Avatar n tn Malaria infection in pregnant women can be more severe than in nonpregnant women. Malaria can increase the risk for adverse pregnancy outcomes, including prematurity, spontaneous abortion, and stillbirth. For these reasons, and because no chemoprophylactic regimen is completely effective, women who are pregnant or likely to become pregnant should be advised to avoid travel to areas with malaria transmission if possible (see Chapter 8, Pregnant Travelers).

Avatar n tn Well, hey! Good to hear from you. My LLMD treated the babesiosis first, and the mepron/zith did the trick. I was way better just getting rid of the babs. I haven't heard or read much of anything about lariam (aka Mefloquine) ... but I just looked it up on wikipedia (however trustworthy that is or isn't), and found some interesting stuff: "Mefloquine is used to prevent malaria (malaria prophylaxis) and also in the treatment of chloroquine-resistant falciparum malaria. ...
Avatar n tn I ask this because it is quite common in Ghana, Tanzania (and other places where malaria is endemic) for the diagnosis of malaria to be mistakenly made with febrile illnesses. Just some more thoughts. There are also other possibilities based on your travel history and the length of your stay. ~*~ Dr. Parks This answer is not intended as and does not substitute for medical advice. Avatar n tn Chills can be due to low blood sugar or hypoglycemia or due to low vitamin B12. It can also be malaria which is often difficult to catch by diagnostic tests. UTI is another common cause, and can present without fever and increase frequency. Pneumonia and ear infections are probably ruled out as you have no related symptoms that you report. General weakness as in anemia can be another cause. A comprehensive investigation is required keeping all these points in mind.
Avatar n tn This type of hypoglycemia does not lead to diabetes.
Avatar m tn I have been getting chills with no fever, pain on the left side of my stomach by my ribs and through my back, randomly nauseous but no vomiting or change in bowel movements, and weight loss. I have seen my doctor. I have had blood work done and everything is normal, I also had an ultrasound of the gallbladder and everything was normal, I also had a HIDA scan of the gallbladder and everything was normal. This has been going on for 2 months now.
Avatar f tn t agree with you in NY or some activity you did in NY? Maybe an exposure to someone who was sick (in NY, on the plane, etc.)? As everyone else has stated, go to the doctor.
Avatar n tn Hello, One of the rules of travel and tropical medicine is that a fever in non-native person (not taking malaria prophylaxis) in an area with endemic malaria is malaria until proven otherwise. In general, symptoms of high fever, neck stiffness, and headache are features of meningitis. And, if confusion (or mental status changes) is present, then we get concerned about encephalitis. That being said, there are many, many causes of fever and body aches (medical name is myalgias).
Avatar f tn And also do you live in a malaria endemic country ? If yes then i suggest you get an antimalaria drug. It could also be sign of another infection asides malaria.
Avatar m tn s guidelines on malaria are very strict if they suspect malaria). Avatar n tn In some patients, symptoms of hypoglycemia occur during fasting (fasting hypoglycemia). In others, symptoms of hypoglycemia occur after meals (reactive hypoglycemia). Drug-induced hypoglycemia is seen with the inadvertent or intentional overdose of insulin or oral medications used to lower blood glucose. Blood glucose-lowering pills and insulin are medications used to lower the abnormally high blood glucose levels in patients with diabetes mellitus.
Avatar m tn Pam, Ewford's right, babesia is in the same family as malaria -- it's a protozoal infection, not bacterial like Lyme. It needs completely different meds from Lyme. Malaria is widespread in tropical areas of the world, tho DDT (insecticide spraying) did wonders at reducing the mosquito population decades ago, and it's mosquitos that often carry malaria, just as ticks often carry Lyme.
Avatar m tn Hi I am a 26 year old male. I have had the above symptoms for a few weeks now. The blood in the urine is most frequent and usually very red. The blood in the stool hasn't happened for a while, but when it did there was a lot. I thought maybe it was a hemaroid or something, but then the blood in the urine came. Also, I have been getting a bit more tired (although I just started grad school so it could be that). I was a peace corps volunteer for 2 1/2 years and had malaria, was treated.
Avatar f tn Then I came out in a rash, so I went to the doctors. They tested for malaria, West Nile fever and dengue fever. I'm still waiting for the results. I started to feel a bit better and the bites had all bar cleared up (it's been about 3 weeks), but yesterday the two worst bite sites started itching again and have gone red and have a lump like another bite in the middle. Could anyone help me with this?
231048 tn?1214354453 Quinine was the first effective treatment for malaria caused by P. falciparum, appearing in therapeutics in the 17th century. It remained the antimalarial drug of choice until the 1940s, when other drugs took over. Since then, many effective antimalarials have been introduced, although quinine is still used to treat the disease in certain critical situations. Quinine is available with a prescription in the United States.
Avatar m tn I have had fever for the past three days. I feel fine during the day time but it gets terrible during the night. I am worried I am suffering from malaria. How do I find out?
Avatar f tn Hi and sorry you are ill. Are you in the U.S. now or what country do you reside in? So you don't know if they did a smear for malaria or what. I think you should try to get a PCR test for malaria. Maybe if you can see an infectious disease specialist that would be best. Have you been swimming, wading or washing in fresh water? If not that is good. You should also get a stool sample done a few times for parasites. You could have several things at once.
7020911 tn?1387293423 I am a community health worker so I used to be in a possession of hiv and malaria test kits before Government withdrew from sponsoring us but in these particular tests I ran out of chase buffer so I decided to use assay buffer for malaria test
Avatar n tn Hello. I'm not a medical professional, just the parent of a kid with diabetes. As a fasting blood glucose result, 80 is on the low end of the ok range, but it is in the ok range. If your daughter will develop diabetes, or just hypoglycemia, there is nothing known that you can do to prevent it. You can keep your family, daughter included, more healthy through exercise and a better diet with more fruits and grains, for example, but that won't stop hypoglycemia in your daughter.
