Hysterectomy for migraine prevention

Common Questions and Answers about Hysterectomy for migraine prevention

hysterectomy

Avatar n tn I have recently been prescribed Verapamil for migraine prevention but I'm also taking Norvasc. Should these medications be taken together? The Norvasc was prescribed a number of years ago by a different doctor for Migraine prevention. It hasn't helped my migraines but I've continued to take it. Since they are both blood pressure meds, I'm doubtful I should take both.
Avatar n tn I had a hysterectomy ten years ago. Prior to the surgery, I suffered with migraines and they were significantly reduced with the use of estrogen. Since stopping the estrogen, I have been getting severe frequent migraines. Should I go back on estrogen?
1088430 tn?1259159773 I am currently taking anywhere from 300mg to 600mg of Magnesium citrate a day. The recommended dose for migraine prevention that has been proven in scientific trials is 400mg per day (in one trial) and 600mg per day (in another trial)... so, basically, I think that if 400mgs works, then that's all you should take. But, some people find that more is helpful, or sometimes people's doctors will prescribe more.
Avatar f tn I just started taking Effexor XR 3 wks ago and I was wondering if anyone has had a good experience with this med as a preventative? If so, what is the appropriate dosage for migraine prevention? I am on 75 mg once a day. Also, I started taking taking 500mg of GABA and 200mg of l-theanine before bed to help me sleep. I have been having trouble sleeping since December (break-up). That is why I am taking the effexor. The GABA/theanine combo has helped with the sleep greatly.
1088430 tn?1259159773 I think there is a connection between stressing with anxious thoughts and migraine pain for me. I think it is one of many triggers. Hormones for me, before my complete hysterectomy, was another one. TMJ disorder (I have arthritis in my jaws) is another big migraine trigger. Certain foods are another trigger, as is crying, certain smells such as cigarette or perfume, altering sleep pattern, not eating on time, too much sun, computer or tv, and so on.
Avatar f tn I had an ovary removed due to a large cyst a few years ago. I was also taking topamax for migraine prevention. Within a few months, a lost a tremendous amount of weight (I'm 5'8 annd went from 156 to 123) my hair was falling out in clumps (I had actual bald spots) I was twitching in my face, had muscle spasms, extreme fatigue, joint pain, night sweats, and more. After numerous tests and dr visits my parents sent me to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.
2024985 tn?1328846203 You will eventually come to a risk-benefit formula that works best for you, balancing the need for steroids, either inhaled or oral, with their side effects, with the reduction in frequency of potentially life-threatening episodes. There is no "one shoe-fits-all".
Avatar m tn Hi Im glad your neurologist knows of the upcoming surgery. I had my hysterectomy and needed hormones only for 6 months, many women take them some do not. There is an herbal that helps with hot flashes and night sweats its called black cosch...please ask your gyno and neuro before you take this, herbals are still a medicine which can effect pre existing conditions. With your family history, If I was you Id lean towards getting the procedure done. Do you know what type of cysts you have?
128966 tn?1212772935 hi Shazz, The reason i asked about the stress and depression is that this usually are the triggers for migraine. Aside from Lexapro, it would also be good to relax, de-stress and avoid, if possible, from being depressed. This will definitely decreased your migraine attacks. Have fun:) Take care and keep us posted.
1132246 tn?1260288259 You are only supposed to take 1 pill in 24 hours but this is the only thing I found that will take away my migraine!! We are leaving for mexico in 2 days and I have my Relpax packed and ready for an attack!! That's how much confidence I have in this drug. I am also taking magnessium and feverfew daily but found that taking 800 mg 2 times a day gave me bad runs. So I am only taking 500 mg a day.
Avatar f tn I'm day 5 into taking Topiramate 25mg at night for migraine prevention. My migraine is a daily pressure headache at the base of my skull. I have Chiari malformation type 1 but neurosurgeon says I don't need surgery, thankfully. He and my neurologist advised i try Topiramate as Amitriptyline didn't suit me (made me suicidal) and my asthma prevents them trying me on beta blockers.
768044 tn?1294223436 But, everything on the original list I gave you are common first line preventative treatments for migraine prevention that lots of people who use the migraine tracker take... so adding all of them would be helpful. But, personally, for me, the addition of Botox Injections, Beta Blockers, Magnesium and Coenzyme Q10 to the migraine tracker would be helpful.
Avatar f tn I was on it before for migraine prevention. Doc had me stop it a month before coming off my birth control.
768044 tn?1294223436 In the Migraines and Headaches Community, tia1977 posted a question asking what the best prescription for migraine prevention was. I think that this is a very interesting question that we probably all want to know the answer to and I still think that there is no simple answer since we are all so individual and unique... BUT! I remembered an article I read called "Evidence-Based Guidelines for Migraine Headache in the Primary Care".
237152 tn?1206651036 s why they start you out on a low dose and move you up over several weeks. I took it for migraine prevention and it changed my taste of everything. I hated it but it is good for migraine prevention and anti-seizures pain etc. I finally adjusted to it, I felt like you at first. I just hate all medication but sometimes you don't have an option.
Avatar f tn I saw a headache specialist for this on a regular basis. If I developed a migraine that lasted for more then a week I would see the Dr., who would prescribe a 'burst' to zap the headache. We always found that my headaches would respond to Methergine. I finally decided that because my headaches were under control and the triggers were identified ( inflammation and strain from neck ), I could turn my med. prescriptions over to my PC Physician in order to eliminate so many appts.
1397091 tn?1296576718 I had a migraine start last Monday and tried to tough it out with a few hydrocodon and phenegren. It got worse so I broke down and went to th ER four days later and that nasty lady doc was there. I still have the stabbing pain behind my left eye, it won't go away. Thank God it was put in my charts that I was to be givin stadol for migraines. She only gave me 1mg but at that point I didn't care just needed some relief. She took 1 and a half hours to get to me.
Avatar f tn Hi wondering if anyone could help, I have always suffered with migraines and can't take much medication due to ashma , the last few weeks I have been having a migraine that doesn't go away it may be better in the morning then I can feel tension all round my eyes and the pain then starts after dinner , it just seems to be hovering and not getting any better, any advice would be really helpful , about 3 times in last week it has caused me to feel sick and stay in bed
Avatar m tn I was intialkly prescribed Tramadol for the pain, and then Nortriptyline for migraine prevention. I started at 25mg once at night. That decreased the headaches probably about 50% then moved to 50mg at bedtime. That didn't really help the headaches anymore, but I began to notice the side effects. I was REALLY drowsy and I started to have mood swings (I'd be sad or anxious for no reason). So, we decided to go back down to 25mg again. Also...
Avatar f tn I take 300mg Neurontin at night for Migraine prevention and have gained 5 pounds on it over the course of 6 weeks. I hope that that the weight gain will taper off.
Avatar f tn re doing and whether or not the ponstel seems to help. My doctor is recommending that I have a hysterectomy but I am not ready for that, so I'm just riding it out for now. Do you have heavy periods? Have you tried anything for them? I have extremely heavy periods and am anemic. I have tried lysteda but it didn't help.
Avatar f tn I am currently taking a med prevention for migraine, also to calm my nerves, so if i have anxiety it should help me at least a little. it is amitriptyline.
Avatar m tn Has anybody here tried Effexor extended release for migraine prevention? I read on Dr Hain's website that they use Effexor as a first drug for migraine nowadays. Would be interesting to hear what people has to say about it; side effects, effects, how long you can be on it, the need to up the dosage, etc?
Avatar n tn I am trying to find out the benefits or the risks of also having the hysterectomy. I know the recoup time may be longer - but are there other reasons not to have the hysterectomy also?
1552758 tn?1304928419 Hi - I don't have a question but maybe have some answers for the other migraine sufferers out there. I have been a migraine sufferer for about twenty years. From the days when you had to lock yourself in a dark room for 3 days, vomiting and rolling in pain, scared of someone making a noise and having a spouse that does not even suffer from headaches!
Avatar f tn hi get this nearly every night i am in process of trying to find out what it is my headache is always on rightside but if you have been sterilized like me it could be down to hormones which is what my doc said today. but i have got to wait for swabs to come back first to make sure it isnt an infection first. bless ya feel for you as i no the pain is intense.
Avatar n tn Postural hypotension occurs when the blood pressure dips when you suddenly stand up. Knowing your triggers for migraine will help you avoid recurrences in the future. Relaxation techniques like biofeedback therapy as mentioned by kajama is also effective. Take care and do keep us posted.
1103688 tn?1257894552 First off I think that increasing the Topamax to 100mg if possible would be a good place to start since you have said that the Topamax has greatly reduced the number of severe headaches you get. The normal dose of Topamax for migraine prevention is 100mg, so taking it at the regular dose might greatly improve your situation.
