Common Questions and Answers about Hypoglycemia diet glycemic index

hypoglycemia

Avatar n tn The pediatrician gave us the result of ketonic hypoglycemia. Is there a special diet i need to put him on? How often would he have episodes? And could he have had a one time only episode?
Avatar m tn From what I have read, it appears that when deciding which foods are best to eat, Glycemic Load is even more important that Glycemic Index. With that in mind, I am having some trouble making decisions pertaining to the all-important Rice, Potato, and Bread categories. My doc says stay away from white, and that brown is much better, i.e. whole grain bread is preferable to white bread, and brown rice is preferable to white rice.
Avatar n tn If she feels bad after she runs despite the diet with low glycemic index foods, you may want to keep some Gatorade handy for her to sip immediately after a run. Or even give her a cup somewhere in the middle of the run if she is allowed to drink something. Gatorade is absorbed by the body quicker than orange juice and while I wouldn't think she should drink lots of this very high-glycemic drink, it may be exactly what she needs to recover after very strenuous exercise.
687527 tn?1227108766 Less carbs more protein. I don't think the all Atkins diet is healthy for but for someone with sugar issues you may want to eat foods that are low on the glycemic index. Don't cut carbs entirely as that isn't a good idea, just try to replace some carbs with proteins. Look up the glycemic index in the internet and try eating more of the foods that are low on that chart. Sweet potatoes are a carb but are actually low on the glycemic index so are actually really good for you.
Avatar n tn I was wondering how you managed your diabetes and how strict you are with your diet, like do you only eat set meals throughout the day and stay away from foods with a high glycemic index? If you do eat foods with a high GI, like a banana, do you wait a while after taking your insulin to give it a headstart?
Avatar n tn I would suggest that you look very carefully at his diet, avoiding all high-glycemic index foods and caffeine. Keep some small juice boxes or cans handy wherever you are, and if he complains of headache, fatigue, or if he seems cold for no reason, you may want to offer some juice to bring sugar levels up. If I were you, I would ask to be referred to a juvenile diabetes specialist, who can tell you first-hand that seizures can be caused by severe hypoglycemia.
Avatar f tn I have lost 3 clothing sizes in about 12 weeks and I DO feel significantly better but I find that there is a LOT of variation on different glycemic index lists and it makes it difficult to tell whether I am making the right choices regarding my diet. Is there a list that is trusted?
Avatar f tn If you're getting episodes within a short period of when you eat, you could have what's called "reactive hypoglycemia". This means that when you eat certain foods, your blood glucose spikes, then suddenly the bottom drops out and it's too low (hypoglycemia). If you aren't careful, it ends up being a vicious circle, because the glucose drops you eat something to raise it, but many people raise it too quickly again, which again causes it to plummet - and so it goes...
Avatar n tn I have relatives and friends who are reactive hypoglycemics -- the worst has to avoid caffeine as well as high-glycemic index foods.
Avatar f tn Post exercise hypoglycemia can be prevented eating carbohydrates low on the glycemic index before your workout can keep your blood sugar to be stable. Avoiding over-training can also prevent post exercise hypoglycemia. Schedule rest days throughout the week and take breaks during a workout to give your body's fuel stores time to recover. Are you drinking enough water before, during and after exercising? Also are you wearing proper attire when working out.
3224201 tn?1380377795 Hi, I had problems getting pregnant, as well. I went on birth control pills when I was 16, because of menstrual pain and acne. I went off of it at age 20 to try and get pregnant. We tried for a year and then we stopped trying for 2 years and started trying again for the next 12 years until I was almost 35. I never got a single period on my own for this period of time. I had testing done when I was around 24 by a fertility doctor and was diagnosed with PCOS. I am an Ultrasound Technologist.
Avatar f tn Glycemic index diet is a general term for weight-loss diets that are based on your blood sugar level. Many popular commercial diets, diet books and diet websites revolve around the glycemic index, including Nutrisystem, the Zone diet and Sugar Busters.
Avatar f tn My daughter is on a modified ketogenic diet called Low Glycemic Index Treatment, it is not as strict as keto and allows for more carbs and protein. LGIT is different than the low glycemic diet you hear about for wt loss. In general Low Glycemic foods help to keep blood sugar even and helps to prevent those highs and lows. The treatment for epilepsy is like keto in that it is low carb and limits carbs, but of the carbs allowed, they must be low glycemic and again ...
20931051 tn?1694244079 Low Glycemic Index: Kiwi has a low glycemic index (GI), which means it has a relatively mild impact on blood sugar levels when compared to high-GI foods like white bread or sugary snacks. Fiber Content: Kiwi is rich in dietary fiber, which can help regulate blood sugar levels by slowing down the absorption of carbohydrates. Fiber also promotes a feeling of fullness, potentially reducing overeating.
Avatar n tn Typically, the best diet for PCOS is the same one used for diabetics. That would be foods that are high in fiber, protein and fat, but low on the glycemic index - meaning they don't spike the blood sugar levels. This means you would best eliminate things like white bread, pasta and rice and replace them with the whole grain versions and brown rice. Center your meals round veggies, healthful fats, lean protein, nuts, seeds, dairy, eggs, etc.
Avatar n tn Hello~ 33 yr old female w/ PCOS & was diagnosed w/type 2 6 yrs ago. I was not happy & revised my eating habits along w/ taking 500 mg of glucophage 2x daily. Avatar n tn Possible diet modifications include replacing simple carbohydrates (eg, soda, candy, white bread, white rice) with foods having a lower glycemic index, and limiting consumption of carbohydrates overall. The glycemic index is a measure of how much a food affects blood sugar levels. Type 2 diabetes generally results from insulin resistance (may be genetically and environmentally influenced) and the inability of the body to produce enough insulin to regulate blood sugar.

20620809 tn?1504362969 com/daily/nutrition/glycemic-index-chart/ The food is listed, along with the serving size in parenthesis, then the glycemic value. The lower the glycemic value, the better. There are a lot of other lists available on the internet - just do a search for "low glycemic foods". Most vegetables "qualify" as low glycemic, except things like white potatoes, etc.
Avatar n tn As for your sugars not rising after you eat a meal, this could be because your meal was low in high-glycemic index foods and so your body did not have to produce much insulin to maintain its normal glucose level or it could just mean that on that day your pancreas was a little hyperactive. Do you drink coffee? For some people, the caffeine can cause them to overproduce insulin and become hypoglycemic.
Avatar f tn I need to start eating more low glycemic index foods. Anyone know of good cookbooks?
Avatar m tn (not unlike southbeach) For instance, WaveRider mentioned fruits. Different fruits have different glycemic loads. For instance, apples have glycemic index of ~35-40, which is low. This is because they also have fiber, which slows absorption. Foods below 55 on the index are considered to have a low index and won't spike your sugar levels as much as higher indexed foods. Shy away from starchy veggies like potatoes and peas. Eat stuff like broccoli instead. Give yourself variety too.
1756367 tn?1400884364 There are the Paleo diets (Caveman diets) that emphasize primarily proteins, fats and vegetables. There is the Glycemic index diet that does not limit carb content but does recommend complex carbs over simple carbs. There are the higher fat diets, that recommend low carb, moderate protein and high fats. All of these would benefit a food addict. I would recommend that you find the one which suits you the most. Here are some links, amongst many available: GI Index: http://www.gidiet.
