Common Questions and Answers about Hypoglycemia in icu patients

hypoglycemia

Avatar f tn I would see your doctor about this very soon, as folks with hypoglycemia may develop diabetes later on. You may have pre-diabetes, and need to go on a diabetic diet. Meanwhile, make sure you have both protein and carbohydrates with all meals, and with all snacks, which you seem to be doing. You also might need to get a dietary consult and/or see an endocrinologist, for both are specially trained in working with people with blood sugar problems.

1903798 tn?1333905288 Hey friends I came through surgery well.
Avatar n tn This type of hypoglycemia does not lead to diabetes.
Avatar n tn Symptoms of hypoglycemia occur at different levels of blood glucose in different patients. In most healthy individuals, symptoms of hypoglycemia may not occur until the glucose level drops below 45 mg/dl. In elderly people, and in patients with chronically high glucose levels (such as patients with poorly controlled diabetes), the symptoms of hypoglycemia can occur at higher glucose levels.
Avatar n tn Sometimes, patients in the hospital, particularly older patients in an ICU, can develop what is called a delirium, an alteration in their level of alertness and awareness. Sometimes it can be associated with confusion and hallucinations. This will usually resolve once the patient is out of the ICU, though patients older than 65-70 sometimes have trouble recovering from this. Depending on where your mom's stroke is, there can be changes in her personality.
498656 tn?1213446919 She was on life support and seizures stopped for 35 hrs or so and I called her in the ICU and she had a seizure today while I was on with her. (She started crying after saying she wasn't doing good and then started seizures I guess. I have not been closed to her over the yrs due to her disease state and when my Dad died 4 yrs ago she came to his Memorial and we have been occasional phone friends since. ( I lived with her and her parents in senior yr of high school, so we were close.
1231791 tn?1289756226 I was not a high risk patient, and when she put me on Rythmol, I had a very severe and rare reaction, and spent the next couple of days in ICU. I would never be comfortable with starting a new heart med at home.
Avatar n tn My grandpa was already in ICU for a week,80 years old, double lung infection and some pulmonary fibrosis, assisted by Ventilator. Although other medical indicators get a little bit better, his doctor recommends doing a Tracheotomy. This is a very hard choice for families, and because China just released the Covid-19 restriction, we do not have any experience in treating Covid-19 patients, even the doctor does. I really need help to know whether the Tracheotomy is a good choice.
Avatar f tn I wasn't at NIH, but when *I* was in ICU, there was a computer, but only for the nurses. :-) It sounds like there are computers for you to use. Nice! Hopefully they are laptops because I don't see you getting out of bed to use the computer ;-) I had a TV in ICU, but I was SO SENSITIVE to any noise, that I couldn't stand it. I never turned it on until about an hour before they sent me to a regular room. Even then, it was very agitating.
1835973 tn?1318617713 I very recently found out I am hypoglycemic & I have had Rheumatoid arthritis since 1991. I've tried various pills, drugs & intravenous Rheumatoid arthritis drugs through the years all after a while have hardly any effect or relief.
Avatar f tn From everything I hear and know about Chiari somethings fishy. Get a second oppinion and don't go back to him. He doesn't sound like a specialist to me if he doesn't even have you in icu the first night respiratory problems or not. All chiari patients are in ICU the first night. The rest I'm not sure about. I usually annoy the nurses into giving me tigan or pheragen or even compazine when they don't have the above.
Avatar n tn Hello, I hope you'll find this information useful... If you would like to know more this subject you could join the diabetes Forum. http://www.medhelp.org/forums/Diabetes---Adult-Type-II/show/46 While there is some degree of variability among people, most will usually develop symptoms suggestive of hypoglycemia when blood glucose levels are lowered to the mid 60's.
Avatar m tn If this injection is effective in bringing down blood sugar levels, why couldn't some type of use of this injection substance be useful in lowering blood sugar levels when they are running to high? This might be a stupid question, but I was just wondering. Thanks!
Avatar f tn Lactic acidosis is a side effect of Metformin in unusual cases and is serious. Metformin needs to be taken with food.
Avatar f tn Notable prolongation of the prothrombin time was always present initially and antedated other abnormalities of hepatic function. Three of seven patients in this group survived. Hypoglycemia was seen in both groups and in two subjects with acute hepatic insufficiency, glucose administration alone resulted in rapid lowering of lactate levels.” https://jamanetwork.
Avatar m tn There is variance in recovery times. Some patients were back at work in five weeks others several months. Your current health status may put you in the several weeks category. For some insight, right after the surgery, you will be kept in ICU unit and closely monitored for around 24 hours to 48 hours. . If there are no complications, you will leave the ICU and be placed in a normal hospital room where you can recover.
Avatar f tn Many times this will depend on ur dr and u...how u do.....I was in ICU for 2 and a 1/2 days and then in the reg room for 3days..... May I ask who is doing ur surgery?.... I am glad to welcome u to our little family here, sorry the reason u had to seek us out.
905378 tn?1244854365 I can only speak for myself. I was not in ICU, but did spend almost a week in the hospital. I was given pain meds and I had a morphine pump (which lets your Mom push the button whenever the pain is too bad .. but it is timed not to allow her to do that too often.) I used the pump occasionally the first few days and was in good spirits. I was not allowed solid food until I moved my bowels .. which was a bit of a problem as the pain meds tend to constipate you. I was only allowed soft food ..
Avatar f tn As a former nurse, I found that when treating the elderly, they would easily become confused after a period of time in the hospital, especially if they were in the ICU where there is plenty of noise and lack of sleep. This is hard on a young person, the elderly seem to be more sensitive to this...at least that is what I have observed.
Avatar f tn I know before 34 weeks something like that they keep babys in icu .im 32 weeks 2days due in jan 6th but I have a feeling this baby will come in another few weeks I'm uncomforable, I'm dilated and have back pains unless I'm up doing stuff.
Avatar f tn Take the time to Google and learn about Hypoglycemia and also LADA [Latent Autoimmune Disease in Adults] which is a type of Hypoglycemia and often misdiagnosed as Hyperglycemia. Good luck.
Avatar n tn Hello. I'm not a medical professional, just the parent of a kid with diabetes. As a fasting blood glucose result, 80 is on the low end of the ok range, but it is in the ok range. If your daughter will develop diabetes, or just hypoglycemia, there is nothing known that you can do to prevent it. You can keep your family, daughter included, more healthy through exercise and a better diet with more fruits and grains, for example, but that won't stop hypoglycemia in your daughter.
Avatar n tn If so, have you had further testing for diabetes? Or if you know you have diabetes, I saw a website that said in well controlled diabetes patients, A1C is 7 or less. Have you talked to the doctor about getting a better handle on your diabetes? Or if you mean your actual blood sugar- that is extremely low- are you getting treated for hypoglycemia?
Avatar f tn Since he came out of surgery he has been put in induced coma and on a ventilator his oxygen level is low and his lung is operating at a 23% capacity.. doctors think that he might developed infection and are giving him antibiotics for the past 3 days. My question is will his lung be able to improve and start working at a higher capacity?
