Hypoglycemia in toy dogs

Common Questions and Answers about Hypoglycemia in toy dogs

hypoglycemia

2154088 tn?1336592380 This is a very tricky case and I am not sure how much help I will be. Chronic hypoglycemia is often due to a hormonal imbalance or for older dogs a tumor attached to the pancreas (insulinoma). But in this case I wonder if your dog has epilepsy and is seizuring/hallucinating (staring at the wall) and the sympotms are being confused with a low blood sugar level. Hypoglycemia can cause seizures however primary epilepsy is more common. The neurologist will be able to help a lot. Good luck.
Avatar n tn Did he run some lab work and urinalysis? Here is an article about kidney disease in dogs and how to manage it long term. It was extremely helpful to me when my dog developed it. The entire article runs about 40 printed pages. http://www.dogaware.com/kidney.
Avatar f tn Only Female Dogs experience Heat Cycles; Not Males.....What your describing is normal behavior in an Un-neutered male.....However, with the length of this (2 hrs.), I'd be concerned about a back injury (Common in Toy Breeds)......Take the toy away from him or stop it by having him Neutered.....
Avatar n tn Toy sizes are also prone to typical toy problems like hypoglycemia and of course frailness. One of the things that Minis can be plagued with is pancreatitis. I would think they would have found that with exploratory surgery though. Maybe he got hurt? Tiny dogs get hurt very easily and it could literally be anything. As far as his gallbladder goes, sometimes liver and/or heart problems are also present with an enlarged gallbladder, so you might want a liver enzyme test and a cardio test.
Avatar f tn The fact that this puppy is only four months old is baffling, because idiopathic epilepsy usually is first seen in dogs in the 2-3 year old range. While it is not unheard of for it to occur in young puppies, in their case it is more often due to a head injury or some type of illness, like hypoglycemia. Reno007, what breed(s) is this puppy? Is he a large breed mix? A toy mix? How many times a day are you feeding him?
506570 tn?1215836300 I lived in Alaska, two different regions, and the northern dogs there (malmute, husky, samoyed, and wolf hybrids) all howled in the morning whether they were working dogs (sled dogs) or pets. It is their nature to do so, an innate trait.Just like roosters who crow when the sun rises. No need to punish your dog or try to correct this behavior. Just think of it as the call of the wild.
298824 tn?1349955177 The dogs could be teething, if so, you can buy at grocery store, ginger root in the produce section, looks just like a root, make them bite it, its just like oragel we give babies when teething, it numbs the gums...
1500294 tn?1290272209 Hello & welcome.....Dental Disease is very prevalent in Toy breeds.....Something like 85% of dogs have some sort of peridontal disease by the age of 3. Brushing needs to be at least 4-5 times a week or you are defeating your purpose. Make sure you use a toothpaste formulated for dogs. Human toothpaste w/ Fluoride is toxic to dogs! Once you start brushing more often, the gums will become healthier & the bleeding will stop. This is common!
Avatar f tn t think he has any idea what he is missing in the companionship and play time with other dogs. We have gone to a group program where he is brought to a park with other dogs and after several outings, I was able to remove his leash to be loose with a few dogs that he had met several times previously, but I have to watch his body language because he thinks he reads some look on another dog and his demeanor changes immediately.
919332 tn?1243459693 My Aussie Cattle dog has become VERY aggressive only towards other dogs, it started when i was visiting my mother and he and the neighbors Boston terrier got into a fight, after that, my brothers dog walked into the house and bandit attacked him, he was 2 years old and i had him neutered shortly after, he still acts aggressive to any animals, except cats, but more so dogs, male dogs in general.
Avatar f tn Peanut butter is okay for dogs - in fact, it contains some excellent vitamins, fats and proteins. Like all things, we have to be a little careful - so it is best only to use a small amount (smeared inside the Kong) and choose a peanut butter without any salt or sugar (there are organic varieties that offer this). Obviously, if your dog has signs of allergies, it's best not to use peanut butter, because an allergic dog is likely to have allergies to peanuts as well.
Avatar n tn If sounds as if he has become frustrated and is not satisfied with the available hiding locations in the house. Can you train him to one toy box, that he knows is all his own. You must reward him for putting his bone in the toy box each night with a treat that he finds irresistible. Additionally, is this a bone that was sold sterilized? If not please discard it and replace it with a new bone once per week.
Avatar n tn i have to watch my dog,i bought him toy week later i seen this stuffing on the floor i picked it up check toy and behold hole were me dog had bitten,of course i have stopped him playing with anykind of toy which as stuffing in it..
Avatar f tn Seizures are very common in diabetic hypoglycemia, when the diabetes has gone completely out of control. It is just possible this could be a nervous system issue, but the first priority is to find out why the blood glucose level is high - and then work on a diagnosis from that point.
Avatar f tn Potatoes are ok for dogs too. But it might be best not to give him a food which is high in saturated fat. Go for good protein, like beef, chicken, venison, rabbit, sardines, tuna, and omega oils, and carbs. Because I live in England, we have different dog foods over here, so I can't recommend a food for you to try. But with a little research, maybe you could find a suitable food.
Avatar f tn I have Heard that smaller Dogs like her have a hard time carrying puppies from bigger Dogs and that it can kill them if the puppies are too large for her to carry. I'm really concerned because She has been showing all of the early signs of pregnancy. Even though the weiner dog isn't a big dog, he is bigger than her. HELP!
603946 tn?1333941839 s just an overgrowth of bacteria in the digestive system. In this case, a Probiotic is helpful, to counter-act the bad bacteria in the gut. Otherwise, a bloodtest is in order to look for organ problems. Hope some of this helps....Karla P.S. As of right now, 83% of dogs in the U.S. have some kind of dental disease by the age of 3 yrs. old. Most of these dogs are fed dry kibble. That will probably answer your question about food... If it's actually Dental Disease...Please address it, now.
389345 tn?1209322565 Just get as much of that yukky stuff out as you can without going in too far. We make ear cleaning a monthly routine around here with our dogs that have floppy ears. Dogs with perked up ears don't tend to get as much goop built up for some reason.
Avatar f tn m not converting my dogs to be outside dogs when most the time they will fall asleep in my room but leave and go sleep with my brother.
Avatar f tn Chewing is a basic need in young dogs, so the idea is to get them to chew on acceptable items instead of shoes and the landscaping. Anything from rawhide chews to a hard plastic toy with treats hidden inside will help keep her attention on the toy rather than everything else she can sink her teeth into. Even with another dog around to play with, boredom can set in and result in unwanted behavior. Is your mom able to take both dogs outside the home for walks?
Avatar f tn Agree with bnc and knufrio. Yiu took the dog in as part of the family. Give him a chance. Bring the baby's things from the hospital so he can get used to the smell. Always supervise him with the baby. I have two dogs (pom/yorkie, 4, and Chihuahua 1) and they are my babies too. It would break my heart to get rid of either or both of them.
4966610 tn?1362054308 Luxating Patellas are very common in Toy breed dogs...The severity is based on grades......I have a poodle (Adopted at the age of 3) that has both knees involved....When she was finally diagnosed (At the age of 5), they were both listed as a grade 2.....AT this grade, surgery is not recommended.....I started her on a good joint supplement at that time..... She just had her yearly & her knees are both still at a grade 2....I DO believe the joint supplement works! She just turned 11!!
1421715 tn?1289238738 Yes, terrible mouth odor can come from the stomach......Here's how to tell the difference: Get your dog a STUFFED toy to play with.....Play catch or tug of war or something that gets he/she to chew on the toy....Take the toy & smell of it....If the odor is there, then it's the teeth! Digestive issues can come from many things from food not agreeing, low quality food , acid reflux, to malabsorption issues where they are not digesting their food correctly....
