There are lots of triptans on the market and imitrex is one of the first, the generic name is called sumatriptan and it is what they will give you in the hospital, but by injecteion, if you ever go in for a migraine... they won't give you any other triptan at the hospital usually because sumatriptan by injection is pretty much the best triptan out there!! But, the names of some other triptans are maxalt, axert, zomig (like i take) ... etc.

I am a 40 yr old female with a history of migraines. I've always used Topamax as a maintenance rx & Imitrex injections as a rescue rx. My migraines have been under control for over a yr. In the last 3 months, my headaches have returned. I have also noticed that memory (short & long term) & my cognitive skills have been affected. I.E. I can't remember parts of conversations that I only had 5 minutes ago.

Anyway, I am taking Imitrex for my migraines. Well, I had problem with script to fill Imitrex medicine couple years ago.... it only supplys 9 and only covers one any type of migraine medication PER month. When I ran out of it, I asked my doctor to give me script for more Imitrex and I dropped script off at Walgreens then few minutes later, pharmacist told me that insurance was not covering that...

the only meds that help relieve most of the pain are Zomig (really expensive, but no generic version yet) and Meloxicam (generic for Mobic) - both pills taken together usually decrease pain within an hour or two. Hope this helps. My doc also suggested Imitrex when I can't afford the Zomig anymore.

so there is no reason to become an addict or to crave the medication, but ones body will still become highly dependent on the medication to a point that if you take the body off the medication abruptly you can cause seizures and even death... Imitrex is NOT like that!! Imitrex does not cause any sort of high or euphoria so you cannot become addicted to it, you will not "crave" it when you are not in pain...

The triptan you are currently using is Imitrex, generic name Sumatriptan. The triptan that I use is Zomig Nasal Spray, generic name Zolmitriptan. Some other examples of triptans are Maxalt, generic name Rizatriptan and Axert, generic name Almotriptan. It would be worth it to give one of these other triptans a try. I would suggest getting a triptan in a fast acting form, either a quick dissolve tablet or a nasal spray.

I don't have much of a question, but wanted to introduce myself. I've periodically had migraines throughout my life, but they were never very often. However, that changed since I've been diagnosed with lupus and fibromyalgia (as well as other chronic pain issues). Good Morning guys! I woke up with another migraine this morning. This is the 3rd one this month. I usually have about 2 in a year, but never this close together and this often. I have been taking 1 imitrex when I have a headache. My question is, "Is Imitrex habit-forming?" I have researched all the websites, but they also say that ultram isn't habit forming. I was just wanting some info from someone who has taken it.

I have migraines a few times a month (2-3) and take 50mg generic imitrex with an OTC NSAID. So after having two different doctors tell me that I need to get an "official diagnosis" of migraines from a neurologist, I finally saw a neuro. yesterday. To say that I am confused and angry is an understatement! For $250 he told me that I have mixed migraines/tension headaches and to reduce my stress and that my migraines would improve or lessen.

I knew there had to be a reason why neurologists preferred to stick with Triptans. I never heard of any of the forms of Cambia, including the generic name. I'm usually given whatever the next thing the neurologist thinks should be tried. He never mentioned this one. He doesn't seem to be a fan of Topamax for migraines either. I'm sure he might at some point in time if everything else has been tried.

what is the difference between the imitrex injections and pills? Which is more effective and prescribed more?

Is it safe to take Lexapro and Imitrex? There is a warning on the package against this but I thought I would ask the professionals first.

If you suffer from some other types of medical conditions too, Imitrex should not be taken. Do not take Imitrex if you have underlying cardiovascular diseases, if you have uncontrolled hypertension, if you are taking MAO-A antidepressants or and do not take Imitrex if you have severe hepatic impairment.

t take Imitrex because it causes me to have severe heart palpitations (bad enough that I have to be hospitalized - I've only been given it once, and that was all it took). The thing that works best for me as a preventative is Excedrin - just plain old, over-the-counter Excedrin, but the problem with this is that I have multiple digestive problems, among which is the tendency to develop gastric ulcers, and my gastroenterologist would really like it if I would stop taking Excedrin.

The regular tablet form is now available in generic and is fairly cheap. If you received the brand name only ODT version then I would make sure the MD writes for only generic drugs and ask the pharmacist (who should have mentioned it came in generic in a different formulation) if there is something similar that the MD can change it to before you pay a lot for a RX. Good pharmacies will catch this issue and fix it before you even arrive to pick it up.

does either imitrex or maxalt contain caffeine? I was taking Maxalt for migraines and it worked great! Now my insurance has decided I need to try Imitrex before they will approve coverage for the Maxalt. The Imitrex took about 2 hours to have any effect, but eventually my headache subsided. Since then I have had recurring headaches for 4 days.

I currently use Imitrex and/or Maxalt (generic, of course) for migraine attacks, but was often running out of meds before I was able to refill (lovely insurance companies dictating how many days one can have relief from pain). Although I had heard good things about maxalt, I am unable to use it d/t some other health concerns. I am currently taking 300 mg, 2x/day. I started at 150 and after receiving some benefit, decided along w/ my neurologist to increase the dose to 300 mg 2x/day.

BTW: Took Maxalt last night & found it worked very quickly! I was able to take it b/f the migraine was full blown; so I'm sure that might have had something to do w/the quickness. I love the "melting in your mouth" factor since that means taking it anywhere. Think I might still get the generic imitrex filled first since it's diff between $5 & $25 (but at least not the $50 relpax is).

I personally use extra-strength tylenols or ibuprofen for my migraines in combination with phenergan generic, 25 mg at night. I try to hold off on the promethazine until at least after six p.m. for the best opportunity of a successful treatment, using ice paks on my head if needed to try to freeze out the pain. This treatment would not have been effective for me prior to a lot of acupuncture and my body getting off of narcotic pain relieving meds which my body had grown dependent on.
