or for people who suffer very hard to treat migraines or chronic migraines, injections. But, good news!! If you actually have a prescription for IMITREX then even their regular tablet is quick dissolve... just make sure that the pharmacy doesn't try to give you a generic version of the sumatriptan in a non-quick dissolve tablet instead of the brand-name imitrex version which automatically comes in a quick dissolve tablet. Imitrex ALSO comes in a nasal spray and an injection.
That is why you need to get a triptan in either a nasal spray or a quick dissolve tablet, such as zomig nasal spray or imitrex nasal spray or maxalt quick dissolve tablets. There is also a injection that would be fast acting too... but, they only prescribe the injection in very severe cases since no one wants to use an injection, but it is called a sumatriptan pen (because the needle sort of looks like a pen).
The fastest that Zomig Nasal Spray can work is 10 minutes.
I posted a question asking if zomig knocked other people out.... or if anyone found any sort of knock-out side-effects with triptans...
I totally feel out of it after I take my triptans... it takes the pain away... but I am out of it... tired... fatigued... and even confused sometimes for hours after the migraine... sometimes for the rest of the day!!!
Could be migraines. Does it throb right behind your left eye??? I've had migraines for years (comes with having 4 kids I think-ha); the only meds that help relieve most of the pain are Zomig (really expensive, but no generic version yet) and Meloxicam (generic for Mobic) - both pills taken together usually decrease pain within an hour or two. Hope this helps. My doc also suggested Imitrex when I can't afford the Zomig anymore.
If it's a true migraine, then a triptan will work, like Zomig or Imitrex. I take Zomig (I get migraines about 3-5 times a year) and Zomig knocks it out. Ironically, Norco used to give me headaches and then unfortunately, I became accustomed to them and addicted to them...... Now I am on day 14 with no opiates and I am still not quite well, but better each day. I won't be touching those demonic yellow pills anymore. Fortunately, my pain level is manageable as well.

I am so sorry to hear how severely your migraines have effected your life and well-being. Migraines can be very disabling, especially when they are out of control.
I have chronic migraines, that means I have at least 15 migraines a month. Depending on the month, I might get them daily or I might only have around 15.
then my Dr put me on fioricet and I think it works better than all the other ones I have tryed, plus unlike IMITREX ,ZOMIG and MAXXOLT you can take it up to 6 times per day! Also my Aunt has terrible migraines all the time she was taking all the imitrex she could get was put on a muscle relaxer called soma , and her headaches are much easier to deal with!!

The most effective triptans are the quick-absorbing triptans, such as Zomig Nasal Spray, Maxalt-MLTs, or Imitrex Injection. Imitrex Injection is rarely used since it is an injection, but Zomig Nasap Spray or Maxalt-MLTs are simple to take and usually work for most people. Sometimes people use a medication called Naproxen in combination with their triptans, and that works very well.
A Triptan drug (Imitrex, Zomig) is about the only thing that works and yes, they are very expensive. I just paid $225.00 for 9 pills yesterday. I get the 100mg. so that I can cut them in half and make eighteen 15 mg. pills. If I am wise and take one as soon as I feel one coming on, I can stop it with one half of the pill. Sometimes it doesn't work and I have to take the other half. That's just one way of stretching them.
I'm a 21 year old, healthy female. I have had 1 blood test which has shown that I have low B12 and subsequently had a RBC count with results pending. I am treating this with a multivitamin which contains 100mcg Vit B12. No other medications.
I've been having "headaches" very frequently for the last 4-5 months. I have a "normal" headache almost every day (normal = bearable; mild pain: 5/10). Also I've had a five really bad headaches (9-10/10).
I always have a visual aura and then I lose vision in my left eye. I have tried imitrex, zomig and I am currently on topomax. June 2006 I had sudden left sided weakness. my arm and leg. I felt rather confused a little disoriented, but that didn't last long. the weakness has persisted. I have had about six MRI done. Mostly normal I have a small Arnold-Chiari variant. I work full time at the local hospital. I work closely with many doctors, they all can't give ma any definite answers.
t get imitrex tablets, get the imitrex or generic nasal spray or imitrex or generic injection OR treximex tablets but NOT imitrex tablets.
- Zolmitriptan. brand name Zomig. this is what i use. (although i have used all of them at some point) don't get the tablets... like imitrex, the tablets don't work. But, the nasal spray DOES work incredibly well and this is what is usually prescribed anyway.
- Almotriptan. brand name Axert. a very powerful triptan tablet.
These are things like Imitrex, Zomig, Relpax, etc. If you take one at the first sign of a migraine they can often head it off at the pass. They also can treat other symptoms that accompany migraine: sensitivity to light and sound, nausea, etc. I hope that you find a good doctor and that you find some good relief.
It also would be a good idea to have an abortive on hand like one of the triptans. These include Imitrex, Zomig, etc. If you take one of these when you feel a migraine coming on, you can usually head it off at the pass. They also treat the symptoms that accompany migraine like light and sound sensitivity, nausea, etc. Some foods can trigger migraines as well. Too much caffeine can be a big one for some people.
