Common Questions and Answers about Ibuprofen and kidney function

ibuprofen

1326572 tn?1275500911 My liver and blood count look great but my doc said my kidney function is slightly off. The creatinine is high at 1.09 and the GFR is low at 54. I was occasionally taking ibuprofen but have stopped completely now. I'm also on mtx, folic acid, norco for pain and also xanax. The doc said she wasn't too worried but she wants to watch it. I'm wondering if anyone else has had the same sort of thing.
Avatar m tn Can Kidney pain be a side effect of taking Ibuprofen? I was taking ibuprofen last week consecutively for 3 days (400mg t.i.d) after laser eye surgery. A day or so after starting it I experienced mild pain/discomfort in my left flank that came in waves. When I stopped taking the ibuprofen the flank pain also stopped. The next day I took one more dose - the flank pain started again within an hour, but was gone the next day.
Avatar n tn May be wise to have your labs checked Creatinine and BUN and GFR for kidney function.
Avatar n tn s body is unique and reacts differently to toxins. I would be concerned with kidney function in addition to liver function and, yes, kidney damage can be permanent. Chances are you're just fine but for your peace of mind get an appt with your doctor and ask to have lab work to measure your kidney and liver function. Usually, staying well hydrated and eating properly will keep your organs in good condition. Good luck!
Avatar n tn How much ibuprofen were you taking, how often and what for?
Avatar f tn Agreed... you should have a Urologist test your kidney-function. High creatinine is generally a good indicator of poor kidney-function, or at the very least, reduced kidney-function. Good luck to you.
Avatar n tn Has anyone noticed any difference in blood sugar numbers while regularly taking Ibuprofen, or other NSAIDS? I've had some health anxiety, and stopped taking ibuprofen in fear of kidney issues. But I notice my post dinner readings have been worse. I was only taking about 600mg before bed daily. Would that still effect blood sugar by dinner time the next day? Glad I'm off the pills. Just scared will affect BS control.
Avatar m tn I have been taking maximum daily dosage of generic ibuprofen (3200 mg a day, usually 1600mg at a time). I also take 600mg etodolac, 400 in the am and 200 in the pm. I have been having kidney pain on both sides, and excessive sweating. Could this be from taking too much NSAID medication?
Avatar f tn Stop the ibuprofen! No NSAIDS if you have a lower GFR. You didn't say your age but yes it is possible kidney function will return to normal with stopping the meds. Ibuprofen is hard on kidneys. Drink lots of fluids and I would see a nephrologist also.
963889 tn?1359677334 Systemic effects of kidney failure like anemia, hypertension or repeated infections will further compromise the kidney function and hence the deterioration in GFR and kidney function. It can only be monitored to gauze the progress and the symptoms are treated. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
963889 tn?1359677334 My girlfriend had an open biopsy on her kidneys and it showed ibuprofen caused the damage. Her doctor in Florida did some research on Ibuprofen and then did a report for the AMA. Ibruprofen (advil and etc) is the number one cause of kidney failure of over the counter products in the Nation.
Avatar n tn my bun is 63 and my creatine is 8.02 and im 60 yrs. old.
Avatar f tn Usually the back is the first place that hurts known as the flank area that will hurt when you have a kidney infection. But I have had kidney pain and no infection and was caused by medicines.
Avatar f tn My mother has been taking nsaids for arthritis for last two years and i m really concerned wether it will effect kidney..
Avatar m tn Try not to take these, or take them as little as possible. Drink lots of clear fluids also. Kidney function can go up and down dependng on diet and medications. Right now are fine but you don't want this to keep progressing. I would try and get some answers a to whether this could be genetic or maybe diet is an issue. Good luck.
1386405 tn?1291587800 The biggest effect of Ibuprofen is in the last trimester. It affects the kidney/urine output of the fetus, which results in lower amniotic fluid levels. It can also thin your blood, which can increase the risk of heavy bleeding during delivery and after. Your OB will tell you the same thing. Everything will be ok, and now you know, and you won't take it again. Good luck with the pregnancy!
Avatar n tn Yesterday, when my regular MD returned, I saw her and she ordered blood tests (presumably for Kidney function), urinalysis (to assess infection) and a CT scan. I find out the results on Thursday. Regarding you recommendation of antibiotic therapy, I am assuming I wait for the urinalysis results.... Also I am not familiar with the use of anti inflammatory drugs. Could you elaborate??? Thank you.
Avatar m tn Be safe. Ask for some blood work to check your kidney function and make sure to drink plenty of water. NSAIDS at that high a dose can also cause stomach ulcers and bleeds.
Avatar f tn state, I would not recommend taking more than the maximum recommended daily dose of ibuprofen. Also, if your kidney function is temporarily (or permanently) decreased due to your kidney stone(s), then any medication that you take can be more potent or toxic to you and the organs that metabolize the medication. It is possible that you could speak with your personal physician regarding a "better" strategy for managing your pain. ~•~ Dr.
5792451 tn?1390934690 m only 26 years old. My eGFR was 123 so my doctor told me that I had great function and he only needed to see me once a year to keep an eye on things. I've had quite a few health problems over the past year but nothing specifically related to my kidneys, however my most recent lab work shows that my eGFR is now only 83.
Avatar m tn The creatinine level is an indication of how well the kidneys are functioning, the filtering process is decreased in decreased kidney function. Talk to your dr about your concerns and get his advice...there are things you can do to improve kidney function, and you can also find out the factors behind decreased kidney function in your case. The Kidney Foundation is a good source for information. Levels less than 60 for over 3 months is considered chronic kidney disease.
Avatar m tn I am female. They didn't do a urea count that I see. I take ibuprofen and some tylenol for neck inflammation and pain and don't workout.
Avatar m tn Well it certainly appears that your diabetes and hbp are affecting your kidneys. Your GFR isnt horrible but you don't want it to continue dropping. Are you seeing a nephrologist? Make sure you see a kidney dr and that he knows all of the meds youre taking-even over the counter. Avoid any ibuprofen or any anti inflammatories as these are hard on the kidneys. You really need to make sure your diabetes and hbp are under control also. Your creatine is slightly high but not horrible.
1654058 tn?1407159066 With low platelets from tx and a compromised liver and kidney system, any of the NSAIDs are contra-indicated for you (includes Motrin, Advil, Aleve). Tylenol is not to be taken indiscriminately either, though. With cirrhosis, no more than 2000 mg per day max (that means no more than 4 Extra Strength Tylenol in any 24 hour period).
Avatar f tn Drink lots of water and you need to know that ibuprofen and anti-inflammatories are filtered thru the kidneys and can be hard on them- so dont over-do it if you are taking these. But I would really make sure your gyn does some blood work and re-tests your urine. good luck.
