Common Questions and Answers about Hypoglycemia on dogs

hypoglycemia

Avatar f tn A while back, last summer, I had been on a road trip from minnesota back to missouri, I hardly ate anything but a little bit of puppy chow and some cheese curds, that night while trying to unpack before eating I got really dizzy and shaky, I realize at this point it was most likely from low blood sugar due to not eating, but not every time I go for a few hours without eating when I start to feel hungry I get really shaky and anxious, do you think this is hypoglycemia developing or just associati
2154088 tn?1336592380 This is a very tricky case and I am not sure how much help I will be. Chronic hypoglycemia is often due to a hormonal imbalance or for older dogs a tumor attached to the pancreas (insulinoma). But in this case I wonder if your dog has epilepsy and is seizuring/hallucinating (staring at the wall) and the sympotms are being confused with a low blood sugar level. Hypoglycemia can cause seizures however primary epilepsy is more common. The neurologist will be able to help a lot. Good luck.
Avatar f tn According the vet, it could have been caused by the drugs she was on to fight ehrlichiosis. We waited another month to see if her liver function would normalize on its own. Another blood test was ran yesterday. Her test results indicated normal ALT levels, as well as normal kidney and blood count indicators. However, she had very low glucose level. Normal level, according to her vet, was about 60 units. Hers was 18.
Avatar n tn What else was done besides taking the dogs temperature?
Avatar f tn Hello Nat....You should be worried and You shouldn't wait any longer for treatment.....3 days is too long for a Tiny Chi to recover on it's own....Dehydration and/or hypoglycemia are common in these little ones and can be fatal quickly.....Please call your Vet right now and get him in.....He can't wait any longer....It would be impossible for us to diagnose him over an online forum although I wish we could! Make the call, now.....Good luck and let us know what you find out.....
Avatar n tn I'm not the Vet, but wanted to say that there is a thread going over in The Pet forum, under Dogs, that may have alot of your answers. It's on the first page titled: "Seizures....Epilepsy?" There are also web sights listed dealing with the subject (On this thread). Maybe this will help you....Good Luck...

Avatar n tn Just give it the utmost care that it needs in order to really make things work out and to be well in the future. I just hope that it will get well soon.
Avatar f tn I have a 6mth old Chihuahua puppy that's has been having episodes where he starts yelping and then goes stiff then limp and for a split second stops breathing. Afterwards he seems as if he is extremely week and lays there, when he tries to lift his head he is really shaky. After bout a min or so he is fine and just wants alot of water. I have heard of Chihuahua's have hypoglycemia and seizures. But when i have looked up the symptoms of them both these do not match.
Avatar m tn My dog (who is not a puppy) does some strange things and makes some weird noises during dreams and sleep. She howls, moans, yips, breathes like she's running a marathon, snores...... So weird breathing CAN be just a dreaming-thing. The length of time it takes to really "wake up" can vary with dogs too. Mine wakes instantly, but some dogs are dozy for a minute or two after waking.
Avatar n tn Did he run some lab work and urinalysis? Here is an article about kidney disease in dogs and how to manage it long term. It was extremely helpful to me when my dog developed it. The entire article runs about 40 printed pages. http://www.dogaware.com/kidney.
Avatar n tn Yes, hypoglycemia can be an early warning sign of diabetes, or you might have something else going on. Talk to your doctor. Tell him what you are experiencing. Then make sure you get an A1C test, not just a fasting blood sugar test. The A1C tests all your glucose for the last couple months, not just one moment.
Avatar n tn Sometimes even just below 80, I can experience symptoms of hypoglycemia. I believe this is usually when my levels are on the way down, dropping quickly. And exercise can cause levels to drop for over a day after the exercise... sometimes as long as 2 days.
6918915 tn?1395932871 I suddenly get very light headed, dizzy, anxious, hot, sweaty and STARVING. I think this is hypoglycemia but not totally sure and I'm going to ask my doctor on Monday at my appt. It happened here and there a few weeks ago but now it's been happening every day and its awful. I end up literally stuffing my face with anything I can find that has sugar because my body feels like that's my only instinct. Then after like 20 minutes of eating and putting my head down I feel better.
Avatar n tn You don't say if you have type 1 diabetes. How low does your blood sugar drop at how long after eating. Then how high does it spike? Are you on medication or insulin?
1654177 tn?1319838494 Numb Feet Hypoglycemia can cause fatigue [see above on testing]. Also, a common side effect of Int/Riba is fatigue AND numb feet. Post on the HCV Forum to see if others encountered awakening foot numbness.
Avatar f tn okay well today I had to make it out of the grocery store. I didn't really want so because I know the temperature was way too hot( 98 degrees today) but we were at the end of the bottom of the pudding bowl in my home. and for some odd reason to store with packed today. so when I finish I got in line to purchase items, I waited in line for about 35 minutes until it was my turn to ring up.
Avatar f tn Been checking it on and off and reading a lot on the subject but no definite answer as to what I need to be watching for in the future. It ranges from being in the 60s to 120s. The highest I've ever saw it go is 122 but that was two hours after eating.
Avatar n tn The answer will depend on age and medical conditions. I would recommend you talk with your physician about what is best for you.
Avatar n tn d be okay for as long as I would be there. That was NOT the case. I found myself ON THE FLOOR calling for my fiance' to help me. He brought crackers and peanut butter. I ate one square (which was not enough, of course) and he was litterally feeding me as I laid there unable to get up. He was asking me what he needed to do for me but before he could feed me a second one, I was not even able to think about what I needed to do.
Avatar f tn I would see your doctor about this very soon, as folks with hypoglycemia may develop diabetes later on. You may have pre-diabetes, and need to go on a diabetic diet. Meanwhile, make sure you have both protein and carbohydrates with all meals, and with all snacks, which you seem to be doing. You also might need to get a dietary consult and/or see an endocrinologist, for both are specially trained in working with people with blood sugar problems.
1523917 tn?1302215871 My father is diabetic and I was told that there may be a connection or that my hypoglycemia may turn inton diabetes later on in life. I am now 41 and have very little problem controlling my blood sugar and I still do not take medication for it. Don't be alarmed...it is a very controllable condition. Keep an eye on your thyroid as this may be part of a thyroid issue but you can handle this.
1662361 tn?1302762372 I have noticed lately tho when I test because my mom and grandma are diabetic that my sugar levels are from 50 to maybe 75 no matter what I eat. I snack on granola and some times hard candy and sometimes cookies. I just feel sick all the time, and dizzy and i get really shaky and, Nothing I have been doing is working. I Have noticed my stomach hurting alot and i went to the dr for that and I had a Bactria infection. A friend told me that I could have an ulcer or it could be my sugar levels.
Avatar f tn I have been diagnosed with type II diabetes, and my physician at the time immediately put me on actoplusmet (no discussion of diet and excersise control first). I told him that I previously had gestational diabetes that once on diet alone caused my blood sugar levels to drop so low that the meter read in the 40's and sometimes just LOW. The nutritionsts then changed my diet so that it was double portion sizes and everything read perfectly.
