Common Questions and Answers about Hypoglycemia in the elderly

hypoglycemia

Avatar f tn Lactic acidosis is a side effect of Metformin in unusual cases and is serious. Metformin needs to be taken with food.
Avatar n tn This type of hypoglycemia does not lead to diabetes.
Avatar f tn He offered help me to sweep the floor/yard. Hanging and picking up the clothes. He also concentrated on the weather make sure he picked up the clothes before it rained. He'll miss if he slept all the day long! LOL. He liked sleep (usually longer hour than us). He said to me, when getting old all the bones shrink, so can feel the body aching. He said exercise is important. Even he was on the bed, he also moving his toes and fingers a lot.
Avatar m tn Dosage details (amount, frequency, time taken) and 1/2 time elimination (usually prolonged in the elderly) may explain somewhat the timing. Other factors could have to do with Hypoxia, the recent TIA, sleep apnea, nutritional/vitamin/mineral deficiencies (some could be attributed to low stomach acid caused by Zantac), hypoglycemia, hypothyroidism etc..
Avatar n tn Without insulin, these sugars build up in the bloodstream and the person becomes ill. In Hypoglycemia, the pancreas makes too MUCH insulin at times, and this overdose of insulin, if you will, causes the symptoms you describe. You will find that eating something that has some carbohydrates in it will make you feel better quicker than something that is low in carbohydrates when you feel this way. Many people exeperience this and there can be many causes.
Avatar n tn Go with lots and lots of fiber, at least the minimun daily requirement and this should help unless she is developing IBS. Try this and if it doesn't work have her see a GI dr.
Avatar n tn m not a medical professional, just the parent of a kid with diabetes. Have you had the hypoglycemia test or diabetes test actually done? The symptoms are there, if you haven't done those tests, I'd recommend you get them done right away to ease your concerns. The celiac test can be done as well, but many endocrinologists will recommend to test for diabetes or hypogylcemia first. Good luck.
Avatar n tn m not a medical professional, just the parent of a kid with diabetes. As a fasting blood glucose result, 80 is on the low end of the ok range, but it is in the ok range. If your daughter will develop diabetes, or just hypoglycemia, there is nothing known that you can do to prevent it. You can keep your family, daughter included, more healthy through exercise and a better diet with more fruits and grains, for example, but that won't stop hypoglycemia in your daughter.
Avatar m tn t go now his body will force him to go eventually and it may be too late. By nipping things in the bud we can prevent any serious problems in the future. You should also get him on probiotics either a supplement or yogurt enriched with it. We are more apt to develop polyps after the age of 50 and that's why they suggest we start having colonoscopies at age 50.
Avatar n tn In most healthy individuals, symptoms of hypoglycemia may not occur until the glucose level drops below 45 mg/dl. In elderly people, and in patients with chronically high glucose levels (such as patients with poorly controlled diabetes), the symptoms of hypoglycemia can occur at higher glucose levels. In contrast, patients with chronically low blood glucose may experience hypoglycemic symptoms only at very low glucose levels. WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF HYPOGLYCEMIA?
Avatar n tn Are the blood blisters in the arms and legs of some elderly a vitamin or mineral deficiency? If so, what will help? This discussion is related to blood blisters.
Avatar f tn Hi. 5'10" Gent, and brand spankin newbie to this site. i just turned 56 in April. In my journal August. 12, 2013, I recorded wgt. 247.5 lb, BP 157/101, severe depression & anxiety with heaart palpitations and mid-nightime panic attacks. Also using CPAP setting of 14cm for severe sleep apnea, and suffered almost daily migraines. Plus my triglicerides were, as my dr put it, "through the roof!
Avatar m tn It could be due to postural hypotension, where in upon standing blood pooling occurs in the legs and the brain is deprived of adequate blood supply and oxygenation. This is more common in the elderly and in people with diabetes mellitus. Please consult your GP who will examine you and may ask for blood tests for evaluating blood sugar and CBC. Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
161427 tn?1229911282 I would like to do a short experiment by taking my mother-in-law off Plavix for a few days while she is in her normal living conditions at the nursing home. However, I have not seen dementia listed in any materials related to Plavix, so no one caring for my mother-in-law takes this idea seriously. Does anyone have any experience with this situation? Could it be dangerous to take her off the Plavix for a few days? Are there any substitutes for Plavix that might work better?
Avatar f tn I ended up in the hospital. what is my blood sugar and only 50. which was very low.
Avatar n tn I would assume that it can cause vision changes because when sugar levels raise and fall in your body they do so in all of your cells - including the cells in your eyes. This is why diabetics should have a glocoma test annually to make sure none of the blood vessels in the eyes are being effected. Sorry I don't know more but please post what you find out here as well so I can learn too.
Avatar f tn Went for a normal physical with fasting labs. I got a call from my doctor two days later and my glucose was 56. They were concerned about me being possibly hypoglycemic. Been checking it on and off and reading a lot on the subject but no definite answer as to what I need to be watching for in the future. It ranges from being in the 60s to 120s. The highest I've ever saw it go is 122 but that was two hours after eating.

Avatar f tn From that point forward I have not had a fever, but have had the tightness in the chest in the sense that when I take a deep breath I can feel it like after a hard run, and I've had the accelerated heart rate. I may have had the accelerated heart rate previously, but didn't think about checking it. The thing is I know stress just adds to it. It is just really frustrating because I didn't know what to do about it except try to rest and relax.
Avatar n tn Yesterday I went to the bathroom (just to pee) and when I sat down, I felt my blood sugar dropping. Usually, by the tme I "feel" it, it's already in the 40's. I thought I'd be okay for as long as I would be there. That was NOT the case. I found myself ON THE FLOOR calling for my fiance' to help me. He brought crackers and peanut butter. I ate one square (which was not enough, of course) and he was litterally feeding me as I laid there unable to get up.
Avatar n tn Hi - I'm new here. I have pre-diabetes (about 2 years now) and have autoimmune degenerative neuropathy (CIDP for 26 years) unrelated to diabetes. I am not overweight, and am 32 years of age. My question is: does inflammation in the nervous system cause alterations in glucose metabolism? I'm currently having multiple daily bouts of hypoglycemia - my doctors can't/won't answer my question. I'm taking IVIG, Imuran and Ultram - no steroids or antidiabetics.
Avatar n tn I keep asking about diabetes but they keep saying she would be much sicker and blood draws were done while in the hospital for the gallbladder and not even a hint of it so I rested my case yesterday. In her case, we now think they are illness related as it happened in the hosp with the gallbladder pain, etc. and a week ago at school and yesterday was at the Dr for an ear/sinus infection which is dragging her down. Keep us posted. I'm glad you have an answer but no cure yet!
