Hypoglycemia glucose meter

Common Questions and Answers about Hypoglycemia glucose meter

hypoglycemia

2088051 tn?1334542007 Yes, as sally mentioned, by all means get a home glucose test meter and test, test, test to learn when your glucose drops below normal levels. Carbs are your worst enemy. After a high carbohydrate meal your blood sugar increases which forces your pancreas to produce more insulin. This in turn may cause a hypoglycemic episode. It's probably in your best interest to carry glucose tablets and/or hard candy to combat the lows. G-tablets can be purchased at most drug stores OTC.
Avatar n tn However, the symptoms you write to us would lead me to advise you to make an appointment with his doctor just to make sure that he has not had some small stroke or something like that, and even more important, to have the doctor send you to a lab so you can compare the results of his glucose meter with one in the lab or with lab results. It is possible that his meter is not accurate right now for some reason, and it may need to be either calibrated or replaced. One more suggestion...
Avatar m tn It's good to see that you are trying to manage your glucose levels b4 they get out of control. An OGTT requires you to be sedentary 2 hours post test. Being active 1 hour post defeated your "homemade" test. See this link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glucose_tolerance_test Q: "What can be the normal glucose level after 3-4 hours lunch or dinner time" A: Glucose peaks 2-3 hours after meals where the normal value is <180 mg/dl and the optimum is <140 mg/dl.
Avatar f tn For some people, Metformin can cause glucose [blood sugar] levels to drop too low [hypoglycemia]. This often times happens when Metformin is combined with other diabetes medications, and is more common in elderly folks or folks with internal organ issues. Low glucose also can happen when fasting before surgery or a blood test/s and after lengthy exercise. You should notify your doctor of your low glucose experiences ASAP. Ask your doctor how to adjust your Metformin dose if needed.
Avatar n tn Your symptoms sound as if you are maybe getting low blood sugars. Does your mother have a glucose meter? Maybe try testing your blood on it-just to give you piece of mind.
Avatar m tn One of my parents and a good friend have hypoglycemia. They just needs to eat frequently. Both can feel when their glucose level drops. They become lightheaded, sometimes nauseated and dizzy. Neither have had any major problems associated with the hypoglycemia. Diabetes on the other hand can be extremely dangerous if you are taking insulin and your glucose levels drop to 40. That may have been the concern you picked up in my post.
Avatar n tn Have fast acting glucose available as well, and test how she responds to that glucose. The best type of fast acting glucose are glucose tablets, you can get them at Walgreens stores, as well as most pharmacies. Good luck.
Avatar f tn These are vague symptoms for hypoglycemia. I would see an Endocrinologist and have some bloodwork done.
Avatar n tn It is aweful when those levels fall....i went out and bought a glucose meter and started testing myself when i had those symptoms and starting charting. Low and behold i was dropping into the 50's and 60's. I started eating something every 2 hrs and modified what i was consuming to help me through these lows. You won;t know unless you get meter and start testing yourself throughout your days.
Avatar f tn You suggested I keep track of his fasting and two hour after meal blood sugars. However our meter broke right before I was going to start doing that. I am wondering if there is a certain type of meter that ped endos like in particular because I'm probably going to have to go buy another one. Any info you could provide would be great.
Avatar f tn Thank you for your help. I tried eating a low carb, low sugar diet with more protein, and within a few days I started getting lightheaded and my arms and legs felt kind of numb. It was kind of scary. As soon as I started eating sugar and more carbs, I started feeling better. Also, another thing to consider is I work out a lot (and I'm pretty skinny), so I probably need more carbs than the average person.
Avatar f tn She just printed out pages of different types of diets and glucose meter and sent me on my way. We used the meter until we ran out of the test strips and I never had an episode. That was 1-2 years ago, as I said before. I've had episodes since then, but can't test my levels because we can't afford to buy the strips anymore since insurance doesn't cover things that aren't medically required. I feel lost and hopeless.
Avatar f tn Some people experience Reactive Hypoglycemia, or postprandial hypoglycemia, where their glucose levels dip below normal usually within 4 hours after eating. Your symptoms mimic this.
Avatar f tn I'm 29 years old and have a family history of diabetes. I had an HbA1c test done sometime ago which was normal but I have been getting symptoms of low blood sugar which resolve within 5-10 minutes after eating glucose tablets and I don't know why. I am also hypothyroid. Could anyone please advise? Symptoms when haven't eaten: feeling sick, tired, weak, shaky, headache, drowsy, irritable.
Avatar m tn I suffer from hypoglycemia, and from my experience the first way to detect it is through getting a meter from the doctor. When I went to the doctor about my symptoms, she gave me a meter for free, and a few strips (the strips are where they get you) I took my blood sugar when I wasn't feeling well and it was very low, confirming the diagnosis. At this point there isn't much medically that can be done.
3923358 tn?1358552214 I woke up and ate a hard boiled and 1/3 cup of apple sauce. I bought a meter because i like keeping track and my doctor reccomends it due to type 1 running in the family. About 1/2 after i ate I started to feel sort of out of it and so I tested it and my blood sugar was 69, is that low. Also yesterday my fasting glucose was 131. Should I be concerned?
Avatar m tn s knowledge and permission. You can endanger yourself with a possible hypoglycemia episode. It might be time to see your doctor again as your medication regimen may be in need of adjustment.
Avatar n tn It started out with him getting very pale, shaky, and he would start vomitting. I bought a glucose meter to keep at home so I could check his sugar when the symptoms started to appear. He has had readings down to 40mg/dl. I can give him a coke or something sweet and within 15min. he will start to feel better and the symptoms will go away. He was hospitalized a year ago for vomitting and dehydration and he had a glucose reading of 43mg/dl.
Avatar n tn okay here's the verdict: i'v got full blown diabetes. I had another seizure (again in my sleep) and got taken to A and E. my blood glucose was down to 1.6, so i guess it's not surprising i had a seizure. I've just spent the day in hospital, and got to come home this evening when i was up to a healthy 7. I have no idea how to live with diabetes.
514704 tn?1228312637 i won't be tested for diabetes until wed 10. i bought a meter...to keep tabs... it seems to go up 254.... and at bed time it is 133... on some mornings.... its low and i have the hypoglacemia symptom... and when i have sugar to bring it up... it skyrockets.; I have noticed when its high... i get a bad headache... i sweat more at nite when im in bed and i have nightmares.... ...
Avatar n tn t exactly sounding like hypoglycemia, but it could be (low blood sugar) and a simple meter test will tell you. Or else he is drinking when you are at work and using diabetes as an excuse.
Avatar m tn I want to know if this an appropriate treatment, and when i can expect my glucose to return to normal. Also they said my vitamin D levels were extremely low, is that caused by the diabetes? Also, i'm bewildered by this. But they said after my high a1c test, i got blood drawn 10 minuters later, and they said the results of that blood test is that my glucose levels were low 10 minutes later. Can anyone explain this?
Avatar f tn When you say "I take my 15mcg cytomel 2 in AM and 1 Mid Afternoon", I assume you mean 2 - 5 mcg tablets in the morning and 1 5 mcg tablet Mid-afternoon, is that correct? Have you tried splitting the pills evenly so you're getting 7.5 mcg at each dose? Or take your afternoon dose closer to noon instead of midafternoon?
20853006 tn?1547666489 It would be ideal that they check your hba1c (3 month average blood sugars), and perhaps consider doing a glucose tolerance test, ideally testing both glucose and insulin levels. In the meantime, management should be regular meals (avoid going too long without eating) that provide plenty of protein and healthy fats (to help hold blood sugar levels stable) along with some complex carbs.
