Hypoglycemia unrelated to diabetes

Common Questions and Answers about Hypoglycemia unrelated to diabetes

hypoglycemia

Avatar n tn I have pre-diabetes (about 2 years now) and have autoimmune degenerative neuropathy (CIDP for 26 years) unrelated to diabetes. I am not overweight, and am 32 years of age. My question is: does inflammation in the nervous system cause alterations in glucose metabolism? I'm currently having multiple daily bouts of hypoglycemia - my doctors can't/won't answer my question. I'm taking IVIG, Imuran and Ultram - no steroids or antidiabetics.
Avatar m tn Some people experience hypoglycemia for many years off and on before a diagnosis of diabetes. You may also have had diabetes for quite awhile and dismissed it as just hypoglycemia. If you have developed neuropathy that is probably the case. All you can do now is treat the neuropathy and control your blood sugar with a combination of weight loss, exercise, lowering carb intake and oral meds or insulin as prescribed by your doctor.
Avatar f tn I think there are two types of hypoglycemia. If it is reactive hypoglycemia the intake of sugar will depress blood sugar further. In the other type an intake of sugar will raise blood sugar. The latter would explain why the intake of sugar helps you. I hope other people on this forum can explain it better, since my knowledge is sketchy. I have reactive hypoglycemia.
Avatar n tn A simple test can give you a definate answer. Shaking is sometimes a sign of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). This is different than diabetes. Diabetes is a disease that occurs when your pancreas doesn't produce enough insulin to offset the sugar you eat. Hypoglycemia is just the opposite. It occurs when your body puts out too much insulin. Your symptoms could be any number of things. Your doctor will be able to help you more than we can here.
Avatar n tn If something is causing juvenile diabetes, it may be possible to slow down its progression by giving her insulin shots. On the other hand, it could be something unrelated to diabetes. Get her to the doctor. Give the doctor all her fasting blood glucose readings. You should be recording one every morning. Take the glucometer to the doctor when you see him so that you can check the glucometer's accuracy at the doctor's office.

885280 tn?1289562555 Hypoglycemia can lead to diabetes if not watched. I was told by my doctor that we are going to have to watch me for diabetes as I am hypoglycemic. Because there is a history of diabetes in my family.
Avatar n tn Low blood sugars can be VERY scary and hard to deal with. You may want to talk to your Dr. about getting a prescription and training as to how to use a Glucophage kit. This is essentially a large dose of sugar in the form of a shot to use in severe low blood sugar situations. Also you will need to have those around you trained in its use as well in case you can not get food and sugar fast enough on your own.
Avatar m tn I asked a friend who happens to be a nutrisionist and she said it might be hypoglycemia. Now to my question or I guess concern. When I had my CBC done, my fasting blood sugar was 95, I still didn't feel that everything was right with my blood sugar so I bought a glucose monitor to do random blood sugar tests. In the morning my BS is never lower than approximately 85.
Avatar n tn This type of hypoglycemia does not lead to diabetes.
Avatar f tn I am eighteen years old and female. I have suffered from what seems to be chronic nausea for a number of years now. I always feel like I'm sick and I get carsick very easily, but I do not vomit. My stomach gets into knots at very random times, even if I have eaten. When I was around fifteen years old, I used to experience chronic headaches as well as the nausea.
Avatar f tn t know that hep c has a relationship to hypoglycemia but it has been proven to be connected to many health problems. There is no cheap way to treat hepatitis C. But there is lot of programs to get financial assistance to treat Hep C. There is so many current advancement in the treatment of hepatitis C. Can you confirm your genotype. Avatar f tn I would see your doctor about this very soon, as folks with hypoglycemia may develop diabetes later on. You may have pre-diabetes, and need to go on a diabetic diet. Meanwhile, make sure you have both protein and carbohydrates with all meals, and with all snacks, which you seem to be doing. You also might need to get a dietary consult and/or see an endocrinologist, for both are specially trained in working with people with blood sugar problems.
1654177 tn?1319838494 Fasting, an OGTT [Oral Glucose Tolerance Test] and/or an A1c. if the OGTT points to diabetes and A1c usually is ordered. The OGTT sees how well your body shed excess glucose. The A1c looks at your glucose levels over the past 2-3 months. Kaiser doc should have ordered these tests - email her and request labs. Numb Feet and Diabetes This could be associated with diabetic neuropathy which is damage to the nerves.
Avatar n tn I was diagnosed Type 1 (1.5) much later in life but I have spoken with many young diabetics and unfortunately, this rebellion stage is not uncommon. After being forced from a young age to be so disciplined they miss the freedom that their peers have and then stop for a time managing their diabetes as they should. You really can't make your son control his diabetes even though I know how hard this must be for you. One thing that might help is if he could connect to other diabetics his age.
Avatar f tn You should get an A1C done which is an average of blood sugars for a period of 2-3 months. Unfortunately hypoglycemia does turn into diabetes for many people. As you are thin, and have lost weight you should be sure if you are diagnosed with diabetes that they correct assess you for Type 1 or Type 2. If you have a doctor who tells you this is normal and not to worry, see another doctor. Diabetes is a manageable condition which if ignored can have grave consequences.

1055725 tn?1265869375 m just going to speak to the symptoms you are experiencing and the possibility of hypoglycemia or diabetes. Hypoglycemia is one of the symptoms of diabetes and just means low blood sugar. Some people however, have a diagnosis of just hypoglycemia, without the diabetes. That is very different. Your symptoms might relate to either one, or they might not. Some other symptoms of diabetes are increased hunger and thirst. Some people however are diabetic without experiencing any symptoms at all.
Avatar m tn (Fasting = 79, 1/2hr = 81, 1hr = 71, 2hr =79) I have a very strong family history of diabetes and am working to prevent it in myself At least, that's what I hope. Currently I: - walk/run (4mph+, usually on an incline of 2-10 degrees) between 15 and 40 miles per week - am a mostly vegan and try to avoid refined sugars of any sort. I do eat sashimi once every few weeks.
Avatar n tn About hour 3 I crashed to a blood sugar level of about 37. I have met with a nutritionist and I am trying to adhere to this diet. However, it isn't making me feel any better. My head is very cloudy and I have difficulty concentrating. My head hurts constently and I can't sleep well at night. My eyes burn and sometimes I just feel like I am zoned out. I have a demanding job and this isn't working out so well for me. In addition I feel like my weight is all over the place.
Avatar n tn You don't say if you have type 1 diabetes. How low does your blood sugar drop at how long after eating. Then how high does it spike? Are you on medication or insulin?
Avatar f tn I told him that I previously had gestational diabetes that once on diet alone caused my blood sugar levels to drop so low that the meter read in the 40's and sometimes just LOW. The nutritionsts then changed my diet so that it was double portion sizes and everything read perfectly. Due to this it was decided that I would take the medication only once per day instead of twice.
