Once it runs out, assess your skin- do you really need to keep taking it?? If this answer is a yes, refill the prescription and keep taking the Differin(In relation to taking it "permanently", i recommend doing this self- assessment everytime you fill the prescription, no matter how long you have been using it). If you think no, then try just using the cream without the antiobiotics. If you are seeing your skin remain clear with just the cream, continue using that.
The best way to treat this is with a course of oral antibiotics such as Oxytetracycline to kill acne-causing bacteria. In addition use a topical retinoid cream called Differin (adapalene) which is very good at clearing up the redness and soreness. Use a bland, soap-free cleanser to minimise irritation. I recommend Effaclar or Physiological Cleansing Gel by La Roche-Posay.
Find a more sympathetic doctor. If untreated, acne can cause physical and psychological scars.
Instead use bland cosmetics such as those by La Roche-Posay. The Rosaliac cleanser is good for calming sensitized skin and rashes. Rather than trying "anything and everything" use one simple regime. It is better to perserve with one regime for an adequate trial than constantly switch products before they've had time to work.

I too suffer from a very very similar ailment as the one posted here. the only difference is that the "boils" I experience occur in the exact same spot everytime,and at the end of its course,leaves behind a perfectly circular scabbing,that is flaky and extremely itchy,except ive noticed the itchiness isn't from the boil itself but the skin surrounding it.

It is as if the condition is immune to the medication. The legs and arms are covered with what look like insect bites 5-10 mm in size and scratched open in the center. The worst areas are on the back of the upper thigh where the skin is red and thickened 10 cm in size. Basically dry but will weep either blood or clear liquid. Ok so I have been prescribed differin gel for "acne" problems. I recently had a huge one with deep cyst (when i touch it i can feel hardness under the skin)...then it formed a white head and oozed a lot of pus (and some blood) after which it stopped being painful. My question is can I still keep on applying differin gel on top of the acne even though it's "broken" skin? The differin seems to help calm the inflammation pretty quick and dry it out...

One last thing I wanted to mention was that swollen ankles seems to be a more common sx with recovering addicts, but your husband has other issues as well, any other reason could result in swollen ankles. Another thing is his age, he is the same age as I am.
