I jammed my finger on wed. and have been unable to see a doctor due to lack of insurance. My finger bends (not completely or with ease) and the swelling went down considerably after the first day. However there is a little numbness and swelling and the underside of the middle knuckle (the one that i believe got the blow) is very purple and bruised. Do i need to just relax and give it time or should i seek out a free clinic.

I jammed my middle finger 5 weeks ago. The pain went away from the middle of the finger but the top portion I still feel pain when I lift something, or when I put pressure against the top of it. I have attached a picture and circled the part that hurts. Thanks!

Hi, I have swelling in my pinky finger for about 2 - 3 months. If i bump my pinky it is very sore by the middle joint even if I touch it.I went to an orthopedic hand specialist and he asked if I jammed my finger. I explained to him that I didn't jam my finger. He took x-rays and said it wasn't dislocated.He then came back into the room and said I probably jammed my pinky and just don't remember. I know I would remember jamming my finger as I have done that in the past.

I jammed my left (non-dominant) pinky finger and now the top of the finger is bent down towards my palm (from the top knuckle). A little discomfort in palm and top of hand. The bent portion above the top knuckle refuses to go back into place. Could it be broken? If jammed and I splint it, will it correct itself eventually? Five days ago my left ring finger was injured from catching a football just for fun not playing the actual sport. I had it checked at an ER but they weren't exactly sure if it was fractured and splinted my finger. I did see my family doctor who also got the same set of xrays and he said yes it is cracked but a few days later phoned to say no it isn't. Said to remove the splint and exercise it. If it doesnt get better, go get an x-ray just to make sure. Also, if you cant possibly extend your finger of the knuckle your jammed without serious pain, it might be broken. The black and blue mark will get worse as the days go by but ice it tonight really good and see what happens tomorrow. If it burns and stings real bad it might be broken.

About two months ago my 11 year old boy complained of finger tip pain (his right middle finger tip). He can not recalled if he jammed his finger tip. Now the fingernail has a small hole in it and the nail felt soft. He is physically fine and there is no pain in the indicated finger. Please advise.

So about two months ago, I jammed my finger by playing basketball. I don't know how bad the jam was as I could not get an MRI, only an X-ray. any amount of swelling in a small joint such as a finger joint can cause quite a bit of discomfort. It sounds like you "jammed" the joint(s). It can take a long time to resolve. Like 6-9 months. You could try soaking it in hot water to loosen things up and try to pull and put tension on the finger to loosen up the joint. Pull the finger slowly, steadily, and gently straight out. I have found this can help loosen it up and relieve some pressure in the joint.
