Common Questions and Answers about Hypoglycemia in older diabetic patients

hypoglycemia

Avatar f tn It is a somewhat paradoxical situation because you can be diabetic and still have too much insulin in your body. Ordinarily, too much insulin would lead to a low (hypo), but with insulin resistence, the body cannot use the insulin that it has, and for various reasons the pancreas actually produces more insulin leading to an excess of insulin in the bloodstream.
Avatar m tn A long-term study of thousands of older patients with Type 2 diabetes in Northern California found that those who had experienced even one episode of hypoglycemia serious enough to send them to a hospital were at higher risk for developing dementia than diabetic patients who had not experienced such an episode. With each additional episode, the risk of developing dementia increased, the study found.
Avatar n tn When my blood sugar was checked it read 30, and the nurses all looked at me and asked if I was okay, and they told me that patients here go into diabetic coma. They told me to eat something, so had a box of girl scout cookes that I had enten then after about 30 minutes or so I rechecked it and it was I think around 80. This happend all the time and after telling my doctor they did a fasting blood sugar, but it all was okay.
Avatar m tn my question is why i feel weak and energyless even if i have controlled my diabetic
Avatar m tn If this injection is effective in bringing down blood sugar levels, why couldn't some type of use of this injection substance be useful in lowering blood sugar levels when they are running to high? This might be a stupid question, but I was just wondering. Thanks!
Avatar n tn What are her chances of becoming diabetic? Her doctor said hypoglycemia sometimes precedes diabetes in children. Is is possible to "grow out of" hypoglycemia? If so, what are the chances of this happening?
Avatar m tn This is an Diabetes Adult Type II forum and we are discussing hypoglycemia in diabetic patients. Yes, there are very rare instances where it occurs in non-diabetic people. This forum does not address non-diabetic people nor should one create confusion to forum diabetic readers.
Avatar f tn Take the time to Google and learn about Hypoglycemia and also LADA [Latent Autoimmune Disease in Adults] which is a type of Hypoglycemia and often misdiagnosed as Hyperglycemia. Good luck.
Avatar n tn Symptoms of hypoglycemia occur at different levels of blood glucose in different patients. In most healthy individuals, symptoms of hypoglycemia may not occur until the glucose level drops below 45 mg/dl. In elderly people, and in patients with chronically high glucose levels (such as patients with poorly controlled diabetes), the symptoms of hypoglycemia can occur at higher glucose levels.
Avatar n tn However, I briefly highlighted three common causes of tremors in patients such as your husband. Thank you for using the forum, I hope you find this information useful, good luck.
Avatar n tn You may suffer from hypoglycemia alone or you may be pre-diabetic or diabetic. Only your doctor can tell you for sure. It sounds like in the next week he is going to do either an A1C which tests for your average blood sugar in a 2-3 month period or an OGTT which means drinking a high sugar liquid and testing your response over a couple hours. At any rate his comment that severe hypoglycemic reactions are common in women your age is absolute nonsense!
Avatar n tn tell you what the diabetic forum has some good folks who will know the answer to this..
Avatar n tn BBs have increased risk for CV mortality when compared with RAS blockade therapy in diabetic patients with hypertension. BBs do not have increased risk for myocardial infarction, stroke, CV mortality, and total mortality when compared with control antihypertensive therapy in diabetic patients with hypertension." http://journals.lww.com/americantherapeutics/Abstract/2009/03000/Comparative_Analysis_of_Beta_Blockers_With_Other.6.
Avatar n tn That sounds like Reactive Hypoglycemia, which is a condition where people's blood sugar drops after eating a meal high in carbs. You could try eating less carbs and see if it improves or you could visit your doctor.
Avatar n tn In one study, of thirty-nine patients who had tumors in the pancreas, a condition causing profound hypoglycemia, eight were first diagnosed with epilepsy or neurosis! Detection and diagnosis of hypoglycemia can lead to treatment that can totally correct this condition. Even if the symptoms are vague and seemingly subjective (which makes most doctors want to shy away from this diagnosis), if you're the one experiencing them, they can destroy the quality of your life.
Avatar f tn It sounds like Reactive Hypoglycemia refers to people that have low blood sugar after eating, even if they eat sufficient carbs. It seems as though Reactive Hypoglycemia exists in some people entirely separate from any diagnosis of diabetes. (but they check to make sure as hypoglycemia is a symptom often experienced by diabetics).
649848 tn?1534633700 The last time it was measured blood glucose was 125, with insulin at 8.1. Blood glucose was considered to be in pre-diabetic range, while insulin level was considered to be normal. Now that I've had the GTT, my doctor says instead of pre-diabetes, I have Reactive Hypoglycemia...
Avatar f tn t understand the reason people get hypoglycemia. I read online is when diabetic people are taking their medications their sugar level go very low sometimes it can cause Hypoglycemia episodes. Is there any other reason why I would have hypoglycemia if I don't have diabetes? Also is there a high chance that hypoglycemia can turn to diabetes?
Avatar n tn Hello, I hope you'll find this information useful... If you would like to know more this subject you could join the diabetes Forum. http://www.medhelp.org/forums/Diabetes---Adult-Type-II/show/46 While there is some degree of variability among people, most will usually develop symptoms suggestive of hypoglycemia when blood glucose levels are lowered to the mid 60's.
Avatar f tn I asked my dr yesterday about getting shaky between meals if it had been a few hours since i had eaten anything and her response was that it sounded like hypoglycemia..she told me to stay away from sugar, sweets, fruit juices, cokes, etc. And to eat something high protein every 2 hours. Isnt this what they tell you when you are diabetic? And is there anything i can use for sweetener that will be ok?!
1770925 tn?1365618522 I have hypoglycemia for years and I don't eat sugary foods or fried foods. I eat small meals 6 times a day. Fruit and vegetables and soy products. Just fish etc. I am just saying that small meals often is the way to go with hypoglycemia. This eating regime helps my sugar stay level and not low, but if I stress the sugar drops and ginger helps me. I am not on any medication. See your Dr for advice.
Avatar n tn Hi, You did not say in your post if you had been evaluated by a physician or if you were ever diagnosed as a diabetic. For many people a blood glucose in the 80s except following a meal or other food/drink intake is normal.
Avatar n tn My aunt is hypoglycemic she always carries with her little ham sandwiches, peanut butter sandwiches. She watches her sugar intake, and seems to be doing well. It might help to see a nutritionist to get some info and help.
