Imitrex how it works

Common Questions and Answers about Imitrex how it works

imitrex

Avatar m tn I will talk more about this in a little bit to answer your question about what it does and how it works... but I have to get into what happens during a migraine so it's a bit of a long answer so first I'll answer a few more of your other questions... I get migraines as well and although I do not take imitrex, I to take a triptan, which is what imitrex is. The triptan that I take is called zomig, and I take a nasal spray version.
768044 tn?1294223436 Has anyone else here tried Imitrex Injection? How did you find using the injection pen? Was it easy to learn how to use? Did you find it worked better then the other triptans? Thanks to anyone that answers who has any experience... or even anyone who has just been given a shot of Imitrex in the hospital before, how was that?
Avatar n tn it had no opiates in it at all no but i really dont know anything about it just looked it up online and here is a link that will tell you anything you wanna know about it hope this helps http://www.drugs.com/fiorinal.
Avatar f tn I am so sorry for what you have been going through. I started having migraines when I was 23. They couldn't diagnose me for 8 years because I had no migraine and had vomiting all night (only at night) and abdominal pain. The neurologist did an electroencephalogram and found it was a migraine. I was put on doxepin for a year and that helped but then it didn't work so they finally put me on Klonopin and it went away but then in my 30's it changed to severe migraine and auras.
Avatar f tn I have taken Imitrex and it is not addictive. It really works to. Please don't drive or anything until you know how it affects you. It is very expensive by the way.
656111 tn?1273820739 I asked why and told me that insurance will only pay only ONE package - any kind of migraine medication per month so then I asked how much is it as I was willing to pay for it BUT when she said it was $200 around that. I was like oh my gosh, you got to be kidding... no way I'm going to pay that much and told her forget about that prescription. I called my doc and told him about insurance etc so he called in Vicodin. I get migraines usually one to three times a week.
1056589 tn?1273747102 Do not take Imitrex if you have underlying cardiovascular diseases, if you have uncontrolled hypertension, if you are taking MAO-A antidepressants or and do not take Imitrex if you have severe hepatic impairment. It is not suggested that you take Imitrex at the same time as any other prescription acute migraine medication such as another triptan or any ergot-type medication (ergot medications were the first line of acute therapy in migraine headache prior to the invention of triptans).
507619 tn?1211845850 codeine doesn't really take away migraines....it may MASK the symptoms/pain briefly....sometimes doesn't even do that....but it usually makes them worse....i had been a migraine sufferer for 20 years....there are very specific migraine meds out there if you have TRUE migraines (imitrex, relpax, all that kinda stuff)....i got started on the hydros due to chronic daily tension headaches but never really used the hydros for my migraines....only used the prescribed migraine med....
1079216 tn?1258200805 Oh cadmoff, I'm so sorry to hear that things are so bad right now!! At least you have switched medications now so you are off the old ones that weren't working, so maybe now the new ones will work. The Fioricet with Codeine should probably work better then the regular Fioricet, since Codeine is an opiate and opiates tend to be very strong pain killers. I hope that it works better for you than the regular Fioricet. Neurotin is a very powerful pain preventative medication.
Avatar f tn I'm not sure but do you feel like the imitrex works for your migraine?I take "midrin" and it doesn't help at all.....
Avatar f tn also, if someone offered you a medication that worked as well as Imitrex, you would probably use it when you were in pain as a substitute for Imitrex... which all shows that Imitrex is in no way addictive. As for physical dependency... well, I have heard of the triptan Maxalt causing rebound headaches, which could be considered a type of physical dependency maybe... but, out of all of the triptans, the ONLY triptan that has shown this is Maxalt, not Imitrex.
Avatar n tn Ask your doctor for Imitrex 100mg, is not narcotic, non addictive and it takes away your migraine right away. I'm also a migraine surferer and have tried a lot of medications and Imitrex works wonders.
Avatar f tn The palpitations started getting worse, but I had now talked myself into having a fear of imitrex (that it would kill me). One night to avoid the ER with a terrible migraine I broke down and took the imitrex shot. Within seconds the palpitations stopped, and did not pick back up again for about 3 days. That was the last time I had taken imitrex and it's been 3 full months now with no migraine medications, only Advil. Thankfully I started Cranio Sacral which reduced the migraines.
Avatar f tn If you are diagnosed at any time with heart disease or stroke, you do need to stop taking imitrex. Also, it is important to avoid taking it with any other medication that may cause blood vessel constriction, such as the common cold medication phenylephrine, which is found in for example advil cold etc. However, age-appropriate screening for risk factors for stroke and heart disease (for example, cholesterol levels, blood sugar) is important regardless of use of imitrex.
Avatar f tn If so, what do you take for them, and what do you recommend in terms of therapy and management suggestions? Imitrex really works for me, but if it is causing other problems I may have to find alternatives. Any suggestions? Thank you so much in advance.
709686 tn?1277432159 triptan???? not sure of those drugs...do u mean tricyclics??? i am glad the imitrex helped..what ever works and keep ur taper on track is great//when is ur QUIT day?
Avatar m tn t been diagnosed you should see a neurologist and have them do an EEG and/or CT scan or MRI. The Imitrex works for me but sometimes you have to take another pill or try a higher dose. If they are every day then somethink like depakote or another med to calm the nerves may work. If none of these work you can try a intravenious dose of magnesium. This works for some people. Let me know how you do and if you need more info.
Avatar n tn Yes, let me know what the doctor says even though I been to neurologists and headache specialists they just don't know! thank God for the imitrex i mean it goes away after 15 minutes of taking it, but how much longer do i have to take this for? It can't be that safe to keep taking this. Did you try 100mg's of imitrex? That's what works for me I had tried 50 and it didn nothing once I got 100 it was a whole new world.
Avatar f tn I know I have Imitrex and I'm on Topamax for preventative. This is more tension than migraine...it's almost as painful, but different type of pain. And the Imitrex only works if it's a true migraine and I've wasted the last 3 Imitrex hoping it would help, and those suckers aren't cheap!!! But I REALLY appreciate the advice....I really do.
768044 tn?1294223436 But, if I take it at the first signs of a migraine, then it works almost instantly it feels like. The reason why it works so fast is because of what amazing bioavailability it has @ 102%, that means that Zomig Nasal Spray works better than Zomig by intravenous injection. Most oral triptans have a bioavailability of around 40% (so they work about half as fast and as strong as they would by intravenous injection) and a few of them are much less than even that, like oral Imitrex at only 15%.
557111 tn?1219712047 Yes, i also had them...I am not sure if I had them due to detox or not, because i have had them off and on since i was 16...The only medicine that works for me is imitrex...It is non-narcotic..Also i use phenegan so i don't throw it up...I hope you get something to help!!
1590979 tn?1302006835 Still I find the key is when the tightness is there the only way to relieve it is to give your body a rest because usually it is a result of a weak neck trying to support your head. As for the passing out feeling, all I can do is to avoid bending up and down and straining myself. Not always a possibility though...
Avatar m tn I take Imitrex when I get them, and it usually works great, but today I have taken the maximum dose on my Rx for a 24 hr. period (200 mg) and it's still not gone. I am wondering if I went to the ER, is there something else they could do -- could they give me more Imitrex, or another triptan or something else to try to stop it? I don't want opiates. Any thoughts appreciated.
Avatar n tn I was addicted to Ambien and Cloranzepam and got off both of them by slowly shaving a bit of the pill away every three days. It takes a while but is possible and it made it bearable. I, too, wonder how I will manage my migraines without it. I also have 3 herniated discs in my neck, C4-C6, and the Fioricet helps with the neck spasms and pain. Any suggestions on how to handle the challenges without Fioricet? Getting off of it has to be totally.
