Common Questions and Answers about Ibuprofen and gi bleeding

ibuprofen

Avatar f tn Thanks, after talking to multiple other doctors and pharmacists, they all said the same thing. All NSAIDS can cause bleeding and flare ups, specially for Crohns patients. I'm fairly certain my GI has no idea on what he is doing.
3122657 tn?1357432602 I was told not to take it. something to do with internal bleeding. try doing a search here and I'm sure you will find some threads about the subject. I was also not to exceed 2000mg per day. I don't even take half that amount.
Avatar f tn Care needs to be taken with using anti-inflammatory medications like Ibuprofen. This type of medication is known to cause stomach bleeding and should always be taken with or after food. Sometimes a doctor will prescribe a stomach remedy to protect the stomach when using Ibuprofen. Ibuprofen does not suit everyone and can also cause oedema (swelling). Because this question has been posted in the Women's Health Community, are you talking about menstrual cramps?
Avatar m tn Naproxen is an NSAID (non steroidal anti-inflammatory drug), along the lines of Motrin (ibuprofen). It can be rough on the tummy, and is usually not recommended in people who have a history of a GI Bleed, bleeding ulcers, etc. Read more here: http://www.drugs.com/naproxen.
Avatar n tn If I need to take a narcotic, it helps the narcotic work better and longer. But it can cause stomach upset and even GI bleeding. (Percocet has Tylenol (acetaminophen) in it so you never want to take that in addiction to your Percocet.) You can also talk to the pharmacist about ibuprofen and how best to take it with your Percocet. (Also some people find good relief with OTC Aleve.
Avatar f tn My sister in law was never told not to take Ibuprofen and miscarried.
Avatar f tn I went to see my first GI in 2004 due to rectal bleeding. A colonoscopy was performed and revealed nothing. The GI couldn't find a cause for the bleeding and it stopped on its own with no re-occurence. In 6/2010 I went back to the GI due to severe constipation and abdominal pain. I was diagnosed with IBS-Constipation Type and given literature on the condition and nothing more.
Avatar f tn I was told by my doctor that ibuprofen can cause internal bleeding.. I had to ask because ibuprofen is the only medicine that helped my toothaches. You should be fine, just be careful now and don't drink monsters and only take Tylenol..
Avatar n tn Then we went to another GI specialist and he stopped my Nexium and then I had GI bleeding again. It is very rare to have a recurrent bleeding episode without any apparent cause except excessive acid. Do you have any explanation and remedy for this condition?
Avatar m tn My vet used to recommend it for his arthritic dog patients until one strange case happened. After the first dose, the dog became sick and started vomiting blood, and by the time the owners got him back to the vet the dog died. The aspirin literally ate a hole right through the stomach. I've used tylenol on my dogs (per vet instructions) in the past for early onset hip dysplasia, but found it not all that effective.
1386405 tn?1291587800 It can also thin your blood, which can increase the risk of heavy bleeding during delivery and after. Your OB will tell you the same thing. Everything will be ok, and now you know, and you won't take it again. Good luck with the pregnancy!
Avatar m tn whenever i take even one 550mg (naproxen) ibuprofen and then drink, my stomach gets tender and bloated and i feel bad. i usually take a maalox or something like that, yet i never throw up from it so i don't know if that's applicable for you. i think it is due to the ibuprofen, but if you're not used to eating spicy foods then it could have disagreed with you, not necessarily meaning food poisoning. you should never drink and take NSAIDs at the same time.
4722421 tn?1360708571 NSAIDS (the class of drug that Ibuprofen is in) can be really helpful but can also cause some serious problems if taken too long and too much. You can risk having GI bleeds and kidney problems if taken too long. I wouldnt recomend taking this drug daily for a long period of time and if you want to, I would DEFINITELY talk to your Dr. With that said, Prescription strength ibuprofen is a 800mg pill.
Avatar f tn t for the past 4 months. Three days ago, he underwent an upper/lower GI scope and no source of the bleeding could be detected and, per the doctors, everything looked normal. The next course of action is an ultrasound of his liver and gall bladder, as well as the "pill cam" (to determine if the possible source of the bleeding is in the small intestine). During the course of blood work, it has been discovered that he has elevated liver enzymes.
Avatar f tn I found out I had hep c a few months ago I started pain management they but me on 7.
1328595 tn?1283018449 Yup, I'm taking it with food and water. I'm taking the Naprosyn for a pretty specific reason but I could possibly ask my doc for another option.
Avatar f tn If tiredness and nausea would be from anemia, then anemia would be clearly seen on blood testing. And, if anemia would be from gastrointestinal bleeding, than blood would be found in the stool with stool blood test (not necessary that blood would be seen with a naked eye). Tiredness and nausea and weight loss could be from cancer, but **colorectal cancer is extremely rare under age of 40. **Small intestinal lymphoma is also rare for your age.
Avatar m tn What did they determine is causing the bleeding at the juncture of the small and large intestine? This CANNOT be ignored and the cause needs to be determined and treated! Find yourself a good Gastroenterologist for further investigation as to why you are bleeding where you are. Get on a stool softener like Miralax (not habit forming) and you may have to play around with the dosage to get what works for you. Also, eat yogurt enriched with probiotics everyday.
Avatar m tn The first pathway can slowly destroy the stomach lining and over time, cause ulcers or GI bleeding. Celebrex is the only medication that does not go down the COX-1 pathway very much. Others were developed (Vioxx and Bextra), but then recalled due to issues with people having heart problems. So, if you do not have GI bleeding or an ulcer, you may want to ask your doctor about other NSAIDS.
Avatar m tn So much will depend on how much you consume of either drug and how often, how long and how your particular system handles the processing and elimination of either drug. Ibuprofen (IB) can cause more GI distress than acetaminophen. It is often more harsh on your stomach and can cause a GI bleed without warning. However some ppl take it for years (as directed) and do not suffer from GI distress.

Avatar f tn I had my first endoscopy two years ago and my GI suspected Barretts esophagus but the biopsies were negative. He had me return in a year and the same thing - suspected Barretts, negative biopsies, return in a year. So I went for a third time last week and the sme thing happened -- my GI was sure I had Barretts but the biopsies were negative. He now wants me to return again in a year. I do have occasional heartburn because I take a lot of ibuprofen for my back, but no big deal.
