Hypoglycemia blood alcohol levels

Common Questions and Answers about Hypoglycemia blood alcohol levels

hypoglycemia

Avatar n tn Dear melgonzales64, i am a diabetic like you and not a doctor or medical professional. Alcohal has many different effects on diabetics which is why the American Diabetes Association recomends diabetics only drink two drinks a day. If you take insulin for the alcohol it will just lower your blood sugar since alcohol doesn't need insulin for it to be digested.
Avatar f tn ve been doing research online, and came across an article that stated there is something about low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia) that triggers something in your brain that causes you to crave alcohol. I've always worried about developing diabetes from excessive drinking. Then I remembered that my sister is hypoglycemic. She's not an alcoholic like I am, but I do know that diabetes/hypoglycemia and alcoholism are all hereditary.
Avatar n tn I have been successful in being able to maintain decent control (65-160)while drinking heavily. Alcohol (beer) will raise levels consistent with any grain carbs and will not lower levels significantly with minimal levels of insulin in your system. I find that on a full or empty stomach, a small shot of quick acting insulin (4-5 units) for 6 or 7 beers will be perfect.
Avatar n tn I have had a problem with binge drinking for about 6 years, and my long binges would send me into terrible episodes of hypoglycemia. But I have since slowed my drinking down substantially, yet any amount of alcohol now seems to give me blood sugar issues, in different extremes. Could my binge drinking have made my liver more sensitive, to the point where I'll most likely have to abstain completely from alcohol?
Avatar n tn Most doctors therefore suggest that all diabetics drink only small amounts of alcohol. Hypoglycemia can kill within hours if nobody finds the person, or if the person is just assumed to be drunk and nobody takes his or her inability to function seriously. 2. Cane sugar IS 'normal' sugar. You need to know what the carb content is in any food or drink, not just how much sugar and what kind of sugar is in it.
Avatar n tn This is because alcohol consumption causes the body to lose its ability to release emergency sugars stored in the liver to protect you some from hypoglycemia when glucose levels begin to drop. Alcohol use also will diminish your awareness of the symptoms of hypoglycemia so you may not know your glucose levels are dropping.
Avatar n tn Or if these drugs affect the endocrine system, for if your adrenalin levels have been lowered by these drugs, hypoglycemia could be an result (adrenalin tends to raise glucose levels, so lowering adrenalin and cortisol could cause glucose levels to drop). The endocrine system is amazingly complex, so affects on the body can be surprising at times.
784382 tn?1376931040 Hi Welcome to the MedHelp forum! Blood circulation is ideally checked by a vascular specialist by sending you for either angiograms or duplex ultrasounds. There are many causes of dizziness, lightheadedness, passing out, blackouts etc. It is difficult to comment without examination. I am just enumerating the possible causes. You can discuss this with your doctor and get yourself examined.
1034736 tn?1319559035 Many who suffer from hypoglycemia have polycystic disease of the ovary associated with insulin resistance. Increased insulin levels can cause hypoglycemia. Excessive alcohol intake, hepatitis, kidney disease, certain medications, disorders of adrenal gland etc can all cause hypoglycemia. It can also be caused by poor eating patterns. Rarely is it caused by insulin secreting tumors called insulinomas.
Avatar f tn Thanks for your help! I appreciate your feedback! I was wondering about the reactive hypoglycemia and if that's what it could be. This lower blood sugar after eating didn't start until my blood sugars were under the normal limits all throughout the day. I realize it wasn't that low but it was lower than what I was used to. Also, I was wondering if you might know about normal insulin levels? She checked my insulin level and it was 6, she said 0-25 was normal???
Avatar f tn Hypoglycemia/ low blood sugar would be considered blood sugar levels less than about 70. Your result of 103 is normal, not hypoglycemia. It is likely that your symptoms may be from other causes. Sometimes headaches can be a sign of not drinking enough - so a glass of water and a few minutes to relax / be quiet - may help a lot. Hope this helps.
Avatar n tn Today about 20 minutes after my lunch I started sweating, feeling weak, heart racing, etc. I checked my blood sugar and it was 71 after eating a chicken salad, salad. I checked it before eating and it was 77 so why would it go down after eating a salad and a few wheat crackers? 71 is normal but again I felt horrible, weak, shaky, anxiety, etc. Could this be something other than Hypoglycemia? Before I had lunch I ran 2.5 miles on the treatmill and felt fine so this is beginning to puzzle me.
Avatar n tn The symptoms you have are similar to hypoglycemia, but your blood sugars are in the perfectly normal range. There is a simple check your doctor can do to test you for hypoglycemia. To ease your concerns, I'd recommend making an appointment and getting checked. Good luck.
Avatar n tn I have found this really hard to cope with, as my blood sugar levels have seemed to fluctuate widely for no apparent reason (as does my weight). I have also felt as though I have been on a physiological "rollercoaster"..having frequent highs and lows....I am trying my best to eat the right foods, exercise, avoid alcohol, but nothing seems to work. Please tell me that it gets easier?!!
Avatar n tn In people without diabetes, hypoglycemia can result from the body producing too much insulin after a meal, causing blood sugar levels to drop. This is called reactive hypoglycemia. Reactive hypoglycemia can be an early sign of diabetes. https://www.diabetes.
Avatar n tn lately my blood sugar levels have been dropping low then spiking after i eat, which is making me vomit, is this hypoglycemia, or something different?
Avatar n tn t exactly sounding like hypoglycemia, but it could be (low blood sugar) and a simple meter test will tell you. Or else he is drinking when you are at work and using diabetes as an excuse.
Avatar n tn A year ago I had normal blood sugar levels. Recently I have been suffering from anxiety attacks and light headedness. Done a fasting blood sugar test and it seems I have high blood sugar levels. Than this be the result of my anxiety attacks This discussion is related to Mysteriously high fasting blood glucose.
Avatar n tn re low -- The liver will cause glycogen stores to be converted to glucose in an attempt to raise our blood sugar. When we have alcohol in our systems, however, our liver will first deal with that "toxin" ... since the liver "sees" alochol as a poison to get processed out. As long as our liver is processing alcohol, it will NOT dump the glucose we might need -- no matter how low we go. That's the big added risk to drinking.
Avatar n tn I would recommend having your blood sugar and blood pressure checked. I would not recommend drinking alcohol if that is possible. What's your diet like?
Avatar m tn Hello~From your description, I would say you are having either small anxiety attacks or low blood sugar readings. Have you had your sugar levels tested recently? Hypoglycemia can give you the same symptoms you are describing. I would try avoiding all refined sugars, carbs and alcohol, eat 6 small protein meals a day, and take a good vitamin/mineral supplements that has dosages of "B" vitamins and chromium.
