers, bacteria grows. Yuck, right? Then you need antibiotics. Other things like strep throat is contagious.
Avatar f tn will work rapidly and he will feel much better shortly. Bacterial pneumonia is common after any trauma to the chest, as the lungs canot move properly due to the trauma, and fluid develpos which is breeding grond for bacteria.
2061712 tn?1355244263 Pneumonia doesnt just develop overnight its an untreated bacterial infection that settles in your lungs. If you develop a fever or have trouble breathing make sure to get checked out.
Avatar n tn Thanks, yllas. what did your doctor say - is it curable? is it contagious? I don't recall having pneumonia or whooping cough before. my brother had bronchopneumonia when he was 3 years. but he seems to be in perfect health, in fact his xray result last year was clear. I really worried that his might affect my pre employment. I already signed my probationary contract but unfavorable medical results may be grounds for them to revoke my contract.
Avatar m tn ve had bad bacterial bronchial infections that required a lot of prednisone plus antibiotics to get my lungs better again. Even after the fever is gone, it took many weeks for the lungs to heal.
Avatar f tn Good morning I'm being treated for pneumonia just started antibiotics last nite feeling a lol worse off but my question is walking pneumonia contagious......it's funny but ct images showed fluid on right lung and I have side pain ouchee! But now more symptoms are appearing.
437079 tn?1222438840 Infiltrates on a xray usually means that the air sacs are filled with fluid, cells, bacteria, or other substance. Pneumonia is an example , also fluid build up from CHF (congestive heart failure) can present as infiltrates from what I remember. I know that there are other reasons. What did your doc say Diva? Again keeping you in my thoughts..
