Common Questions and Answers about Infection at nail bed

infection

Avatar f tn ve been getting my nails done with acrylics and gels for numerous years but now have what appears to be an infection in many of my nails and they are separaed from the nail bed. Nothing I've tried seems to work. Should I have the nails cut down? See a dermatologist? Kindly advise.
Avatar m tn He put the nail back into place, however the nail bed (?) is still exposed. Should he go to a doctor and get stitches for the injury? See photo: [IMG]http://i51.tinypic.com/2nbd2k7.
Avatar f tn I was cutting my cat's nails, and I saw that his nail bed was black. This is the case for half of his claws on his front, left paw and for most of his nails on his rear, left paw. Is it an infection and should I take him to the vet? Is it serious? He is 8 years old now and I'm really worried.
Avatar n tn anyone? hello?
Avatar f tn In theory yes you can get a fungal type infection under nail varnish but you would have to be pretty negligent to the state of your fingers to do so. If you are wearing several layers of varnish and it starts lifting instead of just flaking off it would be a prime site for an infection, most peoples varnish just flakes off and even if it did start lifting most people would just strip off the whole varnish. So the chances are pretty rare.
Avatar n tn Her thumb nail has separated from the cuticle area and now about half of the nail is missing and there is only nail bed. Nothing seems to be growing in at the cuticle and it has been a month since the infection. She has another appointment with a dermatologist, but I am concerned that the nail has not begun to grow back even though the infection is long gone.
Avatar m tn There is no treatment that will reattach the nail to the nail bed, just have to wait for a new nail to grow. Do not insert acid under your nail as this can lead to further complications such as a sub-ungal ulcer. I would not waste your time seeing a dermatologist instead go to a foot professional (podiatrist), they will be able to cut your nail so that it doesnt catch on clothing, assess if you have a fungal infection and provide you will the best treatment for it.
Avatar n tn Check with a surgeon if your nail bed is not disturbed and injured. If your nail bed is fine you will get back the nail or else you have to get it repaired and follow all proper instructions to get a new proper nail. If the repair is going naturally and perfectly your nail will get back, keep it open and apply antibiotic ointment like neosporin or bactroban (mupirocin). If there are any signs of infection then follow up with a physician. Take care!
Avatar m tn If fungal infection is present , the nail may detach from the nail bed which is not true in your case. So give this quite some time. Do not forcibly manipulate the nail to avoid injuring the area.
Avatar n tn You take a needle or pin and heat it red hot and sizzle through the middle of the nail, but NOT into the bed. The you gently press and the blood will come out. Otherwise you will always lose the nail. You can also use a dental drill, or a small model drill, but the heated pin is the best way. You have some tissue damage, and have to look for infection. I would have an R.N. or a physician's assistant look at it.
Avatar n tn m ocd and keep thinking I might have touched the lid somehow with the wipe. I did notice my nail was a little red under the bed ( I kept pulling it back to look to see if I had any cut there. The CDC and other hep advisors thought there wasn't risk. what's my risk?
Avatar m tn Onychomycosis or tinea unguium is a fungal infection of the nail bed, matrix or plate. Toenails are affected more often than fingernails and occurs primarily in adults, most commonly after 60 years of age. Treatment for a fungal nail infection includes using medications, taking steps to prevent the infection from returning, and removing the affected nail. However, treatment does not work for 20% to 25% of people with the condition.
Avatar m tn I have a missing finger nail it recently came off... and the bed of my nail is fully exposed i.e no nail... it is a bit red and sore and sometimes bleeds..... Yesterday i fingered a CSw. I.e i put the finger with no nail in her vagina for a while. My question is... assuming she had HIV and my finger has no nail and sore and bleeding a bit (not at time of exposure) would this pose any hiv risk.... can it be transmitted through the missing nail area.... note that it does bleed sometimes .
Avatar n tn Hello, You seem to be having onychomadesis which is separation and falling off of a nail from the nail bed. Common causes are trauma to the nail, localized infection, nail fungi, allergy to nail enhancement products or some systemic illnesses. My sincere advice is to consult a dermatologist and get a histopathological examination, culture and biopsy of the skin around the nails and the nails done. Hope it helps. Take care and regards.
Avatar n tn I have a painful bump on my left big toe, located at the bottom corner of the nail (the the skin running along the bottom side of the nail bed is swollen also, but mostly it is the largest on the bottom right side of the nail). The nail has not grown for at least three and a half months (I happened to have a pedicure at that time, and have since had to trim all my other toe nails but this one isn't growing longer at all.
Avatar m tn About 6 months ago I noticed that 1 of my fingernails started to yellow in the corners at the distal part of my nail, at the site of yellowing the nail also got hardened. With time, the same happened in some of my other fingernails ( but stayed well demarcated at the corners. Also, both my toenails show a slow regression in the line where the nail is attached to the nail bed. Lastly, about a month ago the ring fingers in both my hands show fine pitting, 5-6 pits per nail, needle head size.
Avatar f tn It looks like pitted lateral lines across the nail, but not along the length of the nail. The nail bed on the anterior edge has slightly thickened and recedes over time, too. Over time, the putting has come and gone, and the nail seems to be really hard and brittle. The symptoms spread to my left hand, but only the first finger, a year or two later. Same appearance.
1430129 tn?1283281475 Hello, The symptoms are suggestive of fungal infection of the nail. In onychomycosis(nail fungal infection) nail plate can have a thickened, yellow, or cloudy appearance. The nails can become rough and crumbly, or can separate from the nail bed. Topical and oral antifungals are needed which are available under prescription. My sincere advice would be to consult a dermatologist and get a KOH examination of the nail and skin specimen done to confirm the diagnosis.

Avatar f tn A subungual hematoma is a collection of blood underneath a fingernail which sometimes results from a traumatic injury. A laceration of the nail bed causes bleeding, hence, the black discoloration. Usually, the new nail pushes the old nail out. Subungual hematomas typically heal without incident. It is important to keep the area clean and dry to prevent infection. Take care and keep us posted.
Avatar n tn Ive got one to going to the doctors tomorrow, how did you get on?
Avatar f tn my middle toe nail has black patches near the nail bed. My beautician at first thought it a bruise, but 5 months later it has not got any better, nor grown ou with the nail. Therefore it must be under the nail. Is this a fungus of some sort? How should I treat it?
Avatar n tn I had a mishap at work in which my nail of my third finger was pulled out from under the cuticle area, but left attached to the nail bed. Emergency Doctor froze my finger, removed the nail surgically, stitched my fingertip back together, then reinserted the 'dead' nail (after thorough clean/disinfect) and stitched it in place to protect the nail bed and serve as a semi soft splint. I am on day 11 since my accident, and have been diligent in the care of my finger.
