Common Questions and Answers about Hysterectomy and estrogen therapy

hysterectomy

Avatar m tn Hello, I'm 41 and underwent a total hysterectomy 1 month ago. The Dr. started me on the patches right away. I just can't sleep! This is driving me nuts since I'm a teacher and need my rest. I look horrible and feel exhausted. Is that a side effect of the patches? Yesterday I was desperate and removed it to see what happens for a week or so. What can I do? I am desperate and of course do not want to age early nor break a leg if tripping on the street. Help!

Avatar n tn The estrogen is coming from your endocrine systom. Are you taking any hormone replacement therapy? It sounds like your estrogen dominate and may need to add testosterone. It sounds like you could possibly be having symptoms of low thyroid too. Keep us up to date on how your doing and take care.

Avatar n tn I had a hysterectomy at age 49 and have been on estrogen ever since (12 years so far). I'm not sure I could function without it. I was a basket case until I found the "right" form and dose of estrogen. What gynecologists fail to acknowledge and many women do not realize is that the ovaries are health "powerhouses." They produce hormones a woman's whole life, with estrogen falling but testosterone gradually increasing in the post-meno years.

Avatar f tn I am going to have a total laparoscopic hysterectomy (uterus and ovaries) in about 2 weeks. 1) How long will I spend in the hospital? 2) What are the tricky tasks around the house that I might do out of habit, but really shouldn't? I'm guessing laundry and loading/unloading dishwasher...what else? 3) How soon after surgery do women start on hormone replacement? Thank you!

Avatar f tn ve also had a hysterectomy in 1997 and was on replacement therapy for 15 years. 2 and 4 years later I was suffering the same pain and the doctor did a laporoscope both times. Afterward I felt better. But the replacement therapy I was on (estrogen) was causing it to continue to grow. My Dr. said there is no way of absolutely getting all of the endo when they do a hysterectomy and then being on the estrogen, what was left was still growing. So I stopped taking the estrogen and it got better.
Avatar f tn Everything I have read seems to indicate that estrogen and also estrogen replacement therapy slow down the progression of fibrosis. I copied and pasted a few links here but just Google Hepatitis C liver fibrosis estrogen replacement and all sorts of sites will come up for one to read. 1074733 tn?1256231619 My blood and saliva panel came back showing a very high level of estrogen, even though I have no uterus and only 1 ovary. They call this estrogen dominance. They prescribed estrogen cream which was compounded by a pharmacist. Over the past 10 years I have had numerous doctors tell me they thought I should be on HRT for symptoms I was having, and just because of the hysterectomy.
Avatar f tn Endometriosis can complicate matters because all of the endo is seldom removed at the time of hysterectomy and can itself produce estrogen. So it is possible that it was helping to keep you supplied with estrogen but is no longer. Have you checked your estrogen levels periodically since your surgery? However, unfortunately, we cannot always go by levels.
Avatar n tn I had a pap smear done that came back questionable and she wants to do a radical hysterectomy. But before she does that, she said to go back to my Oncologist and have her put me on Progesterone Therapy before doing a radical hysterectomy. Well...my Oncologist said , "NO" and did not offer me an explantation. She just said to ask my OB/GYN. I left there frustrated. I don't want cancer again, but what do I do now?
Avatar f tn Hello, After hysterectomy, hormone replacement therapy would consist of estrogen alone usually given daily by pill or sometimes weekly or biweekly skin patch. However hormonal replacement therapy should be given for a short time only as long term use may be associated with a small increase in breast cancer. In my opinion you should consult a gynecologist and start with hormone replacemenr therapy.

It's done in my doctors office and takes about 10 minutes. Now I want and enjoy sex more than ever in my life!
Avatar n tn Tamoxifen is a selective estrogen receptor modulator, meaning that it targets estrogen in the breast independent of ovarian production of estrogen. However, if you have had your ovaries removed, then you would be postmenopausal and could possibly take an aromatase inhibitor instead of tamoxifen. Either way, if your breast cancer is hormone receptor positive, then hormone therapy would likely be recommended as the body does produce estrogen outside of the ovaries.
